The Journalist and the Murderer is a comprehensive investigation of the Jeffrey MacDonald case. In addition it is also close examination of the role and ethics of a journalist . Janet Malcolm the author of the book evaluates the relationship between the journalist and the subject and she claims that "there is no such thing as a dispassionate observer.. Every narrative is inflected by the narrator's bias." Although her conclusion does not provide a clear definition of the journalist ethics, however, she believes there is a point when a journalist has to present himself as a journalist and pretending to be a friend.
