One of the Native American tribes, that was, and still is located in the Great Plains, is the Ioway people. They are a very unique nation of Indians, though they did share many features with other Indian nations. They had to move once because they were put on a reservation in the 1800’s and currently live around Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Back then, the Ioways spoke the native language called the Chiwere Language. They currently speak English. The Ioway Indians call themselves the Baxoje. The Ioway Indians were originally from the Great Lake area, then migrated to the Great Plain area in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota to hunt buffalo. They lived in settled villages. Their houses were made with wooden frames and covered with packed dirt and leaves. They were called round earthen lodges. The Ioways did use Tepees but only for shelter when they went on long hunting trips for buffalo. The climate was hot in the summer and cold in the winter. They hunted for buffalo occasionally, deer, elk, beavers, and other small game. The Ioways also fished in streams and rivers. They also planted crops such as corn, beans, squash, and pumpkins. On their feet they wore moccasins. The men did not wear war bonnets but instead wore turban otter fur hats with a few feathers. The warriors would shave their heads and leave a long lock of hair called a scalplock in the back of their head. Only the Ioway chief could wear eagle feathers on his head dress. Woman wore their hair in a braids or long and loose. They would make necklaces with shell, beads and bear claws. The Ioways, like other Indians, believed and worshipped the spirits of nature.
