Writing is a very important skill to have especially in the real world. Writing helps organize ones’ thoughts so that society can understand their views and opinions. It leads to expression and imagination to share to the world. Writing is an inevitable skill to have; it goes hand in hand with reading. To not have writing and reading is almost immoral; writing is an essential everyday skill that we need to continue on with our lives and we take it mostly for granted when people in other countries in the world do not have the material and resources to expand their vocabulary and writing skills. Writing helps me become more proficient in this class an especially in my other classes. In my history class we are to write an essay in the matter of …show more content…
It would not solely be me that communicates but, every single person in that room communicate with each other and this class is a helpful step towards becoming a better communicator. This class and overall experience first semester of college has been eye opening and a taste of reality. College is not as hard as a lot of high-school teachers exaggerated to be. Yes, it is much more difficult than high-school but, the work that has to be done is bearable and possible to achieve. For example, the essays and work that have to be done were not impossible to do but, more difficult to write because there is more expected from …show more content…
Mostly due to the fact that that is all we did in my AP English class senior year; Find what the prompt is asking, find literary devices that support the answer to the prompt, do an outline, and write a cohesive, well organized essay under forty minutes. Finding evidence to support my claim was a strength but, a weakness at the same time. It was my weakness as well because I did not really find evidence to back up the authors claim in the passages; I did that for my claims only. To say I didn’t bring any weaknesses to the class would be a lie. I feel like I brought a lot of weaknesses due to the fact that in English class my senior year we did not focus mostly on the grammatical aspect of in writing essays. We mostly focused on the content and if we answered the topic while being able to back it up through the literary devices we found in the passages all under forty minutes. I believe my weaknesses include grammar and structure, while I found that I lack in strength in time management during the semester. Through the experience of my first semester of college I have gotten a better grasp at managing my time. I do plan on continuing to improve my writing skills to help me become a better communicator even after finishing the one more semester of English I have to
In “Writing to Learn: Writing across the Disciplines,” Anne J. Herrington finds different sources stating that writing is to be taken serious. Janet Emig says, "writing represents a unique mode of learning-not merely valuable, not merely special, but unique” (1) meaning that writing is far more essential than we ought to make it seem. Anne Herrington wants educators teaching in economics, history, chemistry or any other subject to guide their students into understanding why progressing their writing skills will be more helpful to them. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the educator; whether he/she wants their students to use writing as a way for students to adapt to different disciplines.
Writing is important because it enables a community to create symbols and signs understandable. The society must have a stable food supply in order to keep its people alive,
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
One strength I had was the organization of the essay. My sentences I wrote were not all over the place each paragraph talks about one topic. One weakness I had with writing this essay was my writing style. I noticed that in this essay my writing style was a bit choppy. I should have read my essay out loud to see if it had a good flow between my ideas.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
My first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I had to read the essay topic over and over again to understand what it was asking for. I would worry that I wouldn’t understand the topic correctly. While writing the essay I was scared to get out of topic and write about something else I wasn’t supposed to write about. Another thing that would happen to me was that suddenly my mind would go blank and wouldn’t be able to think about what else I could write about. The essay I liked writing the most this semester was the second essay. I enjoyed making my own planet and how my alien had a quest with all the commercials I saw on the TV. The hardest essay I wrote this semester was the fourth and last essay. I got confused when I was writing the body paragraphs. This writing weakness impacted my life by showing me that I have trouble thinking about how I could write my essays. I think I should start reading books and maybe I could get a few ideas out of those books.
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
A mentally disabled but diligent female high school student attends a tutoring session at the learning center to work on a classroom writing assignment. Despite encouragement and prompts from the tutor, the student is unable to write. She states that she hates writing and declares that she will take a zero for the grade rather than complete the assignment.
My English 1310 course was taught by Professor Daniel Stuart. He taught us the concept of academic writing and why it is important. Academic writing is the process of breaking down ideas, using a formal tone, deductive reasoning and third person. Writing done to carry out the requirements of a college or university on a research based level. It requires a starting point or introduction, followed by a thesis on the preferred topic, then comes proving and disproving of the evidence based arguments. It is important because it is a way to communicate our thoughts clearly and originality. It helps us think and see what evidence we can come up to contribute to that thinking. This course approached this idea of academic writing by exploring further
In essentially all areas of academics, college students benefit greatly by learning how to write competently. At school, successful writing does not just benefit students inside of the english classroom. According to Marquette University, “Writing is the primary basis upon which your work, your

Is essay writing is one of the important skills that schools teach? In our generation we are told by society that english isn't an important class that we need to take. It seems that most people find it irrelevant to day to day life. In reality it is one of the most important classes you will take. Sure, a police officer might not need to be able to comprehend shakespeare or quote Edgar Allen Poe, but he will need to know how to write a report on a ticket he issued or a murder scene he responded to.
The ability to write well is not a naturally acquired skill; it is usually learned or culturally transmitted as a set of practices in formal instructional settings or other environments. Writing skills must be practiced and learned through experience. Writing also involves composing, which implies the ability either to tell or retell pieces of information in the form of narratives or description, or to transform information into new texts, as in expository or argumentative writing. Perhaps it is best viewed as a continuum of activities that range from the more mechanical or formal aspects of “writing down” on the one end, to the more complex act of composing on the other end (Omaggio Hadley, 1993). It is undoubtedly the act of
In his article ‘Writing – The Forgotten Skill’, Bowen (2004) has indicated that writing is definitely not a favorite among both teachers and students. He further confers that many English literature lessons carried out around the world devote less time to teaching the writing skills to students. More attention is spent on the reading, listening and speaking components. Teachers attribute this to the lack of time. Teachers only have five periods a week within which reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and literature need to be taught. At least a double period is needed to carry out a writing lesson. Apart from this, the fact that teachers have to spend a good deal of time on correcting students’
As I stated in my previous reflective essay, I hated writing in grade school. I sucked my teeth and groaned every time my teachers assigned an essay for homework. I don’t actually hate writing. I just disliked it because I never excelled in it. I wrote just to get the job done, but never took the time to pay attention to the writing process and the other aspects of writing. As I grew older and got a career, I realized how important writing was in the real world. From friends revising your status updates on Facebook that were plagued in grammatical errors or writing a professional email to your boss, writing skills are crucial to the real world.
