Children and teenagers spend an alarming amount of time using devices such as cell phones, laptops, and iPads; therefore, this paper focuses on the many different ways children and teens are using these devices. What really goes on behind the screen and should parents be more concerned? What is the different outcomes of the use of these devices and social media? There are different ways parents can be more involved and protect their children. Children who are cyberbullied are more likely to have lower self-esteem, receive poor grades, have more health problems, skip school, and use alcohol and drugs. Seventy-two percent of teens that frequently use the internet say they have been the victim of cyberbullying at least once during the last year. Out of that seventy-two percent of teens, only ten percent of them tell their parents about the incident. It is extremely alarming to me that these incidents are current and parents are unaware. Children and teens have become the victims of insults and name-calling and it is ruining their self-esteem and self-worth. Whether they are on Facebook checking statuses of their friends and peers, or they are being bullied and harassed while online, it is time for parents to be more …show more content…
Facebook remains one of the most used sites among American teens. Social media is easily accessible to anyone and everyone. Social media has advanced immensely in the last decade. Technology has advanced so quickly that parents cannot keep up with new content. For example, there was a site called Myspace that was very popular and now Facebook has taken over. The constant changing of these sites can make it hard for adults to stay up to date and current with sites their children visit. Parents and children need to be cautious when it comes to social media and the use of devices. Sites can be fun if they are used safely; however, they can also quickly become a
Technology has spread like a virus throughout the world. Almost everyone has access to technology. Technology, though it is a blessing has it’s dangers. Harlan Coben writes of parental monitoring. He is in great favor of parents putting spyware on their children’s devices to have access to all the devices information, in and outgoing message, and so forth. The article titled, The Undercover Parent, informs parents of the dangers of the internet and that monitoring is necessary. I agree with Coben, parents should monitor their kids internet use, be it on a phone, computer, and gaming consoles. Many teens do not know of the internet’s dangers that are lurking around corners ready to ensnare them.
To keep in-touch with the real world, many teens use smartphones such as the IPhone and Android, which are devices that allow teens to access social media, internet content, and a plethora of general information. It has become a harrowing topic of discussion recently. As more teenagers use smartphones in school and at home, questions and concerns are surfacing. Some parents do not know the true effect of smartphones on their children. Do smartphones actually hinder teen development? How can we ultimately protect our children if it does?
Cyberbullying is becoming a major issue that is causing lots of problems in today’s society. Joseph Wright, a pediatrician at Children’s National Health System in Washington, D.C. says that: “By the third grade, 75% of kids have been exposed to bullying, the majority as bystanders” (USA Today, 1).The parents should keep in constant contact with their children so that they would know when something isn’t quite right with their children. Did you know that only 1 in 10 teens tell their parents if they have been a cyberbully victim...
From the perspective of adolescents and teenagers growing up in such a hyper-connected world, having a smartphone just seems like a necessity, something that all parents feel obliged to giving to their child at a young age, should they have to contact them in case of emergency. But when can an item such as a smartphone turn into a device that sucks away confidence, self pride and the overall well-being of a child? A device that is making a child fear when it should be used in order to help them feel safe. This is what can happen when you introduce social media to children who do understand how to fully use it safely; who don’t understand the implications and consequences that come with silly mistakes made through social media but also don’t
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are only a few of the most common words used in today’s language among children, teens and adults. Such words can be described as popular terms related to what many of us know as social media. In today’s culture, many teenagers rely so heavily on the usage of social media that issues once thought to be revolutionary are now taking place offline and online. In fact, several cases of mental addictions, depression and even suicide have all stemmed from the initial usage of sites such as Facebook, which are otherwise socially accepted as a simple means of communicating with “friends.” While social media does have its advantages, it can also be held responsible for several negative events in the lives of today’s teenagers.
Recent advancements in technology have created a new form of communication. We call this new type of communication social media. Some of the big names in social media are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. Most people today use some form of social media on a daily basis. Social media is most popular amongst adolescents. According to a poll conducted by Infographic, nine out of ten teenagers have used social media. Whenever a new technological advancement occurs there is concern over how it will affect society. In the case of social media, the concern is greatest for adolescents. So, how does social media effect adolescents? Social media can have both negative and positive effects. Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
It’s easier for the adolescents to bully someone over online, than in person. 71% of the teens say that offensive words like “slut” or “retard” or more likely to be tweeted or messaged online than said in person, (Atlantic wire, par. 1). According to Cyber bullying statistics from the i-SAFE foundation, “Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyberbullying.” In some cases, the youth’s who are the victims, catch on to the trend and become a bully to someone else. The youth, are bullying the kids until they break down. Cyberbullying victims are more than likely to have low self-esteem, and consider suicide more than any other youth. In fact, 20% of kids cyberbullied think about suicide, and 1 in 10 attempts it. (Laird, sec. 8). Social Media sites are being a lead cause to children killing
Since the time we have adopted internet and other media into our daily lives, there are so many debates and commentaries on the impacts of these new media on the social relations and activities of the young generations. There have been countless controversies whether the advancement in technology is proving to be a boon or bane for the society, especially for the young generations. In the past, the rapid growth of Television has also aroused so many questions, as well as discussions relating to the social and cultural effects. After a long research, different viewpoints of people from different parts of the world were collected out of which some were against the advancement of technologies and some were supporting the fact that technology is becoming the backbone of each and every work in our daily lives.(Mesch 2009)
In today’s society, much advancement has been made throughout the universe. However, one that seems to stand out in particular is the use of social media. Social media has both positive and negative effects on society. This advancement has led to a difference in communication to everyone by reconnecting with others, or even informing the public nationwide through televisions such as the news or talk shows. However, is social media safe to use? Social media has a great impact on everyone in society. While allowing your children or teenagers to engage in social media a few things to consider are the risks of youth using social media, what age is too young, and also how social media is useful in some cases. Children participate in cyber bullying now and even find themselves involved in bad habits, such as sexting (Schurgin O’Keefe). According to a recent poll conducted, over 22 percent of teenagers log onto their social media site more than ten times a day (Schurgin O’Keefe). Not everything is negative towards social media, but there are precautions that need to be taken when there is the youth involved.
Cyber bullying has become an epidemic among today’s youth and a rising concern across the globe. Cyberbullying is the role of electronic communication that depicts discriminating, manipulative, hateful, or embarrassing information in regards to another human being. The design is to intimate, demean, control, or humiliate the victim. With the massive use of electronic function in today’s age, it has dramatically increased the number of victims, spectators and even its perpetrators. Pamela Engel states, “American school systems estimate that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students” and “Six out of 10 teenagers say they witness bullying in school at least once a day”. PACER’s National Bullying
Adults are easily accessible to the goods and bads on social media, compared to children that are less capable to realize what is convenient for them. As a result, children have become victims of cyberbullying via social media. One of the major problem of cyberbullying had to do with the fact that “[t]he Internet provides more than ample opportunities for children to bully one another anonymously. Kids can embark on impressive and terrifying bullying campaigns, drawing in dozens of other completely anonymous children. Even a child who never does anything risky online is at risk of being bullied”, (Woda,2015, p.32). Children are expose to more cyberbullying in social media than in their normal everyday lives. According to Woda Tim, (2015) “a 2013 Pew Research Center study, indicates that 20.8 percent of kids ages eight to ten report that they have been cyberbullied at least once in their life, while 88 percent of social media-using teens say they have witnessed someone being mean or cruel on a social media site”, (32). Parents should focus more when their kids are using phones or computers in the house and it should use in public areas of the house, where parents can be aware of what their kids are doing in social media. They must use a “Parental intelligence” with their children and know that kids are the more vulnerable to be involved in cyberbullying. It is painful to see how everyday in the news kids are committing
According to Jaana Juvonene, between 50 percent and 70 percent of the teenagers between 12 and 17 years of age have experienced bullying and threats on the Internet. According to another study, only 10% of those who have suffered bullying informed an adult about the experiences (Juvonene). The percentage of those teenagers who actually told an adult is a very scary number in a world filled with violence and hate. Parents who monitor their teenagers’ internet usage have a much better chance of being aware of these occurrences and have the opportunity to advise and assist the teenagers in decisions on how to handle the situation both physically and
The speedy development of social media has touched on the lives of adolescents and youngsters. It has transformed kids’ lives in schools and at home. Engaging in several kinds of social media websites is becoming a daily procedure that has benefited children and adolescents. This natural process has enhanced communication skills, social connectedness, and developed technical skills. The internet may actually be altering how people think about themselves and others by the negative things that media portrays as positive. A vast portion of this generation’s emotional and social development is an influence from daily use of the internet and their digital devices. This can truly strike a child’s emotional and mental organism. Kids and adolescents are at some risk as they navigate and experiment with social media. A heavy function of hypertext and multimedia content can cause limited attention span, lower comprehension, poor centering, and dejected. Social media have impressed how people remember, study habits, and feelings toward others. The negative role of social media websites has also caused off-line behavior such as bullying, clique-forming, and sexual experimentation. Daily social media usage can be problematic for teens are still developing self-regulation skills and are susceptible to peer-pressure. There are many disadvantages, but also some advantages in employing social media. Social media sites enable creative expression and offer the opportunity to discuss school assignments. Social media is described as content created and shared by individuals on the web using freely available websites that allow users to create and post their own images, video and text information and then share that with either the entire internet or just a select group of friends (Affilorama, 2012). They are more like a website allowing you to express your daily activities, beliefs, locations, likes, dislikes, photos, music, etc. They are used by creating a profile, and logging in through either the website, or apps now used on smartphones, or any portable device with Wi-Fi connection. Although most social media networks are directed towards adults and young adults, young children are getting into these websites as well. There are usually age limits but there isn’t a certainty that all the users provided their actual age, allowing whoever wants to be a member of these sites to bypass an age limit “security” procedure. Facebook and MySpace require users to be at least 13, but they have no practical way to verify ages, and many young users prete...
Why is it that children tend to be entertained by social media? All around us today we see that children are living their lives behind bright screens. This is very tragic to see within our generation, because children should be living and enjoying their lives.
