Edgar Allan Poe is mostly known widely for his short stories. However, Poe also mastered the art of poetry during his time. Poe has left a lasting influence on all of literature. Many do not know that Poe’s first love was poetry. Starting during his childhood years, Poe was influenced by English romantics. He carried some of their traits on to his personal writings. Just like his life, Poe’s works are covered in mystery. His works are covered in a Gothic theme. Most of Poe’s poems follow the same central idea: a young man who has lost the love of his life. The poems in the collection I have chosen are similar in many ways. A strength that Poe demonstrated through all his works is his power of theme. Although, this poem has a different central theme as his others it follows the same technical format. The theme of “Alone” is about a young boy who is not able to fit in, and the tone is loneliness. The poem has 22 lines that are embedded with beautiful imagery and metaphors. The line, “ Then in my childhood in the dawn Of the most stormy life was drawn From ev’ry depth of good and ill.” is a true example of how Poe crafted his metaphors to mirror his actually life. This metaphor also places an image in ones mind of the rocky childhood Poe had. Another famous poem by Poe entitled “A Dream Within A Dream” is flooded with impeccable imagery and metaphors. The poem is 2 stanzas long with 24 lines in total. This poem is about a man who is questioning his reality. It follows the gothic tone that Poe is so widely known for. Poe uses a different type of literary tool for this poem: repetition. The line “a dream within a dream” is repeated several times throughout the poem.
