The Importance of Communication
I believe that one of my strengths lie in the way I communicate and deal with children. I think that we must become active listeners in order to understand each other. During my internship with the Instititute for Social Justice, I worked with inmates on research for alternative social models of punishment. In order to do the job effectively, I needed to empathize with the inmates so that I could understand their concerns and needs and remedy any self-destructive conduct they exhibit. The work also involved an all out hunt on my part to place these inmates into environments and programs that would prove healthy for them.
I maintained a working relationship with my friends at the Institute and checked their progress weekly. I believe that the power to empathize, or the ability to put yourself in someone else's place begins with an open mind. When I say that we must become active listeners in order to understand one another, I mean to say that there are subtle movements in our speech, certain words that we use, certain utterances that are not directed towards us, certain circumstances unrevealed to us.
There have been numerous debates within the last decade over what needs to be done about welfare and what is the best welfare reform plan. In the mid-1990s the TANF, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Act was proposed under the Clinton administration. This plan was not received well since it had put a five year lifetime limit on receiving welfare and did not supply the necessary accommodations to help people in poverty follow this guideline. Under the impression that people could easily have found a job and worked their way out of poverty in five years, the plan was passed in 1996 and people in poverty were immediately forced to start looking for jobs. When the TANF Act was up for renewal earlier this year, the Bush administration carefully looked at what the TANF Act had done for the poverty stricken. Bush realized that, in his opinion, the plan had been successful and should stay in effect with some minor tweaking. Bush proposed a similar plan which kept the five year welfare restriction in place but did raise the budgeted amount of money to be placed towards childcare and food stamps. Both the TANF Act and Bush's revised bill have caused a huge controversy between liberal and conservative activists. The liberals feel that it is cruel to put people in a situation where they can no longer receive help from the government since so many people can not simply go out and get a job and work their way out of poverty. They feel if finding a job was that easy, most people would have already worked their way out of poverty. Throughout the years, there has been much controversial concerning the Electoral College and whether or not it should be abolished. There was multiple way that were being considered at the time of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Some including election of the President and Vice President by the Congress, by the governors of each state, by the state legislation, and by direction popular vote. The United States Government has pumped more than $3.5 trillion U.S. taxpayer dollars into welfare but, ironically, the poverty rate is higher than when they started (Tanner, Welfare Reform). This outrageous amount of money proves that welfare will lead United States into debt. The original intent of current welfare benefits has failed; therefore the national welfare system must be reformed. To fully understand how to reform the welfare system Americans must know what the history of welfare is, illegitimate births’ obvious connection to crime and welfare, how welfare has failed to keep the poverty rate down, the great problem of dependency, and finally what reforms must be made. Welfare reforms will greatly help this Nation become stronger and have a more secure future.
Effective communication is important when working with children and young people. Effective communication is good as it helps make relationships between the child and adult, this will further the children’s communication skills and they will then be able to make friends. Communication is also important as it’s how we express and share our feelings, needs and ideas, that’s why it’s important for adults to make good relationships with the children. Children should feel comfortable and relaxed when communicating as this makes them more likely to enjoy communication and be able to discuss any problems to the adults.

Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust.
For example, as a LIT when faced with a problem where two children had an issue with each other, I had them explain the reasons for their issues and had them find an amicable solution for both of their issues. Moreover, to have them agree upon a solution I mediated the discussion to clear up any misunderstandings when either one had trouble explaining their point to one another. All the while, I made sure not to pass any judgement onto the kids so that neither would believe the other was more favoured in the conversation. In the end, by giving them time to explain their thoughts to each other they came to an understanding and settled their dispute. Another example was during my placement where I had to deal with a child who had a reoccurring problem of not listening to staff. Since I knew letting his past behaviour impede on how I spoke to him would only skew my chance at helping him solve his listening issue, I made sure not to treat him differently from the other kids. Therefore, I had him go over the situation he was in and think of why it was important to listen to other people, especially to the staff. In addition to this request, I also asked him to explain how he would feel if other people did not listen to him. Through this discussion, I believe he

Americans are living in a decade plagued by inflation, declining stocks, and reduced job opportunities and as a result, making a living has become increasingly difficult for many Americans. As the population increase, jobs become scarce and people without an education or specialized job training may find themselves struggling to secure financial stability. Those who are unable to obtain a job are often left to depend on the government to support them and their families through a program known as welfare. Although welfare was designed as a short term program to help those in need until they can get back up on their feet, welfare has become a program that is abused by many and has the potential to perpetuates a cycle of poverty by those who choose not to work and stay on welfare. Stricter requirements regarding people on welfare seeking employment would help to reduce the number of people receiving welfare and help transition them back towards independence.
To sum it all up, the welfare system in the U.S. Is robbing the workers of their hard earned money, providing no help to the U.S. Economy, and lastly welfare had a good history but has slowly gone into the dumps. The U.S. Government spends almost $132 billion on welfare a year. Think of how else that could be used to help America. Another "fun" fact is that in 8 states people on welfare are paid more than a public school teacher.
The six major welfare programs in the United States, Medicaid, SNAP, Housing assistance, SSI, TANF, & general assistance (Elliott par.3). 52.2 million Americans are on at least one government welfare program (Elliot par. 6). This number is way too high. Welfare is for people who truly do not have a sufficient enough income to provide for their family. 52.2 million Americans are not below the poverty line and most make enough money to live a decent life, yet they still receive welfare benefits. 28% of those recipients are on Medicaid or SNAP (Elliot par 6.). The participation rate jumped from 18.6% in 2009 to 21.3% in 2012, and moreover, 43% of recipients received welfare for more than 37 months (Elliott par. 8, 11-12). Welfare is supposed to be a temporary way for people to focus on picking themselves up through a little bit of government assistance. If the government allows people to stay on welfare for longer than a year they have no incentive to find themselves a steady paying job because they can live off minimum wage and welfare. We can fix this by only allowing people to stay on welfare for a year at most. A year is more than enough time to find a job and earn a steady income. Also, allowing people to stay on government assistance this long in this large of a quantity increases how much is spent on
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
My strengths are the ability to interaction with students. I will try to use my time to build positive relationship with individuals and keep record of their behaviors, characteristics and specific concerns. This will allow the students to trust me and allow me
