The Killer Sweetness
Just like “Big Brother” from A Brave New World, the government is allowing manufactures to pump people full of a dastardly artificial sweetener. What is this killer sweetness, and why is it still allowed to be distributed throughout the United States? The devilish sweetener is hidden in everyday foods that most people would not even think to be worried about. The culprit can be found in foods like diet soft drinks, milk, sugar-free candies, and even sneaked its way into children’s vitamins. This toxic sweetener has been linked to multiple symptoms. The biggest risk caused from continuous usage is death but due to the high grossing income that big businesses make from the synthetic death sugar, it is allowed to still be

manufactured in the food we eat. It all started in 1965, when a chemist for the G.D. Searle Company, James Schlatter stumbled across an artificial sweetener while he was trying to create a drug to prevent ulcers. He was practicing unsafe laboratory procedures when he licked his finger while turning a page and found the chemicals on his hand tasted sweet (Ajinomoto). After that his new discovery would be called Aspartame (Mercola.com). Aspartame is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, has zero carbohydrates and no calories; it has two amino acids, aspartic and phenylalanine and an alcohol known as methanol make up the compound (Michael). To get their new product on the market G.D. Searle would try to push the approval to the Food and Drug Administration (Mercola.com). The discrepancies from various reports in the research of the sweetener, would shut down the proposal (Mercola.com). A related video on Mercola.com says that “The research showed the number of side effects including a high risk of brain tumors. It also revealed fraud and mutilation of data done on Aspartame studies.” A few years later in 1981 with a new United States president in office, G.D. Searle again asked permission from the FDA to sell their product (Mercola.com). This time G.D. Searle’s new CEO, Donald Rumsfeld, helped select the new FDA commissioner, Dr. Arthur Hall Hayes Jr. Hayes Jr. directed a council of five people to grant approval; three said no and two said yes (Mercola.com). Not pleased with the result Hayes Jr. appointed another person to the council and they said yes (Mercola.com). With a draw they needed a tie-breaker, so Hayes Jr. stepped in and voted yes. With the approval aspartame was soon rushed to the market without any regards from the past test failures (Mercola.com). This shows the efforts of a big company ability to manipulate the system and establishes the how aspartame was introduced to the public. This is a typical and common practice, and shows the motives of power hungry politicians controlled by the deep pockets of big corporations. As a result it leads to the removal of safeguards for the public. As for today, there are more and more test are being performed throughout multiple countries not just the United States.
The test are showing astonishing results that the makers of aspartame do not want to get out to the masses. A test was conducted by a well-established Italian cancer institute, Ramazzini Foundation (CSPI). It was comprised of a long term study linking the effects of aspartame on lab rats. The rats develop an increase rate in lymphomas, leukemia, and breast cancers (CSPI). The Center for Science in the Public Interest has given this new study to the FDA. After review of the information, should the FDA discover the claim to have truth to it, according to the United States’ laws the FDA has to revoke aspartame’s approval on the market (CSPI). This in turns means a lot of money will be lost both from the corporation and the politicians. So will the study just get over looked again like in the past?
The executive director from CSPI informs people “Because aspartame is so widely consumed, it is urgent that the FDA evaluate whether aspartame still poses a ‘reasonable certainty of no harm,’ the standard used for gauging the safety of food additives,” He also gives helpful advice by saying “Consumers, particularly parents, shouldn’t wait for the FDA to act. People shouldn’t panic, but they should stop buying beverages and foods containing aspartame.”
There are other problems correlated with aspartame other than the included increase rate of cancers, patients also suffer from other side effects of aspartame. This is a list of several of
them: • Severe Headaches • Panic Attacks • Isolated Blindness • Epileptic Seizures • Dizziness • Memory Impairment • Weight Gain • Depression Most of these are curable but can lead permanent damage (Dr. Hull). Aspartame has also been linked to insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and even high blood pressure (PLOS One). The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition says “phenylalanine may cross the blood-brain barrier and cause severe changes in the production of very important neurotransmitters. Methanol breaks down into formate [formaldehyde], which in turn is very cytotoxic and can even cause blindness.” Someone suffering from one or more of these symptoms simple wean themselves off aspartame and eventually eradicate it from their diet completely. The makers, of course have their objections to the claims against their product. Big corporations force feed people false information to make them think it’s just a conspiracy cooked up. They pay for their own doctors, scientist and various experts to even say that their product is healthy. Many of the experts say in order for it to have a dangerous effect on a 165 pound man, he would have to consume nearly the equivalent of nineteen cans of diet soft drinks a day. (American Cancer Society). Which seems like a lot but when that same person eats yogurt sweetened by aspartame, puts table packets in their coffee, chews gum or just a simple enjoys sugar-free candy the milligrams add up quickly. The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also mentions that the supporters of aspartame have the view of “if no adverse side effects are visible after a single large administered dose of aspartame, it is believed that aspartame has no effect.” The supporters look towards the short term studies for the results they want and have no interest in the long term effects. Another flaw in these case studies are, they are done with the subjects being adults in the later years of their life; they have not tested the effects on a toddler or a child (CSPI). Children have different reactions to things they consume; that is why the makers of children’s medicine make medicine that differs from medicine given to adults. These companies even asked for permission to exclude aspartame from the required ingredients list, but they still want to keep it in the food (Mercola.com). Now if there is nothing to worry about with aspartame why would they go through all the trouble to have it removed from the ingredients list? Most of the makers test are outdated and lack the modern technology used today. James Huff, the Associate Director of Chemical Carcinogenesis at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), has made contact with the FDA to have them review and perform new test on the matter. David Rall, the former director of NIEHS and it National Toxicology Program inquires that “Any compound that is that widely used needs to be retested with modern methods every once in a while.” The new individual party studies have even made some health organizations change their status of aspartame from mildly harmless to dangerous (CSPI). There are many questions yet to be answered and many conflicting results behind the truth of aspartame. It is up to the people who consume the product to do further research and find what benefits them. People should not go into a complete frenzy over aspartame, instead they should be able to think freely for themselves. They should know that through continuous use of this killer sweetness, will eventually lead to more dangerous consequences.
Aspartame will increase the levels of phenylalanine on the foetal side of the placenta. Increased levels of phenylalanine can interfere with the growth of the foetal brain. As the foetus absorbs the nutrients from the food and drinks which the mother consumes, diet drinks are not recommended during pregnancy. When aspartame is metabolized, it breaks down into methanol, which is dangerous for pregnant women (Elsas; 1987). Although it could be said that this information is not relevant due to the information being published in 1987, the source is credible as the information was posted under the Doctors name and at the Emroy University. The source has also been published and therefore can be considered to have been peer
...t pain, headaches, equilibrium problems and manic depression. The Desert Storm incident proved that aspartame is indeed harmful when consumed in excess or when consumed in general.
...n potential death. What the FDA should do is support funding for more advertising, encouraging all citizens to be more aware with the potentially hazardous products they consume. I’m sure if people without food allergies were more aware of the potential harm their daily snack could cause to someone else, they would start to use a lot more caution.
The FDA is vital to our country, albeit makes mistakes. Sometimes the FDA can be too
Consumer need to cut down their sugar intake by drinking more water, or buying natural sugar. Natural sugar has its faults like high blood pressure, but not cancer, or liver disease. There are new things that are found in processed sugar like Somalia, or anything the factory produces. The corporation says that processed sugar is better because it has been cured from disease by using bleach, but they are destroying the natural effects of sugar. The natural effects of sugar are simple, telling the body it doesn’t need anymore. Natural sugars are never bare sugars usually, they are found in fruits like berries and citrus and sugar
Poisoned syrup has caused at least eight mass poisonings in the world in the last twenty years. Thousands of people have died in these poisonings. It turns out that 3 out of the four most recent cases the syrup was made in China, a humongous source of counterfeit drugs (Hooker et al). Muckraking does still exist in 2016 in newspaper as demonstrated by Jake Hooker and Walt Bogdanich of the New York Times series.
Probably some of the most pleasurable and enjoyable memories of a person has to do with sweets. When thinking back to birthdays, there is always the memory of the wonderful cake that mother beautifully made and decorated with frosting and glazes. A typical night out with dad can be transformed into a magical evening with a trip to the ice cream parlor. The end of a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner turns heavenly when a hot apple pie is brought to the table and topped with delicious, melting vanilla ice cream. A good wedding is never complete without the cutting of the splendid multi-level wedding cake, when the happy new couple gets to playfully shove and smear cake and white frosting into each other’s smiling faces. Everyone knows that as a child, the only good part about going to the dentist is getting the candy bar at the end of the visit. Why do some people get sick after eating too much suger? Some people do not even know that the abuse of sugar can lead to negative effects on your body. There is something strangely enjoyable and resplendent about the consumption of sugar. Why is it that sugar is so deliciously enjoyable and at the same time a food product that has many negative affects on people’s health?

Artificial sweeteners are fake sugar substitutes that many people use to maintain their weight and diabetes. But, what many people do not understand is that some specific artificial sweeteners are not all they are cracked up to be. According to who consume diet coke, which contains aspartame, on a regular basis will be fatter one year from the time they began drinking diet coke. Many artificial sugars are in the everyday items that people eat/drink including soda, chewing gum, energy drinks, granola bars, cereal, and much more. There are many aversive health effects that are associated with specific artificial sweeteners. Some artificial sweeteners such as Sucralose have no known aversive health effects and therefore are the safest option for human consumption. Aspartame on the other hand is extremely dangerous and it can have horrible long term effects on the human body. The sad thing is that most of America has no idea what these artificial sugars really do to your body and how harmful they can be. The most common artificial sweeteners include aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, stevia, neotame, and Acesulfame- K. Although artificial sweeteners are all assumed to be healthy alternatives, it is important for Americans to learn the facts about them this way everyone is safe and confident knowing what they are specifically consuming on a daily basis.

We are all familiar with sugar. It is sweet, delicious, and addictive; yet only a few of us know that it is deadly. When it comes to sugar, it seems like most people are in the mind frame knowing that it could be bad for our health, but only a few are really taking the moderate amounts. In fact, as a whole population, each and everyone of us are still eating about 500 extra calories per day from sugar. Yes, that seems like an exaggerated number judging from the tiny sweet crystals we sprinkle on our coffee, but it is not. Sugar is not only present in the form of sweets and flavourings, it is hidden in all the processed foods we eat. We have heard about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt, but we know very little about the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. There still isn’t any warnings about sugar on our food labels, nor has there been any broadcasts on the serious damages it could do to our health. It has come to my concern during my research that few
After becoming aware of the dangers of aspartame, one might ask, how much aspartame is safe? “The FDA has set the acceptable daily intake of aspartame at 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight” (Pratini, 2014). Therefore, drinking small amounts of aspartame daily obviously will not affect a person as much as drinking several drink cans daily would. When an individual begins experiencing symptoms, they do not think the long-term use of aspartame will affect them, so they do
In 1879, while developing new food preservatives a young Johns Hopkins chemistry research assistant accidentally discovered that one of the organic compounds he was testing was intensely sweet. He named it “saccharum”, the Greek word for sugar. He further learned that it passed through the body unchanged and was thus a safe artificial sweetener for diabetics (Anderson, 1995). Similar sugar substitutes are used today.
This is made by pressing sugar cane stalks to extract the plant's sugary juice, and then allowing the resultant liquid to crystallize. The sugar crystals are ground and sold. This ancient procedure produces the only real powdered sugar that the world has ever known. The powder is a beige color in its natural and organic form. The crystals of real cane juice should always be purchased instead of the brilliantly white "cane sugar", which is commonly known as "table sugar". Evaporated cane juice is our top recommendation for anyone needing a powdered sugar, and we confidently use it ourselves. The only ingredient listed should be "evaporated cane juice". If a product's label has any deviations from this, then you may know that its producer is dishonest, because it is not truly sugar anymore. Be cautious to never confuse evaporated cane juice with "pure" cane juice, or any of the other word combinations that
Artificial sweeteners have become a vital part of the sugar industry and are marketed as zero-calorie sugars that can cause no harm to the body, but do they truly cause no harm? Although these sweeteners do not directly cause health problems they do have very strong connections to the development of diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and misconceptions about weight loss.
