Language, like technology, is continuously evolving, and one of the greatest innovations due to technology is virtual society. Virtual society which can also be regarded as a social media platform, forms a vast part of many individuals’ existence. Because of how the world is rapidly evolving and changing we are almost left with no option but to use social media or be a part of virtual society if we want to communicate. Many social media outlets were created with the intention of allowing people to communicate, little realizing that it will have an impact on our use of language, which is the medium through which we communicate.

Twitter has the concept of “following”, which is when a certain individual selects to be updated with the posts of another person or organization. Unlike Facebook or LinkedIn, where members need to approve social connections, anybody is allowed to follow anybody else of their choice on public Twitter. Since its creation, Twitter is known most for “what is trending”, so users can merge their tweets and be part of the conversation thread by adding hashtags to a keyword on their posts. It has been stated to be a powerful social networking tool for both business and personal use, and reasonably students will be making use of it for personal use. Twitter serves various purposes such as the primary one of Networking; connecting respective users to other businesses or people in real time, giving both users direct access to their targets. It also has the intention of Business promotion and social communication- which is mostly why students make use of it. Twitter has also been said to be useful in terms of updating users with the late-breaking news and an update about whatever it is that they(users) have shown interest; a brand, favorite celebrity or entertainment in general.
Twitter has its advantageous and disadvantageous aspect in terms of the effect that it causes, especially in the case of college students which as mentioned, are constant users of the social network.
