The story of the Minotaur is interesting, extraordinary in a strange way and mysterious. In Greek Mythology, Greek People believed that the Minotaur is born as half human and half bull, his body was a human and his head was a bull because of his mother was in love with a bull. For this purpose, the legend of Minotaur was born. This monster was basically useless; all he did was killing and eating people when he became hungry since he had no source for food. The Minotaur was violent and evil towards the town also, he was the major problem in that time for the old generation. New generations should have programs in school nowadays about the danger of the drugs and how to deal with them. Moreover, New generations should advise and warn their friends if they notice things like unusual activities around. Also, the new generations have to be extremely careful with friends who use drugs because in fact they
The myth Theseus and the Minotaur’s thematic statement is, taking risks can be unknown and the outcome can be mysterious,
According to Plutarch’s Life of Theseus, the author is making a comparison between Theseus and Romulus, the founder of Rome (1). In it, Theseus is not born an Athenian, though he is the son of the Athenian king. When he reaches young adulthood, he must travel to Athens, but chooses to do so over the land instead of sea, which he’s told is safer. For he’s heard of the hero Heracles, and Theseus wishes to be as great a hero as he (6). On his way, he is credited with slaying Periphetes the club-bearer, Sinis the pine-bender, the Crommyonian sow, Sciron, Cercyon, and Demastes. In this way, he made the roads to Athens safer, cleared of banditry. But his most famous act is that of slaying the Cretan Minotaur. Athens was expected to provide seven young men and seven young women every nine years as sacrifices to the kingdom of Crete, where they’d be put into a labyrinth with the feared Minotaur. Should the Minotaur, a creature who is half-man, half-bull, be slain then Athens’ sacrifices would en...
Not Knowing that Theseus was his son he had planned on poising him. Theseus then pulled his sword on the king, king Aegeus instantly recognized the sword and proclaimed to the city of Athens that Theseus is his son and heir. Years before Theseus had arrived to Athens the king of Crete Minos’ son, Androgeus was visiting the Athenian King Aegeus. Aegeus, “he had sent his guest on an expedition full of peril to kill a dangerous bull” (Hamilton 2. 211). Unfortunately Mino’s son had died on the expedition and Minos acted violently and invaded the country capturing Athens. He declared that he would destroy the city unless every nine years the people sent him a tribute of seven maidens and seven youths to the Labyrinth for the Minotaur to devour them. The year had came for the sacrifices for the Minotaur, Theseus at once came forward and offered himself to be one of the victims, in hope of killing the Minotaur in order to stop the sacrifices and save his
The myths which prove the contradictory behavior of the gods, acting as both benefactors and tormentors of man, can readily be explained when viewed in light of the prime directive for man, to worship the gods and not “overstep,” and the ensuing “Deus ex Mahina” which served to coerce man to fulfill his destiny as evidenced by the myths: “Pandora,” “Arachne, and “Odysseus.” Humankind and it’s range of vision over the gods beauty and power portrayed them to be benefactors but unseemingly it depicted their affliction towards humans.
Aeneas was never held captive by any of the gods as was Odysseus. Aeneas got help from Venus (Goddess of love), his mother. She convinced him to stop fighting because she wanted him to rescue his family which was a lot more important. Jupiter also helped him because Aeneas’s wife told Jupiter that Aeneas was going to kill himself, so she wanted him to send Aeneas a sign telling him not to kill himself. Aeneas was going to do this because he found his father almost dead and decided to take his own life.
Theseus first displays his heroic nature when he was seven years old. Hercules came home and took of his lion’s skin. Convincing as it looks, Theseus friends ran away. “Theseus quickly grabbed an axe and fiercely attacked it” (244). Theseus was ready to risk his life at the age of seven. Theseus friends were terrified but Theseus showed them that he was fearless. Many thrive to obtain the characteristic of fearless and are willing to do anything to achieve the title. Perseus announces that he has no family wealth for the king but Perseus can offer his service. “I would even kill the terrible Gorgon Medusa”(200). Perseus behead the mortal Gorgon with one slice of his sharp sickle. Perseus risked his life just to prove his loyalty and courage. Theseus is a number of heroic things such as strong, selfless etc. Most importantly he is fearless and continuously is able to display it through his actions. Theseus courageously and fearlessly volunteered himself to kill the Minotaur just like how he killed Marathon. This shows that he’s not afraid to kill anyone. He was admired by many, including the Athenians due to his courage and honour. Theseus was known to defeat extremely difficult
The war on drugs in our culture is a continuous action that is swiftly lessening our society. This has been going on for roughly 10-15 years and has yet to slow down in any way. Drugs continue to be a problem for the obvious reason that certain people abuse them in a way that can lead to ultimate harm on such a person. These drugs do not just consist of street drugs (marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy), but prescription medications as well. Although there are some instances where drugs are being used by subjects excessively, there has been medical research to prove that some of these drugs have made a successful impact on certain disorders and diseases.
Drugs are not only a problem for older generations, but often times those in younger generations become involved in the drug trade as well. According to Anderson (1990), “Children who become deeply engaged in t...
All throughout Edith Hamilton’s rendition of Theseus’ story she displays example for all three parts of the characteristic from Theseus’ superior strength, the prime example from the story is when Theseus kills the sleeping Minotaur without any weapons and only his bare hands, an example of Theseus’ intelligence comes during his reign as the King of Athens, he’s described as a wise king who chose a more democratic rule to govern his people, and an example for Theseus’ courage lies in his selfless actions to volunteer himself as one of the sacrifices to enter the Labyrinth to face the Minotaur. Although Hamilton’s description of Theseus’ legacy speaks for itself, “Theseus was, of course, bravest of the brave as all heroes are, but unlike other heroes he was as compassionate as he was brave and a man of great intellect as well as bodily strength (Hamilton 166.)” Just in Hamilton’s quick summary of Theseus’ character is a testament that he doesn’t fit the role of an epic hero but he is the literal archetype which epic heroes strive to be. Theseus isn’t just superhumanly strong, like Hercules, or only incredibly courageous to the point it’d be stupid, like Perseus, Theseus is superior in strength, intelligence, and
Young people are using mood-changing substances at an increasingly younger age. Persistent substance abuse among youth is often accompanied by a plethora of problems, including school related hardships, health-related problems, poor family relationships, mental health issues, and run-ins with the justice system. There are also significant consequences involving the community, and society in general. Studies show drug use at a young age increases the desire to abuse as you get older. Society looks at drugs as being a taboo, which is the norm for our country. However other countries see drug use as a way of connection with oneself and others in another realm. Now whether drug use is harmless or harmful is a matter of your personal preference.
Drugs cause an overall disturbance in a subjects’ physiological, psychological and emotional health. “At the individual level, drug abuse creates health hazards for the user, affecting the educational and general development of youths in particular” (“Fresh Challenge”). In youth specifically, drug abuse can be triggered by factors such as: a parent’s abusive behavior, poor social skills, family history of alcoholism or substance abuse, the divorce of parents or guardians, poverty, the death of a loved one, or even because they are being bullied at school (“Drugs, brains, and behavior”) .
...ssures to be the best they can be academically. With all these pressures of adolescence on the rise, more and more teens are falling prey to the alluring “high” that allows a temporary leave from their problems and stress. Because teens lack the maturity and knowledge to understand long term consequences, they tend not to think about the down falls that they will face as a result of the drug use. This is especially true when it come to marijuana, as it is seen by so many as the harmless drug. With the increased use of marijuana by youth over the last three decades, it is imperative that better preventative measures, and firmer penalties, be put in place to educate and raise awareness concerning the risks and dangerous side effects that marijuana use can have. Only once society has put these preventative measures in to action, will there be an effective change seen.
Perhaps the most important factor is the responsibility that each individual has to do their best to continue to fight the war on drugs. This begins at home, educating our young people from a young age on the dangers of using drugs and experimenting with it.
