In order to promote sustainable policy, there must be an incentive to implement change. If any part of the food chain (i.e. producers, suppliers, processors, etc.) cannot keep up with the public demand of food, the food system is unproductive. Although progressive policy might possess the correct intentions, it must be physically and economically feasible. Ironically, contemporary food systems already produce mass amounts of food, but have zero nutritional value or are quite expensive. It is through the use of industrial agriculture, instead of small-scale farming, that the contemporary food system faces an environmental crisis. Contemporary practices emphasize production over sustainability. For example, La Via Campesina (2009) stresses the importance of soil. The transnational movement for traditional agriculture emphasizes that soils are main driving factors for food. It is the starting point for growing food, no matter the method of production. However, over the last 50 years, industrial agriculture has caused the loss of “30 – 60 tonnes of soil organic matter for every hectare of agricultural land” (p. 14). For an integral part of agricultural production, industrial practices clearly do not think long term. To promote fertile and healthy soil, which results in nutritious and bountiful food, nations must cut back on industrialization. On small-scale farms, industrialization and mechanization is not a necessity. Small producers are able to rely on sustainable, and environmentally safe practices to produce food. La Via Campesina (2009) argues that by replacing nitrogen fertilizers by organic agriculture, or cultivating nitrogen-fixing plants, we can promote true agrarian reform (p. 7). Roberts points out that rather than food system, more people tend to recognize food as a problem or an opportunity. On the topic of environmental impacts due to “industrial farming”, Bill McKibben and Blake Hurst share completely different perspectives. McKibben believes that industrial farming has simply left an unexcusable bad impact on the environment, saying that it is unethical and that the meat we eat is potentially killing our environment and us as well. Increased population led to mass production of foods. However, even with this mass production, in under-developed countries, people are still undernourished. The backbone of a stable nation, socially and politically, is agriculture. Agriculture is the largest sector that provides a nation with food and employment. Agriculture is currently being affected by climate change and at the same time it is also a contributor to climate change. The drastic elevations in climate change started from the mid to late 20th century and they have been increasing since then (Boisvenue & Running 2006). Climate change is affecting agriculture by interfering with the efficiency of crop production. Agriculture is facing droughts, flooding, sea level elevations, natural disasters, and health hazards for employees. All of these exponents lead to crop failure that creates famines and food prices to rise. On the other side, agriculture is also contributing to climate change through their output of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints. These are caused by the activities that agriculture engages with such as breeding of livestock, ploughing of fields, deforestation, and the use of pesticides and other agrochemicals. Climate change affects countries differently, mainly due to their ability to adapt and their geographical location. Canada and Russia benefit from the changes in climate while Sudan and Bangladesh are affected negatively, struggling to adapt. Agriculture and climate change are interrelated processes that exist mutually making it harder to reduce one without affecting the other.
