The information processing theory explains that the material that we come across travels from sensory storage to working memory and lastly to long term memory (Snowman & McCown, 2015) The long term memory is a permanent storehouse of knowledge, so once the material has reached that region, students can then easily recall and retrieve the familiar information (Snowman & McCown, 2015). This concept is different from the operant condition theory in several ways. For example, operant condition theory is more of a behavioral learning method that’s focused on rewards from the environment and constant reinforcement to help strengthen positive behavior (Snowman & McCown, 2015).
If I were to explain the differences to a parent I would explain that operant conditioning is typically a type of learning where behavior is controlled by consequences (Miller, 2011). Then I will further explain that

For example, when students are just learning about an unfamiliar topic, they need to develop strategies that will help convert the information into something they can easily store and accurately refer to and access whenever they want (Miller, 2011). Since students have different ways of accomplishing these tasks, each strategy will be unique. How each student stores information is also related to their age, for example, common strategy used by 7 years olds are mnemonics, which is when they repeat information taught to them that helps improve their memory. Operant conditioning is changing behavior through the use of reinforcement after the desired action is given; a behavior that is rewarded positively is more likely to continue and a behavior that is rewarded negatively would likely stop occurring (Santrock,2014). In addition to reinforcement, Skinner also talks about punishment. Reinforcement increases the probability an action or behavior will be repeated, while punishment is intended to decrease a behavior (McLeod, 2015). When Laurie was younger, she thought she was being sent to school every day to socialize with her friends and that learning was a secondary, unintentional happenstance. In third grade, compared to the other students in her class, she was falling short in reading and math.
Operant conditioning is a kind of conditioning, which examines how often a behavior will or occur depending on the effects of the behavior (King, 2016, pg. ). The words positive and negative are used to apply more significance to the words reinforcement or punishment. Positive is adding to the stimulus, while negative is removing from the stimulus (King, 2016). For instance, with positive reinforcement, there is the addition of a factor to increase the number of times that the behavior occurs (King, 2016). An example of positive reinforcement is when a child is given an allowance for completing their household chores. And contingency is “refers to the degree of correlation between a behavior and its consequences” (Chance, 2014). Last is contiguity “refers to the gap in time between a behavior and its reinforcing consequences” (Chance, 2014). And the reason why contiguity has a faster result in learning is because “one reason that immediate consequences produce better results is that a delay allows time for other behavior to occur. This behavior, and not the contingent behavior, is reinforced” (Chance, 2014). “Dopamine is a neurotransmitter. It is a chemical messenger that helps in the transmission of signals in the brain and other vital areas. Dopamine is found in humans as well as animals, including both vertebrates and invertebrates” (2013, Mandal).
The first systematic study regarding operant conditioning was taken place in the 1800’s by the Psychologist, Thorndike. Thorndike formally defined operant conditioning as a type of learning that is controlled by the consequences of an organism’s behavior. However according to lecture, operant conditioning can be simply thought as performing an action in order to receive a reward. An Outline of Findings and Conclusions of Research into the Capacity of Short-Term Memory Jacobs lead the first organised study of the capacity of short-term memory in 1887 by creating a technique called the "memory span". Jacobs discovered the average short-term memory span to be between five and nine items. This became known as the "magic number 7 plus or minus 2". Operant conditioning is a system of learning that transpires through punishment and rewards for behaviors (Kalat, 2011). Through this, a connection linking a behavior and a consequence is made. For instance a kid could be told that she will not get recess privileges if she talks in class. This possibility of being punished leads to decrease in disruptive behaviors from her. There are many differences and similarities between each of these learning processes. For example, classical conditioning involves only involuntary or reflex responses where as operant conditioning involves both involuntary and voluntary reflexes. These different learning processes can be used independently in many different situations. Where Classical conditioning may be more effective in one situation it may be useless in another. For this reason each of these learning processes, Classical and operant conditioning, and observational and insight learning are each as important and effective as the other.
