Families are complex and complicated things. They can function as individuals or come together to function as one entity. There is always at least one person in a family that is the glue of the family, what causes it to function properly or improperly in some cases. In the case of Long Day’s Journey into Night written by Eugene O’Neill, it is Mary Tyrone that is the proverbial family glue that causes the family problems through and through. Since Mary blames everyone but herself, that seems to point out that perhaps she herself is the one to blame for the issues. All four of the major characters in the play, the Tyrone family, have their individual issues of alcoholism, illness and addiction that affect the family as a whole. Overall, it is Mary and her issues that bring the family together while tearing it apart at the same time, making her the central character. This also makes the chiefly to blame for the family woes. At one point in the play, Mary defends her actions by claiming that nothing can change the course of things that are meant to happen in life, that a person has no control over their fate. That is untrue. People inherently have choices to make that guide them through their lives, which can be influenced by outside people and decisions, but there is never a chance to not choose where you will go. Ultimately, each person has to make a choice to move forward in their life, and sometimes there is never a good choice, just a less bad one to make. A situation is reached because of one’s previous choices, not because one’s fate is resolute and already decided how you end up. That is decided by the route the individual chooses to take. There is always a choice. Mary is the central character in the play, if for no other ... ... middle of paper ... ...self now. Mary claims multiple times throughout the play that no one can help what life has done to them. Earlier in this paper, presented is the idea that her view is incorrect because every person has a choice. If one believes Mary’s view, than the play is in sense fatalistic because all of the characters (except Edmund) are stuck and are unable to break free of the habits that they develop due to heredity and environment. But if one believes that it is the choices a person makes and not fate, than there is not a fatalistic viewpoint on the play. Overall, Mary Tyrone is the central character in Long Day’s Journey into Night written by Eugene O’Neill. It is through her blaming everyone else that the reader can come to the conclusion that Mary herself is to blame for the family’s woe’s. And through not believing Mary’s view of fate, the play cannot be fatalistic.
...e on her part. Throughout the story, the Mother is portrayed as the dominant figure, which resembled the amount of say that the father and children had on matters. Together, the Father, James, and David strived to maintain equality by helping with the chickens and taking care of Scott; however, despite the effort that they had put in, the Mother refused to be persuaded that Scott was of any value and therefore she felt that selling him would be most beneficial. The Mother’s persona is unsympathetic as she lacks respect and a heart towards her family members. Since the Mother never showed equality, her character had unraveled into the creation of a negative atmosphere in which her family is now cemented in. For the Father, David and James, it is only now the memories of Scott that will hold their bond together.
Thesis statement: The relationship Holden and Blanche have between family and people in society leads them to an inner turmoil, which eventually results in their psychological breakdowns.
Mary Katherine, a young adult with sociopathic behavior, displays her disorder with frequent outbursts, lack of remorse and disregard for social norms throughout the novel We Have Always Lived in The Castle by Shirley Jackson. Her sociopathic tendencies are constant in the novel with mention that this behavior has been consistent since she was a child. Mary Katherine progressively shows her volatile actions in the story and her actions cause way to a multitude of problems for anyone in her path, especially her close older sister Constance. Her personality disorder coupled with her schizotypal disposition is inherent and not due to being spoiled or temperamental despite her being raised wealthy in a large household.
Mary had very loving and caring parents whose names were Sam and Pasty McLeod. Her father, Sam, often worked on the farm that they owned. Her mother, Pasty delivered and picked white people’s laundry. Mary often got to come along and play with the mother’s daughter. Once, Mary got into a fight with a little white girl who said that Mary couldn’t read at that time in South Carolina, it was illegal to teach a black person. This made Mary mad, and she wanted to do something about it.
There are many forces in the tragic play of Romeo and Juliet that are keeping the two young, passionate lovers apart, all emanating from one main reason. In this essay I will discuss these as well as how love, in the end, may have been the cause that led to the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Their strong attraction to each other, which some call fate, determines where their forbidden love will take them.
Romeo and Juliet made many choices out of their own free will, including an irreversible decision that ended in despair for all characters. “All are punished!”(5.3.305). In the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, the actions of Romeo, the actions of Juliet, and the actions of others prove that free will is more paramount than fate in the plot of the play.
O’Connor emphasized human problem and use spiritual words to connect the grandmother character with everyone. This family uses a traditional vacation that families go on every year to show daily problem, attitudes and emotion while on a road trip. O’Connor use language in the South to tell the story. I think the grandmother use various types of language to express her thoughts and feeling. The author push the audiences to feel the amount of pride the grandmother have when it comes to identifying what she wants. O’Connor shows how dominant the grandmother is when she does an excellent job in persuading the family to go where she wants to go. This is a perfect example of the amount of manipulate the grandmother use throughout the story.
To begin with, the narrator husband name is John, who shows male dominance early in the story as he picked the house they stayed in and the room he kept his wife in, even though his wife felt uneasy about the house. He is also her doctor and orders her to do nothing but rest; thinking she is just fine. John is the antagonist because he is trying to control
Furthermore, Mary’s father was abusive in the family home to both Mary and her mother. A lifelong criminal, who was known to commit violent armed robberies, was not a good influence for Mary. Billy was often out of work, depending on earnings form Betty to sustain the house. It must be noted that there is some question if Billy is actually Mary’s father, given Betty’s profession; chances are great that Billy was just another victimizer in Mary’s lif...
James Joyce wrote the book Dubliners; Joyce expresses many different types of emotions throughout the book. The emotions portray individuals in society, and light and dark. The emotions of individuals are examined throughout the stories by other members in society. The stories that express the ideas are: “The Encounter,” “Eveline”, and “The Dead.” The symbolism of individuals in society expresses many different situations that are happening in the characters lives. The symbolism of light goes along with the idea of feeling happy and enjoying life. The theme of dark shows the individuals fighting, and having a negative outlook on life.
Each character in O’Connor’s short story brings to surface the bitter way society functions today. Take for instance the grandmother, shows how manipulative society can be when things do not go their way through out the story the grandmother manipulates her way to bring the trip to a halt and in to trouble and even when she knows she is lost she reaches out and surprises everyone by trying to side with the convict “Why your one of my babies. Your one of my own children!” (O'Connor 238-248).This quote is. A direct representation of how manipulative the grandmother can be in the story, and in many ways how society is today. Society will manipulate anything from the news to information to better fit a cause and the excuse given is that it is done to better civilization.
Aristotle, as a world famous philosopher, gives a clear definition of tragedy in his influential masterpiece Poetics, a well-known Greek technical handbook of literary criticism. In Aristotle’s words, a tragedy is “an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude, language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play, the form of action, not of narrative, through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions”(Aristotle 12). He believes that a tragedy should be serious and complete in appropriate and pleasurable language; the plot of tragedy should be dramatic, whose incidents will arouse pity and fear, and finally accomplish a catharsis of emotions. His theory of tragedy has been exerting great influence on the tragedy theories in the past two thousand years. Shakespeare, as the greatest dramatist in western literature, also learnt from this theory. Hamlet is one of the most influential tragedies written by Shakespeare. The play vividly focuses on the theme of moral corruption, treachery, revenge, and incest. This essay will first analyze Shakespeare’s Hamlet under Aristotle’s tragedy theory. Then this essay will express personal opinion on Aristotle’s tragedy theory. The purpose of this essay is to help the reader better understand Aristotle’s theory of tragedy and Shakespeare’s masterpiece Hamlet.
The play ‘night, Mother by Marsha Norman contains two characters who are both fairly important to the play and develop in significant ways. The most changed character throughout would be her mama, Thelma. Jessie has epilepsy and is battling the decision of killing herself throughout the play. She decides to tell her mama the plan, so it does not come as a surprise and she is truly heartbroken by her decision. During the play, Norman presents the connection between the two and how they change individually.
Hamlet is the best known tragedy in literature today. Here, Shakespeare exposes Hamlet’s flaws as a heroic character. The tragedy in this play is the result of the main character’s unrealistic ideals and his inability to overcome his weakness of indecisiveness. This fatal attribute led to the death of several people which included his mother and the King of Denmark. Although he is described as being a brave and intelligent person, his tendency to procrastinate prevented him from acting on his father’s murder, his mother’s marriage, and his uncle’s ascension to the throne.
Regardless of a person’s age or literary preference it is undeniable that William Shakespeare had a flair for composing dramatic tragedies. Tragedy is a powerful underlining theme which portrays the qualities of the human capacity. In one of Shakespeare’s most brilliant plays, Hamlet, tragedy is portrayed through the protagonist’s constant contemplation of suicide. Shakespeare often alludes to powerful images of death by using pathos and bereavement in life to be inconsequential. In the play, Hamlet, William Shakespeare produces a tragedy which illustrates the suggestion of suicide and the imagery of death as solutions to problems through Ophelia’s demise, the minor characters reflection upon death, and most importantly the protagonist Hamlet.
