Clive Thompson is a journalist, blogger and writer. He mainly focuses his writing on science and technology but this one chapter from his book Smarter than you think, “Public thinking,” has put a spin on writing and technology. Multiple times he talks about writing in many different forms. For example, he speaks of writing on blogs, on internet short stories (or fan fiction novels), in schools, in studies, and even on a regular basis. Thomson is trying to explain to his readers how writing, and the sharing of information across the internet, is beneficial to our society and ones well-being. In my readings of Thompson’s excerpt, I will examine Thomson’s examples and show how they are relevant and that it is beneficial.
On a daily basis, people read to increased their vocabulary, improve writing skills and keep updated with daily news. However, we waste
Literature has long been an important part of human life. We express our feelings with ink and paper; we spill out our souls on dried wood pulp. Writing has been a form of release and enjoyment since the beginning of written language. You can tell a story, make yourself a hero. You can live out all your fantasies!
“Human beings have always told their histories and truths through parable and fable. We are inveterate storytellers,” says filmmaker Beeban Kidron (2012). We, as humans, share our experiences through stories. Young children make up stories to amuse themselves and their parents. Somewhere along the line of traditional schooling, however, storytelling starts to lose its magic for some students. These students, who struggle with the traditional organization and independence of traditional schooling, struggle to write the creative stories they once told as little children.
Some of the most well known authors have been the creators of short stories. In only a few pages these authors provide the reader with a look into life's most passionate experiences; love, loss, death, and sacrifice. Throughout time their words have touched hearts and inspired many. Characters are remembered not merely as a fictional person in a story but are brought to life in the reader's mind, soul, and memory. These stories have survived the test of time and boundaries because of their connection to real life and the readers who share it with them.
Stories are a big part of the human race. From conceptualizing the birth of our race to nagging our parents to tell bedtime stories, our life is nothing but a series of stories. It is in human nature to narrate significant incidents of our lives to others. Storytelling as a method has been progressively used by various companies as a tool to connect with their employees and customers. It helps to build a bridge of loyalty, longevity, mutual trust and understanding and connection. Storytelling helps to get that instant personal connect. Stories are significant because they are inherent to human experience. By stories we pass on our accumulated wisdom, beliefs and values to the future generations.
“The importance of reading to children is their ability to grasp abstract concepts, apply logic in various scenarios recognize cause and effect, and utilize judgement.” (Stan, n.d.) Reading helps with concentration and discipline. Which not only helps them in school but allows them to make better choices in everyday situations. Pie Corbett did his own research and discovered that “children were at risk of being left behind at school and failing to develop the creative talents needed to lead happy and productive lives.” If parents were told this, they might make better parental
Writing is an incredible characteristic in every culture. Anybody can express their feelings through writing, and can learn by visually seeing words on a page. The power of writing is amazing. My area of study is elementary education in the 4th grade setting, and I will be focusing on writing. There are many “best practices,” in the 4th grade setting and Santrock talks about many of them, but the one that stands out the most is free-write. Along with free-write another set of authors, Darch and Simpson, created a program for spelling tests.
Fandom is a term that refers to a subculture that consists of fans who share a feeling of camaraderie with other fans who share a common interest. Those that consider themselves to be part of a fandom are typically interested in even minor details of those interests, spend a large amount of their time on their interest and are usually members of social media sites that allow them to discuss this interest in detail. This is what differentiates them from those who only show a casual interest.
Tip# 4: Sleep. No, not in class; that’s a one-way street to Failuretown. Sleep is an indispensable tool in the creation of good study habits. A good sleep schedule is an excellent way to stay on top of things as it provides you with clear times of when you will be available to do what. A bad sleep schedule will leave you tired in school and sleeping at times when you should be studying or doing something beneficial. Maintain a good sleep schedule because it is hard to get out of a bad
Two days a week in the morning, the children participate in a reading and writing block called “literacy and writing workshop.” The classroom is organized into five different levels with one group having one extra person; the levels are based on scoring of reading assessments. The groups are rotated so that each may spend 15 minutes cycles with either the teacher or Para-educator. The groups not with an instructor were to work on the “Daily-5” (explanation later) until their scheduled lesson. After the students finish their lesson, they are to fill the remainder of the workshop time working on “Daily-5.” This workshop is part of a regular routine. The students understand that after a reading a story with the teacher, they are verbally given a writing assignment. The assignment is usually to write a five sentence paragraph and color a picture related to the reading.
Reading – we do it every day. In almost every aspect of our lives and often take it for granted. Reading is essential for human communication and increasing knowledge. However, because reading is so important even a small change can have a significantly large impact on our modern society. We are currently in a midst of a cultural revolution. In which the printed word is being transformed by the digital.
Nowadays, many people think reading is not necessary, since there are so many sources of information and types of entertainment, such as TV, cinema and the Internet. I believe they are wrong because reading is very beneficial in many ways.
The traditional education environment is starting to implement new ways to teach students with the rapid development of technology. One strategy is the use of the internet to communicate, listen, and share ideas among students and professors alike; specifically the use of the internet realm in wikis, blogs, and podcasts. Blogs are either a website in itself or a part of a website where something like an interactive journal is being used; a person can write about anything they wish, link or show images, and decide whether other people can comment on the blog entry. Wikis are websites or webpages dedicated to providing information about a topic and can be edited by either the members of that site. Podcasts are digital files in the form of audio, video, or both that can be downloaded online onto computers, MP3 players, certain phones, and many more devices. Wikis, blogs, and podcasts could positively alter the educational format of lectures for students.
