Technology Enhances the Human Experience
“There are certain things that are fundamental to human fulfillment. The essence of these needs is captured in the phrase, to live, to love, to learn, and to leave a legacy.” – Stephen Covey
What does it mean to be human? It seems like such a simple question to answer, yet I find myself at a loss for words. After hours pondering the question; the desire to live a fulfilling life resonates when answering the question. Steven Covey hit the nail on the head when he said, “to live, to love, to learn, and to leave a legacy” when discussing human fulfillment. Humans are able to meet these needs through economic well-being, social experiences, cognition and intelligence, free-will and expression as a means

Through the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter, people are able make connections that might otherwise not be possible. Social media and smart phones have been a godsend for me, previously I rarely found time to pen a letter or talk on a landline, I did a terrible job of maintaining friendships, technology has changed that for me improving my relationships and generating new ones. It would appear that I’m not alone, “half a billion people are now on Facebook suggests that people believe the benefits of connecting with others, sharing information, networking, self-promoting, flirting, and bragging” (Singer 464). Restak echo’s this when he said “laptop computers, cell phones, e-mail, and fax machines keep us in constant touch with the world” (415). “Philosophers interested in friendship, romance, and intimacy more generally have, in recent times, endeavored to distinguish between the types of people we like and the specific people we feel connections with in our lives” (Christian 106) reiterating that relationships with others are important to us. Video chat applications are another example of technology that affords easier connectivity, especially for those people who are unable to leave their …show more content…
Humans are inquisitive by nature and exhibit a strong desire to learn. My son has ADHD with a strong desire not to be medicated, as a result we sought alternative treatment options which led us the biofeedback, a technology based cognitive therapy that allowed him to learn to control his brain function in order to cope with his disability. It was a great alternative to pills and assisted him in coping with sensory overload discussed by Restak “our brain is being forced to manage increasing amounts of information within shorter and shorter time intervals” (416). Technology is also an anti-boredom tool, sparking creativity, Wasik used technology to communicate with people in order to elicit support of his successful flash mob experiment
Have you ever made any friends via Facebook, Twitter, or Snapchat that you have never met before? I know I have through Twitter due to having the same interests. Some may say those friends are not really your friends, but virtual ones instead. In the article, “The Limits of Friendships,” by Maria Konnikova, she talks about friendships that are made virtually and in reality. The author argues that the use of social media has hindered friendships and face to face connections within one’s social circle, however, she does not address that they have met their closest support group through social media. Face to face connections help identify who one’s true friends are and they are more realistically made when it is in person rather than over social media, but there Konnikova fails to address the fact that social media has allowed many to connect
In conclusion, humankind is blessed with life as God created it. One must reflect on their actions throughout life because one will be judged by God in the next life, one must see the importance of gasping liberation, and one must have a loving and open heart when helping the poor. Life should be lived to its fullest because once time is lost, it cannot be regained; life needs to be appreciated.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson-
I have never pondered on such a question of what it means to be a human being. What it means to be a human being is not just having a face, eyes, heart, or being able to drive a car, or to own a house. Being a human being is much more than that, deeper and more passionate. Being a human being is to have the ability to having rational thought and to think deeply. Being a human is finding a meaning or a purpose.
In her article “Friends Indeed?” Joel Garreau explains that for two decades, online social networks have been touted as one of the finest flowerings of our new era. But what is the strength of ties so weak as to barely exist? Who will lend you lunch money? Who’s got your back?” Technology has overtaken individuals by social media, allowing many people to communicate online rather than having face-to-face communication. Many “relationships” begin online, and end online. Although, true relationships are rarely created fast, it gradually grows and becomes stronger and stronger over the years. However, in our immediate society this is not the case. But the questions still remains, as Joel Garreau points out “Who would lend you lunch money?” in other words, who will help you physically not online. In our impatient society, technologies influenced the way individual communicate, and that often times leads to depression, loneliness and addictions.
Facebook, Instagram, Texting, Email, Twitter, and Snapchat they’ve brought a lot of good to us. We can now do work faster and more efficiently. We can communicate with old friends faster and cheaper than ever before. They allow us to have constant communication with one another, but they take as much as they give. Events and special occasions that use to be cherished and shared with friends and family only, face to face is now being put on display for all to see. When did we get so emotionless? When did a one sentence text message suddenly become the way to announce an engagement or a picture on Facebook be the way a family member discovers you’re sick? In the article titled “Alone together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from
What does it mean to be human? Sure, one must have the usual physical features such as fingers, eyes, arms, hands, feet, etc., but what does it really mean? Must the human be able to speak? To take upon the actions of themselves? Whatever it means, it can be interpreted in any way from anyone. The physical attributes of any human can be compared to those of our evolutionary ancestors. However, it is possible to believe that there are many characteristics that make a human, but only six define the true, ideal human.
In the articles, “No Need to Call” by Sherry Turkle and “I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight” by Jenna Wortham, both authors discuss how the power of social media has drastically changed our social lives. Both authors agree that social media has influenced the way people interact and how it has vastly influenced social behavior and communication. With the rise of social media, there are concerns that many people are now substituting virtual, online communications for real-life social relationships. Therefore, the argument is whether the lack of personal contact diminishes our opportunities for meaningful relationships as well as weakens our social skills. Does texting have the potential to hamper our social skills and relationships? Perhaps;
“I like me,” said by Leo Buscaglia during one of his speeches. He was a professor at the University of Southern California, and one day learned about death by a fellow student. This led him to question why human beings learn different things essential for their future, but they do not learn about the meaning of life. Following this question, Buscaglia further goes to define what it takes to become a fully functioning human being. He said humans need to value and love themselves, to believe in death, to openly express themselves, to believe that no one is above or below to each other, to do things now instead of later, and to live life to its fullest (YouTube, “The art of being fully human”). Of course, there
The development of technology has led up to different ways of social interaction with one another. The launch of the computer was a huge impact in American history. It wasn’t only the computer that launched but also the Internet. Which brought different ways that people could interact with one another though Email and social networks (Lutfala). Some of the more popular social networks used are twitter and Facebook. People may become addicted to tweeting and posting up a tweet or status, this may become a priority to some people. These network accounts allow people to interact with friends and family from all over the world whenever they want with no cost, however people are so addicted to these social network they forget the way people are supposed to interact and that’s by talking in person. Online, children and teenagers can have hundreds of “friends” without having to leave their home or open their mouths. Although is may seem easier for people to send a quick text, email or instant message it destroys the meaning of being able to interact with our friends and family and actually get to see each other face to face.
Humans may be one of the most complex species on this earth thus far. We are the only known species who contemplates their existence so deeply and writes novels worth of work on it. But what exactly does it mean to be a human and how is our humanness defined? For centuries philosophers have written countless works on what they believe makes a person truly humane and how we differentiate between those who are “bad” and those who are “good” humans. In a world that is so subjective and that has so many opinions, routes, and options this may be one of the hardest concepts to define.
Three small words can bring inner happiness to me and others. Having the ability to change your attitude towards life and what defines one will create a feeling of peace. Living your life can bring good and bad regrets, but by the choice we make can bring happiness, and a meaningful life. The goal of this essay is to show what credo I live by and what defines me as a person. Having the power to live with the choices I had made, determination towards a goal, and finding a deeper meaning to life.
People are able to communicate anytime with each other without fear of disrupting anyone. People can’t call each other at two in the morning, but they can send each other an email or comment on some’s profile picture. That makes people more connected and more involved in each other’s lives. “Social media tools can be a gre...
