An urban landscape will always have a reason as to why it was assembled. Throughout time, each and every individual that has encountered a place will grow a significant memory and particular feeling to it. In the book, Cultural Geographies: An Introduction by John Horton and Peter Kraftl, has acknowledged that “Landscapes make us feel, act, or speak in a particular way - they do particular things to us when we look at them.” In many ways, this statement is true. If someone goes to a camping site and start reminiscing all their childhood memories, they begin to get emotional, saddened, or happy. It does not matter if it is a good or bad memory, the landscape is in control of them at that moment. Although there are so many urban landscapes that …show more content…
It is a place where I feel the love of a parent and a bond of a sibling altogether. By merely glancing at my house, I encounter flashbacks of my childhood that bring unforgettable thoughts and feelings. I feel the forgiveness of my mother when I broke her favorite flower vase. I feel the love of my father when he read me bedtime stories as a child. I especially remember the value of honesty that my siblings and I learned after confessing to taking the hidden candy. To me, that is the beauty of creating memories on any landscape. It does not matter what you look at, a tree, a rock, a window; you will always see a piece of mind flowing around. However, it does not necessarily apply to just viewing something but what you can smell. If I stepped into my backyard and started smelling all the greenery; memories of family gathering start appearing. I could see all the happiness brought out in just one place. How the smell of barbeque and beer generated smiles and laughter. It is heartwarming how any landscapes can do so much. Like mentioned before, makes us feel and act in certain ways! Because this is the only home I know, it will continue to hold a unique place in my …show more content…
There will always be a reason as to why a building was built. Houses are meant to bring safety. That is the number one priority of a parent and so is security and unity. Fortunately, my parents were able to do this for my siblings and I by building our first home. It will be something I genuinely appreciate about them. Because without a home, I would not have anything to look forward to after a long day of working hard. The landscape is roughly hundred thousand feet long estimating to 2.3 acres. The first house was built in 1990, finishing in 1992. The material elements used to construct this building is mainly wood, timber, and cement along with all the necessities. The second house was built in 1998, finishing in the 2000s. Because this property was significant, my uncles and aunts decided to contribute money and construct an attachment, a home for my grandparents to live in. Since then this landscape has been owned by my parents. My siblings have lived here most of their life, and I have lived here all my life. That is why this property is so meaningful to me. It has all my childhood memories all in one
Each person has a place that calls to them, a house, plot of land, town, a place that one can call home. It fundamentally changes a person, becoming a part of who they are. The old summer cabins, the bedroom that was always comfortable, the library that always had a good book ready. The places that inspire a sense of nostalgic happiness, a place where nothing can go wrong.
In "A Tale of the Ragged Mountains," it is pretty obvious that the landscape is going to play an important part in the story - we are given the setting right in the title. However, a majority of the story actually takes place in an "Orientalized" locale that has been transposed into the Ragged Mountains. This alone is a great juxtaposition: the title describes what seems to be a run-down, unappealing landscape, while the real action takes place in fantastical setting. But why is the landscape so important if the psychological aspect is what Poe is trying to focus on? Most likely it is because the landscape gives us clues about what is actually happening in the minds of the characters, and hints at things that make the story clearer. For example, Bedloe starts his tale by describing "the thic...
One’s sense of place is determined by where they feel comfortable, at home, or simply welcomed. Millions of people consider their sense of place as being in an urban setting, but millions more are cast out of the urban space. What causes this “urban unevenness”? There are many factors to consider when thinking about the urban divide including race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and physical and mental health to name a few. Massey’s essay, “Global Sense of Place”, discusses what she calls “time-space compression” which can explain why some people feel included in an urban space and others are excluded. Massey’s idea of “sense of place” is furthered by looking at examples from Williamson’s accounts of the destruction
Joe operates a successful commercial landscaping and tree trimming business, and client's keeps his operation extremely busy. Places can have multiple meaning and value depending on the perspective it is viewed from (Massey as cited in Kaplan & Recoquillon, 2014). It can be valued for its’ mythical and historical background, its’ physical and architectural state, and the environmental role it plays in the lives of most people. According to Margaret Somerville (2013) the continent of Australia was created and shaped by two sisters who travelled around its’ perimeters. These mythical stories were established to fit the landscape and to create a visual narrative of Australia. In addition to these mythical
Our receptivity to the landscape can be influenced by irrational emotions. When the newlyweds move in, they are wary of their new landscape, the unfamiliar surroundings, cultural barriers and differences to their old landscape along with the people in the landscape cause them to be unreceptive to the landscape. The changing relationship between the people is demonstrated through the comparative description of the couple in their old and new neighbourhoods. Their prior residence was “in the expansive outer suburbs where good neighbours were seldom seen and never heard”. This is juxtaposed against the noisy Macedonian family that “shouted, ranted and screamed”.
place. This is where we come to grips with our lives, relax, and reflect. This
That it is not a place of nothing, but is very much something. It is a place that helps one to remember. It is a place no longer filled with complete emptiness, but is beginning to repopulate with people coming to visit. This is so important because remembering helps to recall the absence of what once stood and happened, and people coming to remember together helps to fill that
The feeling of security that was so pure. It became a reminder of a time when everything was simple and it was so easy to find happiness in the most unexpected ways. I remember considering myself lucky whenever my mother would indulge in my pleas to play the piano. Never would have I thought that listening to the notes of “Send In the Clowns” or a song from Forrest Gump could give me so much joy. Another fond memory was our parents allowing my siblings and I to play in the rain. Being given permission to do so was already a big thing for us. To be able to enjoy such a simple act is something I hold unto. This house is the symbol of my childhood innocence and a life unmarred by worries. This is the place where I 've felt contentment in its most basic
Everyone has a special place that people will never forget. Sometimes it is because there were places that people experienced great joy or comfort. A special place represents peoples’ special memories either good or bad. Memory will following people whole life, and store people’s heart deeper. Good memory will coming all time. My special place and my memory is my grandparent’s house; my grandparent’s house practically is my second home. I would never forget that special place because of things going on my grandparent’s house, which is symbolized by my grandparent’s love.
Each year millions of dollars are spent on therapy because people want to re-live their childhood. These people discover late in life that childhood was the time period where the most meaningful parts of life were. Things from our past don't just fade away, they are part of us, and most people greatly miss them weather they know it or not. My most meaningful place is my parents' house because it is a symbol of reliving my childhood, indulging in good times, and just plain feeling at home.
A place, for me, is somewhere that I am familiar with and I recognize it in some way as my own special geographic location. It is somewhere I am emotionally attached to and it is a place that I wish to remain at. I personally feel that it has taken me years to achieve this particular comprehension about where for certain that place is for me in my life, and to make out why I feel a certain way about being within the walls of my own home. I have now come to realize that my home is where my heart will always truly be, because I believe it is the only place where I will always be loved without
I think that, these kinds of places are meaningful to people because they are natural and people can be there alone, away from their everyday life.
Several authors have based some of their writings on their spirituality. Some of these writings are as intricate as the Bible or as basic as an article in a local newspaper, but the meaning and passion behind them should never be doubted. In Leslie Marmon Silko's "Landscape, History, and the Pueblo Imagination", she expresses how her people have a very different meaning of "landscape". To Silko's people, the popular definition of landscape as being "a portion of territory the eye can comprehend in a single view" makes it seem as though the viewer is on the outside looking in. To them, the term landscape is much more than that. One cannot leave their surroundings, the earth and nature are always around us and we are always interconnected. The ancie...
Outdoor recreation is something that everyone needs. Finding that place within yourself that allows you to forget about everything. Whether that be playing with your kids in the nearby park, fishing with your grandfather, hiking with someone or just by yourself you learn something new about yourself. Some people use recreation to forget about something and they use being outside as a calming effect. Williams and Stewart (1998) believe that nature, as a place, creates an emotion bond, has a complex meaning to the person, and that people have this draw back to the place. To get the same feeling that someone would get while doing an activity in nature to simulate Williams and Stewart’s (1998) belief, I recently participated in an
