A large number of drunken people arrive loudly as Socrates finished his speech. One of them happened to be Alcibiades who demanded to see Agathon. He continues to praise Agathon as the smartest and best looking man in town, asking if he could join the party in which they all agreed. Alcibiades was asked to sit next to Agathon, which he planted his seat right in between him and Socrates. Socrates ends up getting accused by Alcibiades because he asked him how he happened to trap Agathon and sit next to him, which senses a lot of jealousy coming from Alcibiades. He asked Agathon for help and stated that everything he’s saying is to create a drift between them.

The role reversal that was mentioned in Diotima’s speech occurs again because Alcibiades is the pursuer and Socrates the pursued. Alcibiades’ speech had laughter when he finished. Socrates was compared to Eros in this comedic speech. My friend who is a philosophy major said Plato compares tragedy and comedy. Socrates speaks to Agathon and Aristophanes about the importance of mastering the skills of comedy and tragedy. The speeches reflect on the nature of the tragedy/comedy and the order of love. Alcibiades’ speech resulted in Socrates as Eros and their characteristics being the same.
Alcibiades’ speech played a fundamental role in the Symposium because it was different from the other five speeches given. It serves as a spiritual copy completing Socrates’ speech because he compares Socrates as Eros since they share the same features. It seems that Alcibiades portrays Eros in a way it’s easier for readers to grasp and understand. It seems that people would reject the idea of love if it does not involve sex but rather a philosophical touch to it.
