The Kingdom of Matthias book is very interesting. It provides an appealing drama but also a satirical sensibility of historical events that happened throughout history. Such as cultural, economic, religion, and social change. The Colonial Age, an era of America settlement and the starting foundation of this country, shaped what we know as America now. The Colonial Era is where the enlightenment of economic control emerged, cultural and social diversity, and the formation of strict religion. Many nations came to America to establish wealth, and some came to flee from religious persecution. The first known colony established was Jamestown, also referred to as the New World. Here many events took place that set the foundation. Farming was essential …show more content…
during this time because it provided food to the Englishmen.
The Indian chief Powhatan provided the Englishmen with corn in exchange for resources such as guns, copper, and many other important resources he could use. Which eventually led to the discovery of the cash crop- tobacco, another source that promoted economic gain. As well as slavery. In The Kingdom of Matthias, the authors elaborated on issues that took place during the Jackson Era. The Jackson Era was a time of religious reform, and market revolution. Throughout the book, the authors used characters that relatively represented how the Jackson era contributed to some of the events that took place in the characters life experiences. Elijah Pierson, one of the main characters, was a religious reformer. Growing up Elijah became actively involved in religion at a young age due to his family’s religious involvements. He comes from a puritanism family background. During Elijah’s youth years, he faithfully went to church with his parents and siblings and followed the rules that God demanded. His youth years took place during the late 1700s, which was during the …show more content…
time of the American Revolution and the birth of a new nation. In the book, it mentions how Elijah’s father worked in a farm that he inherited from his great grandfather to make ends meet for his family. His father also played an important role in the church. This example represents the social roles men held during this time, and it shows economically what it was like during the American Revolution and before the birth of a new nation. It also mentions in the book how Elijah attended church and how he recognized the social ranks held within the church. “Sitting in church while Richards preached his Sunday lessons, Elijah could scan the room and see what the minister meant by God’s social ranks. The Piersons always sat in the same place, with their father their head, in the pew for which he paid rent. In front of him, near the minister’s family and the old folks who were hard of hearing, Elijah saw richer families that rented the more expensive pews near the pulpit. Behind Elijah sat families that paid less than his. In the back of the church and up in the gallery sat poor people, who paid nothing at all.”(pg.16) later Elijah would find the ranks to be injustice and disowned that kind of religious practice. This example represents the social classes of the 1700s. Elijah Pierson left Manhattan in the early nineteenth century. Which was a time where young boys, who would not inherit farms, searched for a new start and independently gain wealth. “During the early nineteenth century thousands of country boys (particularly younger sons, who would not inherit farms) made a trek for new England and the rural middle states, hoping to earn their fortunes in the nation’s fastest growing seaport (18)”. This example represents the national expansion and reform of the nineteenth century. At the age of thirty-four, Elijah and his partner John Steinbrenner opened their own mercantile in New York, which turned out to be a great investment at the time. In New York Elijah, realized things were different from Manhattan. Socially to him, things were demented. Because of the social disorder, Elijah stayed to his self and did not pursue after any form of romantic relationship. Because of this unpleasant situation, he begin to look to his religion for guidance. Throughout the book, Elijah’s church home and faith changed overtime. Influenced by his wife Sara’s faith, He went from a Presbyterian Church member to an evangelicalism faith, and became a south Baptist church member. Elijah faith changed throughout the book due to the death of his wife, which caused him to become deranged. These events led up to Elijah meeting Robert Matthews also known as Matthias.
Robert Matthews was a prophet. In the beginning of the story, Robert was a person who had a strong faith. He was a family man and had plenty of friends. He seemed to have a successful life. It was not until after the War of 1812 that Robert begin facing difficulties in his life. After the war of 1812, the new market was booming but Robert did not use his resources wisely, and experienced bankruptcy. This caused him to lose friends and associates that once trusted him. It seems after that Robert and his family faced many challenges and grief. He lost his two-year-old son Robert, and two years later, his second son died. Then there was a time years later where his entire family caught small pox and his youngest boy, who was a year old, died as well. During the loss of his first two children, the market revolution had begun. Which gives a micro perspective of what it was like for families and the economy during a drastic change. “While he convalesced, a financial panic devastated the city’s economy and suspended building projects throughout Manhattan (62) “. “Like thousands of other American men, he had experienced the market revolution not as liberating triumph but as a fitful, agonizing descent into wage labor. Never again would he regain his economic independence (62)”. These tragedies led Matthew to become angry and confused with religion. He being to become a mad man. He became abusive to his
wife and kids and eventually he would abandon his family. Through religion, Robert Matthews searched for guidance but it seems he grew further and further away from actually getting the guidance that he was seeking. In addition, eventually Robert Matthews would become Matthias. Matthias replaced the old Robert Matthews. Matthias faith led him to act as if he was God. “He was not, he now knew, Robert Matthews at all. He was Matthias, prophet of the God of the Jews. He had come, like John Ludlow, to bind up the broken-hearted, and to gather the faithful on the heights of Zion (84)”. Matthias traveled many places, which led him to Elijah Pierson’s front door. Matthias was a very persuasive man and demanding. He preyed on Elijah and his followers. He used his faith and power to gain wealth from his followers. This is how the kingdom of Matthias emerged. Matthias was the God of the house. They did what he told them to do. If they disobeyed him, he would punish them or curse them. The kingdom of Matthias was successful in the beginning but the sex scandals, and the death of Elijah caused the house to decline. People on the outside begin to realize what Matthias was doing. This ended up having Matthias on the trial for murder, and for abusing his daughter. The jury found Matthias guilty only for the abuse of his daughter Isabella. The kingdom of Matthias was a great book that gave a micro perspective on American history that played a significant role in Americans lives. Many of the events mentioned in the book, were events that shaped what we know as America today. The book helped give an understanding of what it was like to live In the Jackson era, as well as the market revolution, and religious reformation. The book indeed had drama, scandal, and gave the feeling of “I wonder what’s going to happen next” but the authors satirical managed to give its readers an insight of American history.
America was just colonies in this era, and were under England’s rule completely. Jamestown was the first English Colony on American land and was established by John Smith in 1607.
Between 1491 and 1754, the New England, middle, Chesapeake, and southern colonies developed in a way such that they must be viewed as four distinct societies with interlacing interactions and beliefs. These different societies were shaped by the different labor systems and economic characteristics, varying groups of religious founders, and response to salutary neglect and British taxation.
The English Settlement in the New World was largely the result of the Age of Exploration. The English started emigrated to the New World around the early 1600s; they settles in regions including the New England and the Chesapeake region and by the 18th century these two regions had developed their own society. These two regions had developed different political, economic and social system in their regions. The political differences were due to who governs the colony. The economic differences were due to the motives of the settlement. The social differences were due to the people who settled there, while the New England emigrated as a family, the Chesapeake emigrated with mostly male.
In the 17th century, the British colonies still identified themselves as European, but as the colonies expanded and grew more populous, they developed differing geographic, social, and economic systems. This difference between New England, and Chesapeake, is caused by the motivations for settlement between the two regions. While the New England colonies were mainly settled for religious motivations, most notably by the Puritans, the Chesapeake colonies were settled for economic prosperity. Also, while the Chesapeake colonies were mainly settled by individual young men seeking a profit, the New England colonies were settled by families hoping to settle and expand.
The English colonies greatly evolved from 1607 to 1745. England’s first permanent settlement was founded in 1607 and was named Jamestown. The colonists at Jamestown were all males, and the lack of women made it difficult for the settlers to establish any semblance of a society. After the arrival of women in the English colonies, real communities were beginning to form. The men would typically farm while the women tended to the house and children. Society revolved around religion- men and women looked to God for guidance as to how to live their lives and shape society. Many events including Bacon’s Rebellion, the Enlightenment, the Great Awakening, and the Zenger case had a great influence on the development of a democratic society in the English colonies; however, the most influential is the Enlightenment and the Zenger case.
Indian Givers How the Indians of the Americas transformed the world. This paper tries to explain Jack Weatherford's Indian Givers by examining the history of the Native American connection to many agricultural products that would not have been produced without the knowledge that Indians gave. Weatherford further stipulates that it is through these advances in agriculture that the United States has remained a strong contender in the global market, that without the influences of the Native Americans on the early settlers those early immigrants to America would not have survived. Through his work, "Indian Givers: How Indians of the Americas Transformed the World", Weatherford brings an insight to a people that most individuals have neglected to consider. The paper concludes that it is Weatherford's purpose to demonstrate that Native Americans have been a misrepresented and forgotten people when the history of North America is discussed.
The American colonies new England ,middle and southern colonies were very similar but different. The New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies grew differently over the period on 1619-1760. The three sets of colonies will prove that they were all different. There is hugely different between each other and style to lived. Such as, economics and agriculture. In this essay,
The original thirteen colonies, established in the 1600’s, shaped the course for the unique, unified and diverse America that we live in today. The thirteen colonies were initially diversified by being placed into three different groups according to their location. The three groups were as follows: the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. The New England colonies were Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Middle colonies were New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. And the Southern colonies were the Carolinas, Georgia, Maryland, and Virginia. The colonies were unified and stood together in hard times,
The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was settled by Captain John Smith, and was named after King James I. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. A very uneasy truce was finally settled between the natives, called the Powhatans, and the English (textbook 44-5). Economic growth and expanding their territories were the main priorities of the English in the Jamestown colonies.
...alf seconds. If Jackson did not change his view of life, work hard at everything he did, and excel at sports, who knows where he would be today. He could be sitting in a jail cell because he never changed his ways and lost his temper, or he could still be living in a small house in a small town. Jackson decided that he did not want to do that, and that he wanted his family to be free from a live full of poverty.
It was not until the 1700s that the thirteen colonies finally started to flourish on their own. The east coast of North America was soon booming with success. But the Northern and Southern colonies’ did not take exactly the same routes in order to reach success. The Southern and Northern colonies began to show similarities in immigration and social structure and began to show differences in their economy.
The three colonial regions blossomed quite differently in terms of economy. English colonists first settled in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Failing to find gold, however, people in the southern colonies grew tobacco and rice as marketable commodities. Since tobacco plantation was labor-intensive, a large number of the population was indentured servants and black slaves. Because of the high mortality rate and unbalanced sex ratio, headright system was created in order to attract more settlers. In New England, due to the poor soil condition, people mainly relied on fishing, and lumber. Also, the Navigation Acts stimulated shipbuilding industry. The Middle colonies were based on growing grains and trading with European nations as well as other colonies.
Between 1607 and 1733, Great Britain established thirteen colonies in the New World along the land’s eastern coast. England’s colonies included Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Though the colonies were classified as New England, middle or southern colonies, the colonists developed a unifying culture. With this new American culture, the colonists throughout the colonies began to think differently than their English cousins. Because colonial America displayed characteristics of a democratic society and, therefore, deviated from England’s monarchic ways, it was established as a democratic society.
Andrew Jackson is one of the most controversial presidents. Many regard him as a war hero, the father of the Democratic Party, an inspiring leader, and a spokesman for the common man. While there is plenty to praise about the seventh president, his legacy is tarnished by his racism, disregard for the law of the land, cruelty towards the Native Americans, and ruthless temper. Jackson was an intriguing man who was multi-faceted. One must not look at a singular dimension, and cast judgment on him as a whole. To accurately evaluate one of the most complex presidents, it is crucial to observe Jackson from all possible angles. Prior lifestyle, hardships in life, political ideology, lifestyle of the time, political developments, and his character
named after him. As readers we begin to learn the type of man that Jackson indeed
