Pursuing a career in Education has led me to different philosophical perspectives of education that will be utilized in my future classroom. Behind every educational facility and educator lies a value system and set of beliefs that influence their philosophy of education. Progressivism teaching methods recognize cooperative learning activities as a practical method of instruction. Working in groups was not always part of my previous education. Normally working independently has left me feeling uncomfortable and untrusting of others when working in groups. It has also left me intimidated by my peers with different racial and ethnic backgrounds. I feel that if students are frequently exposed to cooperative learning activities that they will be more trusting and more group oriented toward a unified goal. My first cooperative learning experiences in college have taught me in a short period of time that just because someone is different, does not mean that they are incompetent; additionally, learning from students is an important part of being a teacher. It is important for children to learn this lesson early in life, not until their college years. I believe that it is advantageous to expose children to as much racial and ethnic diversity as possible to assure a child a fair and truly beneficial
Malcolm X is born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska. His life is full of discrimination and racial violence. When Malcolm as a child he moved to Michigan with his family where they continue to experience persecution and violence. White people murder Malcolm’s father and forced his mother into a mental hospital. Malcolm moves to Boston, to live with his half-sister, Ella. In Boston Malcolm quickly becomes involved in urban nightlife. Malcolm was into gambling, drinking, doing drugs, and dating an older white woman, Sophia. He then moves to New York, where he begins working as a hustler in Harlem. Malcolm’s various jobs there include running numbers, selling drugs, and steering white people to black brothels. When life becomes too dangerous is Harlem, he returns to Boston, where he becomes a house burglar and is eventually arrested. In prison, Malcolm transforms himself, converting to the branch of Islam promoted by the Nation of Islam. Inspired by faith, Malcolm stops using drugs, he reads voraciously, prays, and studies English and Latin. The prison releases Malcolm on parole. Malcolm rises quickly from the rank of temple assistant in Detroit to the Nation’s first national minister. Malcolm X becomes known throughout the United States, even outside of Muslim circles, as a fiery advocate for black unity and militancy. The Nation of Islam’s leaders resent and fear Malcolm despite his allegiance to their cause, and they suspend him from the organization. The Nation of Islam’s frustration with Malcolm intensifies, and Malcolm begins receiving death threats. After a divisive argument with Elijah Muhammad the leader of Nation of Islam, Malcolm leaves organisation.
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. They have courage, intellect and sometimes they need the god’s help, and because of these factors enrich the story and the hero’s journey. As the great majority of our children are being educated in public schools, it is all important that the standards of citizenship should be of the best. Whether we send our children to private school or public school. Is education preparing students for a specific career or is it about teaching students lifelong values, discipline, and the ability to explore new ideas and to think independently? For the 21st century the purpose of education is to prepare children to compete in the global environment with the skills to think critically with innovation and design.
Children having children, this is an all too familiar phrase that has become a popular adage among people in today’s society. But as popular as this phrase maybe, it does not even begin to scratch the surface that lies beneath the complex issues of teenage pregnancy. There are many adverse concerns that encompass teen pregnancy, to which society has even developed its own views upon. Concerns that develop from adolescent pregnancy can have negative impacts for teenage parents, children, and even society. According to Furstenberg, “In 1995, in his State of the Union address, President Bill Clinton singled out teenage childbearing as “our most serious social problem”. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services (n.d.), “In 2012, there were 29.4 births for every 1,000 adolescent females ages 15-19, or to simply put it an estimated 305,420 babies were born to females within this age group, which ninety eight percent of these births had taken place outside of wedlock” (See Table 1). Even though there has been a decrease in the number of teen pregnancies over the years, the number in the U.S. still ranks the highest when compared to other developed countries in the world (Deborah, n.d.). Communities everywhere need to come together to develop strategies that focuses on reducing teen pregnancies in the United States.

The importance of understanding global warming will control the impact it has on the Earth’s environment. Global warming is the increased warming effect of the atmospheric temperature resulting in a change of the Earth’s climate (USGS.gov, 2008). The increase warming of the temperature is the result from two greenhousegases such as carbon dioxide and methane that are being filtered and trapped into the Earth’s atmosphere. The layers of Earth’s atmosphere is to protect life from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space (nasa.gov, 2010), but if the atmosphere’s layers becomes thinner, its vital role of protection will diminish. Landfill wastes, industries and deforestation are why global warming exists, in turn will affect all life on Earth.

Progressivism is a theory of education that encourages students to think on their own and create their own ideas to test out. In order, for the students to figure out the answer to their new idea or concept learned with hands on experiences used in the classroom. The progressivist named John Dewey believed that people learned most when their past experiences related to the concepts they are currently learning. This allows the students to connect with their experience that happened in life to the new stuff they would currently learn in the classrooms. In which, the students would engage more to learn about the new ideas or knowledge. Progressivists also believed that education should allow students to learn from each other to create a better society. The teacher’s role in the classroom is to keep in check that the students are on task but not under mind their new ideas while doing an experiment. The methods they use are student focused or orientated such as discussion, mental modeling. The students can engage with their peers and discuss their new ideas or own opinions with other without any judgement of being wrong. . It is known that everyone establish different educational views and beliefs. With difference in views and beliefs, holds different perspectives on purpose of learning, education and schools. As a Christian educator, I believe that the purpose of learning is to become enlightened on world scenarios, and to feel alive. As a Christian educator, I believe that the purpose of learning in an educational school setting is to procure students with new or existing, information, performances, abilities, standards, or partialities, to be utilized to fulfil their life purpose.
Education can be viewed as the key to all locks in life and the structure of that key is dependent upon the education of each individual. Obstacles hinder everyone on a daily basis, weather it's going outside to check the mail or attempting to earn a degree at a university. A thought process is required for both goals, and education decides on the rate of success. The goal may not be reached but education will still be present especially at times of failure. This repeating cycle of education and failure is the foundation of every successful individual.
The purpose of education is to teach the basics of knowledge and to challenge each individual to learn. The realization that I will have the power to make a difference in a child’s life is sometimes overwhelming. Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. The role of the student is to discover, engage, and express themselves.
My philosophy of education is a combination of essentialism and progressivism . I feel that knowledge can be learned from a textbook, but I also want my students to use other means of knowledge. I fell in certain times, I should be the center of the classroom and other times, the students should be the center. Education is about the students and I am there to guide them through their journey. I think it's important to let children learn by exploring. By doing this, they choose what information is important and should be retained. When it comes to learning, students should always be in the center. The teachers are only there to mentor and improve upon a child's skills. In my mind progressivism with a mix of essentialism is the best philosophy for me to follow.
