Stephen King is one of the greatest American authors who was greatly influenced by history and it is clearly shown in his work. Throughout the 20th century there have been many world events that have influenced American culture today; many of these controversies in which America has been involved include: Russia’s Red Scare, The Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Historical Background Russia’s Red Scare was a period in history where every American was afraid of communist Russia. After World War II the U.S. had developed weapons the world had never seen before, nuclear weapons. During the Red Scare, Russia surprised the world when they set off their first nuclear weapon; this sent a ripple of fear throughout the U.S. because now their enemy had they technology to wipe out the American population. This led to a series of conflicts between the U.S. and Russia in the years to come. The Cold War lasted from 1947-1991. During this period, the U.S. and Russia were competing with each other to see who had superior military, weapons, and technology. While they never fought directly they would aid third-world countries such as North Korea and South Korea in The Korean War. Historians call it The Cold War because even though shots were never fired between the U.S. and Russia, they were fighting each other indirectly. Although The Korean War ended in 1953, the U.S. and Russia would still have many conflicts for the next few decades. The Vietnam War also involved America as they were fighting to protect democracy from other communist countries such as China. America was scared that if Vietnam was to become communist, the neighboring countries around it would also be... ... middle of paper ... ...lawed him” (King 294). This shows how the lion shaped hedge tried to bite Danny, but when his parents showed up they saw the actual damage to his leg. Works Cited Beahm, George. Stephen King from a to Z. The Cold War in 1945 to 1953 brought about a period of tension and hostility due to the feud between the United States and the Soviet Union. The period began with the end of the Second World War. The situation acquired the title for there was no physical active war between the two rivals. The probability of the tension got to be the fear of the then rise in nuclear ammunition. Things began to roll when a US based U2 sky plane got to take photos of some USSR intermediate ballistic missiles with the capability of transporting nuclear heads.
The Cold War was a post-World War II struggle between the United States. and its allies and the group of nations led by the Soviet Union. Direct military conflict did not occur between the two superpowers, but intense economic and diplomatic struggles erupted in the country. Different interests led to mutual suspicion and hostility in a rising philosophy. The United States played a major role in the ending of the Cold War.
However, there were some very close calls regarding nuclear weapons and the spreading of communism. The Cold War lasted from about 1947 until 1991 and during that time there were two additional wars fought; the Korean War and Vietnam War. The Korean started on June 25, 1950 when 75,000 North Korean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel which separated North and South Korea (Korean War). By July, American troops joined the war and the main purpose for this was to stop the spread of communism. The Korean War finally came to an end in 1953 and about 5 million troops and civilians lost their lives (Korean War). Overall, the war didn’t achieve much besides that communism did not spread to South Korea and to this day, North Korea and South Korea are still divided. The Vietnam War was another war that was fought in the time period during the Cold War. This war started on November 1, 1955 and lasted until April 30, 1975 with a total of 5 million casualties including American troops, Vietnamese soldiers, and Vietnamese citizens. In 1973, President Nixon ordered for the removal of all troops in Vietnam but many people did not agree with this back in America (Vietnam War). The war finally came to an end in 1975 when communist country North Vietnam seized control of South Vietnam and the country became unified as the socialist Republic of Vietnam
The Red Scare is a term that describe the fear of a potential rise of communists that the citizens of the United States felt back in the 1920s and 1950s. During the Red Scare, Many people were brought for questioning that will determine whether they supports the idea of communism or not and some of them who were brought for questioning were unfortunate. Those who were unfortunate lost their jobs, friends and they were also black listed from their previous jobs.
The cold war began because of conflicts not resolved from WWII, and was fought between the Soviet Union and the United States.
The Cold War was a period in history right after WWII ended and it ended in 1991, when the USSR broke apart. The conflict was between two types of governments: the communists and the capitalism (democrats). The USSR represented the communist side, while the U.S. represented the democrats. Both countries had nuclear weapons and did not want to fight each other directly because they didn’t want a Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). So they fought through other countries, by Proxy Wars.
The Cold War was the United States capitalists, versus the Soviet communists. It wasn't an actual war, but more of a grudge, because there wasn't any real fighting going on. It began in the late 1950's, after World War II. The "war" ended after the Berlin Wall was torn down, and the USSR fell in 1991. Although they hated each other, both powers had a mutual enemy, NAZI Germany. They even worked together in World War II. They only did so because President Roosevelt just wanted to end the war as quickly as possible. He's quoted on saying that he "hates war" (Peters).
There was a period in America’s history known as the Modern Era. In this age, the book industry was revolutionized, with new ways to write. One author went beyond the nom is Stephen King. He is a different kind of novelist, who desires to shake one down to their very soul. King once said, “I don’t want to just mess with your head; I want to mess with your life.” (1King) A brief look into his life and history as well as a few works will show evidence that he wants to incapacitate the reader from normal daily life.
Stephen King is best known for his graphic horror stories, whether they be novels or short stories. Many say that he is not one of the greatest authors of all time even though he has a fan base spanning from three generations and has written over fifty books. Although he is best known for his novels, he also has many bestselling short stories and numerous movies. King does not necessarily have to use gore and horror to get people to buy his works. His short stories in “Everything’s Eventual” is a good example of this. He uses his word choices and characters to take the simplest of stories and turn them into a complex and multi-level story. However, his writing style has changed over time and as he has gotten older he has veered away from all the dark horror stories. He has many components that make these stories the way they are that does not include horror. He uses obsessions, depression, and hell as themes. He still uses eerie atmospheres that make these stories still just as dark.
Vietnam is a small Asian country, 9000 miles away from the United States. Yet America felt that its national interest was threatened strongly enough to fight a war there. The explanation for this lies in the fear caused by the spread of communism at that time. The role of communism was extremely important in this conflict. You see, the US had to enter the war to stop the spread of communism in Asia since North Vietnam was communist.
The Cold War was a time after World War II when the USA and the Soviet Union became rivals seeking world influence. Right after the fall of Germany under the power of Hitler, the Soviet Union was attempting to control Eastern Europe while most of the west was determined to keep that from happening. This rivalry grew to form two major Factors, NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization versus the Warsaw Pact. NATO was made up of the United States, England, France, and West Germany while the Warsaw Pact was made up of pro-Soviet countries, such as the USSR, and all the countries controlled by the USSR. In a lot of ways, the Cold War was just a battle between capitalism and communism. By the 1950s, the worlds power was comprised of two superpowers,
Cold War is a term used to describe the state of conflict and tension and rivalry that existed between the United States and the Soviet Union and their allies from the period in the mid-forties until the early nineties.
By another account, the Cold War began in 1917 with the Bolshevik Revolution, and ended in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, having been a conflict between Bolshevism and Democracy. The Cold War got its name because both sides were afraid of fighting each other in such a “hot war”, nuclear weapons might destroy everything. So, instead, they fought each other indirectly. They played havoc with conflicts in different parts of the world. They used words as weapons.
The Cold War was fought by the two superpower which were the United States and the Soviet Union them both together emerged as superpowers after WWII was ended in 1945. They were the two most powerful states in the world but when the war ended they both had two different ideas on how to reconstruct Europe and this is how the cold war started. Between 1945-1991 they did not like each other very much. The united states wanted Europe to be rebuild along Democratic Capitalist lines while the Soviet Union being a communist country wanted Europe rebuild along Marxist lines. Due to this the Soviets moved quickly to occupy countries and establish communist governments. The Soviet Union helped establish Communist governments
The South East Asian country Vietnam became a Cold War battleground for the Second Indochina war which involved both the US and Russia’s interests. Once again it was the Capitalist struggle against Communism. The Vietnam War was a direct result of the USSR’s and China’s communist presence and pressure. America feared a chain reaction was occurring among the other Asian countries that made them change to communism one by one. America wanted to prevent this from occurring and that is why they were so quick to help the South combat the Communist North. In the end however, their attempts were fruitless for they were unable to overthrow or prevent the spread of communism through all of Vietnam.
