Conversation is very significant and it is an effective way of not only sharing information but also about socializing. People who support texting especially for students say that it is an effective way of building individuals’ confidence among students who are not confident enough to communicate with others. They believe that through texting, students are able to construct meaningful and concrete information. Supporters such as David Crystal believe that texting provides extra practice to those students who are not able to convey information. He believes that texting helps the student to know how to express themselves in the shortest possible way and in clear form. Crystal further explains that students who are not proficient with language will not be able to text and convey the required message. This means that texting not only improves the skills of the student but also does affect them negatively. From his argument, it can be seen that she advocates for writing as an effective, interesting and most effective way of improving and establishing language in students. Let’s Talk” author Sherry Turkle wants to tell the reader that people should value and respect their relationships by replacing smartphones with face-to-face conversations. She is a professor who has been studying psychology for around 30 years; she uses many other psychologists studies to prove that people are relying on smartphones too much and start to replace conversations with texting. In the essay, she explains how the smartphone is becoming an essential part of American lives which later affects people’s way of communication. She also provides several solutions for people to solve the negative effects that come from those devices so people can learn how to push back against it and start to engage more in the conversation to benefit yourself and society.
This is where she uses ethos to provide the reader with an understanding that she is a credible writer. First she uses the National Center for Education Statistics information to provide a strong base of knowledge regarding the topic that is already available. The article from the National Center for Education Statistics includes a quote from a teacher stating “the use of acronyms and shorthand in text messages for students’ inability to spell and ultimately to write well” (pg. 2). She goes on to explain teacher’s viewpoints and their beliefs on the topic after seeing a decrease in writing abilities. There is a quote included by Naomi Baron, a professor at American University, in which states “so much of American society has become sloppy and laissez faire about the mechanics of writing” (pg.2). This quote provides evidence that everyone should be concerned about the effects because our society is facing the issues as well not only students. As she continues to provide a foundation for others ideas regarding the topic, she changes viewpoints to those who see the positives in texting. Cullington uses an author to elaborate on the positives that increased texting can have on individuals. David Crystal explains that students “sharpen their diplomatic skills . . . [because] it allows more time to formulate their thoughts and express them carefully” (pg.4). This is something that is important in today’s day and age where people want the short and sweet version, not something drawn out that can be hard to understand. In the article, “Does Texting Affect Writing?”, the author Michaela Cullington conveys her speculation that texting does not correlate to how students write formal essays. At the beginning of the article Cullington introduces the term texting and the convenience texting brings. Later expressing her concern that the texting language “Textspeak” is actually affecting students writing; then contradicts these views by using primary and secondary sources (news articles, books, her own surveys and research). In addition, she uses an anecdote to tell of her own experience with texting and writing. Together with other evidences and research put together, she uncovers the debate between textspeak and formal writing. On the basis of her research, she concludes that the state of texting does not interfere with writing or writing abilities.
In the article Turkle talks about positives and negatives so it doesn’t really focus on one aspect. Technology has a lot of pros and cons, and even the most technologically advanced person can agree with that. She starts the article with a short story about a teenage girl that depends on technology to communicate with her friends. This is also one of the main topics of her article, Turkle believes that phone calls are avoided because of the immediate need for a response. Turkle states, “The advantage of screen communication is that it is a place to reflect, retype, and edit.” (Turkle 374) During phone calls you really don’t have the advantage of taking the time to form a response whereas in texting like Turkle said you have time to think about what you’re going to say. This gives people a way to form an identity that they want others to see. A lot of shy and socially awkward people love technology because of this, it is an easier way to express the person they wish they were. Turkle writes: “It’s only on the screen that shy people open up.” (Turkle 380) Texting and emailing allow people to reveal and hide any aspect of their lives. Today in the Twenty-First century we have surpassed many technological advancements and excelled far past what we would have ever thought. One of our greatest technological advancements is the thing we hold in our hands everyday, our cell phones. Sometimes we don't realize just how much our phones can distract us from our lives. As a generation glued to our phones us teenagers send an average of 3,339 texts per month. In Randy Cohen's essay, “When texting is wrong” he states how we are overcome by texting and how it damages our social and personal lives.
A recent outbreak in teen texting is taking a toll on their daily lives. Many teenagers have cell phones. Their parents get them phones for their safety and well-being, but is that what teens really use them for? I for one know that I rarely call my parents or use my phone for important reasons. Most of the time, I’m scrolling through Instagram and snapchat, to keep up with everyone that I will see in less than a day. The editorial from The Jersey Journal, called Teens are going to extremes with texting, informs the common people of the statistics of teen texting. The editorials main argument is communicating the excessiveness of teen texting. The author develops this point through expert uses of word choice, but also extreme examples and statistics.

Text messaging has become a norm in our generation, as technology rapidly advances and gives way to more efficient forms of communication in a fast-paced world; and many are skeptical about the influence this new form of interaction is having on our society, especially with our younger generation. David Crystal, a professor at the University of Wales, writes “2b or Not 2b?” in support of text messaging. He insists, despite those who underestimate or negate the beneficial influence text messaging has on language proficiency, that “there is increasing evidence that [texting] helps rather than hinders literacy” and that the fairly recent form of communication has actually been around for a while and “is merely the latest manifestation of the human ability to be linguistically creative and to adopt language to suit the demands of diverse settings. In contrast, Jeffery Kluger argues in “We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging” that text messaging is rapidly becoming a substitute for more genuine forms of communication and is resulting in difficulty among young peoples of our generation to hold a face-to-face conversation, engage in significant nonverbal expression, and ultimately build effective relationships with family, friends and co-workers. Both writers’ present valid arguments, however, my personal experience with text messaging has led me to agree more with Crystal’s view on the matter. Text messaging is indeed having a positive effect on society by making frequent texters primarily aware of the need to be understood, as well as offering betterment of spelling and writing through practice, and reinventing and expanding on a bygone dimension of our language through the use of rebuses and abbreviations.
