Andrew Batten, the executive director of Frances Tavern in New York, explains that “Everything about being a spy went against the code of the gentleman,” speaking about espionage in the late 18th century. In this period, espionage was seen by most as a disgraceful profession. This is why although the Continental Army needed spies to help them win the Revolutionary War, so many people refused to do the job because they feared becoming someone who dedicated their lives to lies and deception. However, american history is full of brave, forward thinking men and women who dedicated their lives to taking risks in order to create a better life for themselves and for future generations. Among these courageous souls are the founders and members of the elusive Culper Spy Ring. This ring of spies and informants operated during the American …show more content…
However, there were many dedicated men and women who helped make their mission possible. The gang was lead by Major Benjamin Tallmadge of the Continental Army, who was ordered by Washington to organize a new spy network in New York City. They were also assisted by Caleb Brewster, a sailor, Austin Roe, a tavern owner, and Anna Strong, a citizen of Setauket, Long Island. These people all came together with a common goal: to win America’s Independence. Through the American Revolution, the rebels had made many attempts to organize a system to obtain and share secret enemy intelligence through the Continental Army. However, the Culper Ring stands out against the rest of the spy ring attempts. This is because it was by far the most effective and long lasting intelligence operation during the Revolutionary War, and through it the Continental Army obtained enough sensitive information about the British to have a fighting chance in the

The American Revolution was a time when colonial peoples were forced to develop a Patriot identity separate from that of the British. The evolution of espionage provides a paradigm case to support the shift in identity. The role of espionage is really only seen through the eyes of the British and the Patriots, the loyalists in the colonies are absent from the narrative. This paper argues that the use of espionage during the American revolution and the consequences that it brought developed a distinct American identity by analyzing the societal benefit it played in the colonies (the motivation that drove American’s to spy), the exclusion of members with loyalist sympathies found by John Honeyman and Enoch Crosby and its reputation within the colonial side.
In times of great terror and panic, the citizens of a nation must decide what they value most: their right to privacy or the lives of the innocent. Government surveillance is criticized, however there are times in a nation’s history where, in order to ensure the safety of their citizens, they must surveill the country for potential hazards that might exist in the world. The government-issued program, COINTELPRO--a series of illegal projects during the twentieth century organized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation--while heavily criticized for its unconstitutional grounds--was justified because it benefitted the nation during a period of upheaval. COINTELPRO is popularly condemned by historians and professors such as Brandeis University Professor of Sociology, David Cunningham, who asserts that the FBI counterintelligence program was only a form of repression that allowed for the government to suppress matters that they consider bothersome (234) This however was not the case. COINTELPRO was necessary because of the great social unrest, individuals posed threats to society, and creating operations that were beneficial to the United States.
The time period following World War I was booming with activity due to the post-war economy. Wall Street was buzzing with promising business and many of the heads of major stock firms were involved in “under-the-table-investments”. The federal income tax system had also just been initiated in the country and wealthy families such as the Rockefellers were protecting their enormous fortunes through loopholes in the 21st Amendment. The alcohol market was shut down because of prohibition, but then opened up a whole new form of market (the black market) where it was sold in secrecy instead. The most iniquitous of all the criminal activity, however, were the gangs. These influential groups controlled black market trade and commerce and head members collected some of the highest salaries in the entire

‘The American mafia is often portrayed as the invisible and omnipotent criminal of the movie melodrama" ( Cummings and Volkman 4). "It is neither of them, but the American mafia is one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the world" ( Cummings and Volkman 4). When the American mafia first started people did not pay much attention to the criminal acts that they did and the unholy morals that they stood for. That was until a man from Chicago by the name of Al Capone took the mafia from rags to riches from the late nineteen twenties well into the nineteen thirties. Thanks to Mr. Capone, the American mafia was well known, and became a great force to be dealt with in the world. Mr, Capone also made men of the mafia among the most socially mobile people in America.
During 1869-2014 the Sicilian mafia in America evolved in a number of ways such as: the change in rules, leaders, how it is run, the change in code and power over American society. These topics will be covered throughout this essay and will give you a detailed explanation furthermore the history of the evolution that took place. The Sicilian Mafia started in poor Sicilian ghettos in America and spread into the cities striking fear into the American society. The Sicilian mafia is more commonly known as La Cosa Nostra.
The well-known Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was formed in the U.S in 1935. The FBI formed when the Bureau of Prohibition and the Bureau of Investigation combined to form one job. Since 1935, the FBI 's mission has been to investigate crimes that involve a violation of the federal law and to find justice in these crimes. The FBI was extremely active during the Gangster Era and had a wide spectrum of who was committing federal crimes. Criminals such as the infamous John Dillinger, who was the first Public Enemy Number 1 and was on the FBI 's most wanted list. In attempts to put an end to the surplus of organized crime involving the gangsters of the era, the FBI implemented various plans. One of those plans was positioning agents in
Organized crime has always been occupied with a negative label. Perhaps this is due to the constantly changing environment in America as well as the social state of its homeland, Europe. Our society is convinced that the so-called Mafia is a family of pure criminals, pimps, and murderers. Whatever the opinion, there is no doubt that the Mafia played a big part in the history of America and the way Americans view crime today. "The origins of the secret society known as the Mafia are believed to be as old as the 9th century" (Mafia History). During the 9th century, the Mafia's main purpose was to strengthen themselves against enemies, which invaded their homeland in Sicily. It was supposed to create a strong feeling of togetherness between all Sicilians. "This idea of family was carried through in the structure of the organization, which had a strong hierarchical layout" (Mafia History). The Mafia is said by many to have perhaps the best system of power, than any other group or government known today. One can compare a physical representation of the family almost to a family tree dated all the way back through many generations. Certain people operated the system, but without the help of the people with the less power, the Mafia would be very weak. To put it another way, a leader cannot lead without followers, and the followers cannot follow without leaders. This is why the Mafia was hard to overcome. Although when many think of the location of the Mafia, Chicago and New York often come to mind, but actually the Mafia has been traced back through 26 major cites in America. Within every city were many Mafia families each with it?s own government. "At the head of each family stood the Dons or Bosses. Next in line to the Dons was the Underbosses, who were second in command. Followed by the Consigliere or counselors. And last were the men who did the dirty work for the Mob, the Soldiers. The Soldiers were the one?s who would enforce discipline over both members and non-members through the use of intimidation, assaults, and murder" (Living Large 3). All the members of the society were expected to go through a ceremony that often was compared to the baptism ceremony. "The induction ceremony is the most important day of a mobster?s life, the day that they become full members of La Cosa Nostra" (Mafia Life). "The ceremony for the newcomers was som...

Organized crime in the United States keeps the FBI and other law enforcement agencies in a never-ending investigation of criminals suspected of the infiltration of legitimate businesses. A notorious twentieth century organized group was the New England Patriarca Mafia, or N.E.P.M.. Originating in 1915, the N.E.P.M. evolved over the early twentieth century decades, until 1954 when Raymond Loredo Salvatore Patriarca was donned as boss* and promptly began to expand its power. Due to mafia-related language that will be present throughout the paper, a page of definitions is supplied at the end of the paper. Defined words throughout the paper will be noted with an asterisk, “ * ”.
