Apple on Wednesday debuted its newest smartphones, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, giving the devices a new pressure-sensitive display, zippier processor and more powerful camera. "What we have to show you today is really awesome," CEO Tim Cook said during Apple 's presentation at the Bill Graham Auditorium in downtown San Francisco. "While they may look familiar, we have changed everything about these new iPhones." This year 's iPhone is Apple 's off "S" year. That means Apple keeps the basic design of the device the same but adds other features to attract buyers, like the Siri digital voice assistant in the iPhone 4S and the TouchID fingerprint reader in the iPhone 5S. The iPhone has become more vital than ever to the company 's financial results following the introduction of Apple 's bigger-screen smartphones a year ago. It has made up more than two-thirds of sales in the past several quarters since Apple released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in September 2014. Typically, the iPhone accounts for closer to 50 percent of Apple 's revenue. That means keeping customers interested in the iPhone is critical for Apple to remain a major tech leader. A marquee feature for this year 's iPhone 6S was expected to be the Force Touch technology used in the Apple Watch, a pressure-sensitive display that responds to various types of touches. The company instead unveiled 3D Touch, a feature that appears to have the same capabilities. For instance, it will enable a user to peek in an email by pressing down on the subject head. "As much as the new products are important, the price of the older products is important." However, worries have emerged that demand could be slowing down for Apple 's biggest moneymaker. The smartphone market overall isn 't growing as fast it once did. Shipments worldwide should rise only about 10 percent this year, according to IDC, well below the 28 percent increase in 2014, with China shouldering much of the responsibility for that slowdown. The smartphone market there has been maturing, and the country 's stock market has been in turmoil amid concerns about an economic slowdown. Cook, in a rare move, last month emailed CNBC host Jim Cramer to say that despite concerns in the Chinese stock market, Apple has "continued to experience strong growth for our business in China through July and August." Some experts in smartphones said iPhone are being less and less creative on designing the new phones, and no special features either. It have blamed on Steve Jobs passed away. If Apple need to keep its market leadership, it must have some change on both the hardware and software. First, there should be some breakthrough on their devices, the outlook of iPhone should imitate the market flow. For example, the screen of the iPhone should be bigger (even now iPhone 6/6s have bigger screen) and be ‘headphone-friendly’, other brand’s headphone can never be used on the iPhone, this is feature should be improve to let the customers feel new iPhone are much user-friendly than before to increase the sales and to keep its market share in a high
This iPhone was thinner and lighter than ever before and was revealed on September 12th, 2012 (Savov, 2012). Everyone was a little weary because this was also the first iPhone to be completely supervised by Tim Cook. But Apple did not disappoint. With a bigger screen, LTE technology, iOS 6 software, and a new 8MP camera, there were over 2 million preorders within the first 24 hours (Savov, 2012). This was the first time in phone history where the demand exceed the supply that was available. There was only one big problem that a lot of people did not like right away. This was that Apple changed the charging port from a 30 pin connecter to the new lightening cable (Savov, 2012). It was the first change of the uniformity of the iPhone. This generation was also the most expensive and Apple was worried that the price could potentially deter people from buying their products in the future. This is where they got the idea for the iPhone 5C and 5S, the next upgrade. These phones were released on September 20th, 2013, and had a wide target due to the low cost of the 5C and the lavish upgrades of the 5S (Brewer, 2013). The iPhone 5C did lack some of the things that made the 5 special like not having Touch ID, using the A6 chip instead of the A7, and not having the slow motion recording option that the 5S does but both came with iOS 7 and most of its internal hardware was the same (Brewer, 2013). Both models sold over 9 million phones within the first three days of being released (iPhone 5C, 2013). Although a cheaper option, the 5C was not as a big success as the 5S, as Apple had overstocked the 5c and had a hard time selling them all. This is when Apple had to take a completely different approach with the future generations of the
When it comes to smart phone market share in the United States, Apple still trails Android by almost 10%. But if you are to break out the market share figures then you will notice that IPhone reigns supreme by a very wide margin. According to a lot of recent data compiled by ComScore, Phone’s share of the United States smartphone market now is about 43.6%, followed by Samsung which is at 27.6%. Apples market has increased by 4% almost every year, while Samsung has been dropping by 4% almost every year. Although Apple is doing a bit better than Samsung overall, Samsung is still topping Apple with their Android. During the second quarter of 2015 Samsung took a 21.7 percent of the global smartphone market, with shipments 73.2 million units. A reason I feel Samsung is doing much greater then apple right now is their ability to have all these different features, which not only add modern things to their phone but also longevity. With the three new water proof phones that Samsung has come out with Apple has yet to release their first
The excited Chief executive Tim Cook even commended China and its Apple stores for its great sales of iphones within a short period of time. He said the bulk of their sales were going to middle class in China and they would continue to invest in
With Apple continuously innovating they have improved the battery life, increased the memory capacity, or a better colour options. With each change they have considered the value and to what it will mean to the customer and how will that meet their needs.
The iPhone is easily better than any Android design because of the sleek and sharp design and a colorful display that attracts the widest range of consumers with interest and awe. The phone’s design has been greatly thought out and is well built for anyone. Brooke Crothers, a writer for Cnet.com, explains the simple yet artistic build of the phone, “Thinness, in my book, is the foundation for coolness. But thinness isn't just an aesthetic bonus; it can be practical too. In this case, Apple stretched out the 4S just enough to allow for a bigger screen, while making it lighter and easi...
As the consumption of iPhones grows, so does the impact it inflicts. To begin to understand how this device has impacted our society, one must analyze the aesthetics. According to Goggin (2009), two principles that separate the iPhone from mobile phones are “design and customization” (p. 232). The design of an iPhone is very clean and simple, which is beneficial for any type of user to operate, especially those who struggle with new technology. Better yet, the technology is always improving. The iPhone’s operating system, known as iOS, is constantly refining and polishing its design and features. Due to this, iPhones are becoming more resourceful, user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing. On the customization side, being able to control more of what your mobile device does is a very convincing feature that makes the iPhone stand out. The iPhone gives users an abundance of options to cater their device to their perso...
These products, built upon incredible foresight and attention to detail, carried tremendous customer loyalty and high margins. Apple management must bridge the perceived innovation gap with some sort of product breakthrough. Otherwise, it is reasonable for the company to accept lower Street expectations built upon the premise that while the company remains an exceptional production, distribution and branded business, the days of unparalleled enterprising innovation and leadership may be ebbing. The best things to do, by Cook, would be to have a VP that replace the innovation brought by Jobs and be in charge only on innovation.
With all the hype surrounding the iPod post its introduction into the electronics market, it should be of no surprise that iPod’s unmatched demand for such distinct music management tool would lead Apple to add iPod’s features to the most sold electronic device to date: the cell phone. Thus, you get a hybrid called the iPhone. This highly anticipated electronic trend setter without fault had numbers of people waiting in line at the Apple store in New York; iPod fans want to be among the first to explore some of the most innovative phone features to date. Among those features you will find a 3.5 inch touch screen (the largest of all smart phones), Wi-Fi connectivity, the most usage time of all smart phones, i.e. talk time, internet use, or video playback, and many more impressive characteristics. The iPhone has, thereby, revolutionized the cell phone industry to become a potential best designed and most admired phone of the decade.
Apple Inc. was established by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak on April 1, 1976 as a computer designer, developer and seller company. However, the company shifted its focus from only personal computer to include other consumer electronics such as portable media player and mobile phone in 2007. Apple Inc becomes one of the most popular makers in its field since it seems that its popularity has increased according to a report on www.statista.com that Apple Inc’s products sales was generally increasing throughout the first quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2014. On the one hand, it has increased its revenue from about 14 billion US dollars to more than 170 billion US dollars in 2013. All in all, the company is highly successful corresponding to its products’ development and their sales growth in world’s market.
According to Forbes.com Apple recorded US$18 billion in profit from this quarter’s sales of US$74.6 billion. A major chunk of this profit came from Apple iphone sales from international markets. It sold 74.5 million iphones and saw a 70% rise in China sales. But how sustainable this growth would be is a question that looms large in front of tech giant like Apple. Though it has tried to innovate its products according to the changing generations but how far can it keep on doing the same. We will further analyze the Smartphone industry by applying porter’s five forces.
The very first iPhone was announced by the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, in 2007. His vision was to reinvent the phone. iPhones have revolutionized smartphones and have shaped the cell phone industry into what it is today. On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs put together an incredible keynote presentation. He stated that he would be “introducing a wide-screen ipod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough Internet device” (Ritchie, 2015). The audience assumed that this meant that Mr. Jobs would be launching three separate devices. However, it was only one device, the iPhone. Within the past 7 years, Apple has been able to tweak its iPhones by incorporating major redesigns. These redesigns use combinations
