The 1980s was a busy and action packed decade. Dance music records were made using only electronic instruments became increasingly popular. The 1980s fashion trends were certainly a foundation for the fashion in the 21st century. The art of the 1980s can now be seen in retrospect as a powerful synthesis of the personal and political, as well as an implicit rebuke to the hollow conformity and historical amnesia that characterized the Reagan era. There were many events that happened in the 1980s, however, sports were huge events in the 1980s. Sports in the 1980s had boycotts, relief, and rising stars.
The United States boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, Russia was a big political event. In December of 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan so President Carter said that the United States were not going to send athletes to Russia (Teitelbaum . Due to the revenge of the Soviet Union, the U.S. won by far the most medals. The boycott of the U.S. led to the Soviet Union dominating the Olympics, as was expected in 1980. The 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea was boycott free, and all the countries participated. Both of these protests were a huge political event that affected the Olympics. Although many events happened, sports were a massive event that took place in the 1980s. The U.S. boycott during the 1980 Summer Olympic Games, due to the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, was a huge political protest. To get revenge, the Soviet Union also did a boycott in 1984. As televison began to fill American homes, neighbors flocked to each others house to watch different events. Even neighbors who loved different sides crowded around the television to watch the event. Whether it was baseball, wrestling, golf, roller derby, or another sport, television allowed the community to grow closer. It is estimated that one sporting event drew an audience of 150,000 viewers. This is remarkable considering there was only about 5,000 television sets in American homes. That is about 30 people per set! Sports and television did more than just bring the community closer together. Sports on television became so popular that merchandising became a booming business. Whether at a game or sitting in the living room, authentic merchandise was a must for any fan. Much like the merchandise in Karal Ann Marlings book As Seen On TV, the merchandising industry exploited the people.
