Since the era human societies began shaping up, stratification of the society based on the individual talents had an important impact in establishing the system of modern nations and cultures. Undoubtedly, this layering between the social classes led to the germination of the seeds of superiority among the better families, and also among more powerful individuals. Although present day society is more tolerant and impartial than ever before, there are still some facets of the society in which inequality and discrimination prevails, or I should say plays the most important role in one’s life. The discrimination between human beings based on their race, color, gender, social, or economic status is one of the social evils that I think bothers me …show more content…
I was lucky enough to be a part of an educated family, and was never considered inferior or weaker than my brother and cousins. I received all the equal opportunities and amenities as all other members of my family. But looking around myself as a child, I used to observe the differences in the lifestyles of the poor and the rich, working and non-working women. I always realized that most of the people work equally hard, but do not receive the equal rewards. Housewives are no less than working women, but they are considered dependents and hold a weaker position in the society.
I was brought up with the target of proving to the society that girls are no less than boys, and women deserve an equal position in the nation. By getting higher education and serving the community, I will try to strengthen the significance of females in the world. Also, I would put as many efforts as I can in providing the underrepresented groups with better services and opportunities. I hope to get the chance to volunteer in several such activities in different regions of the world, and make the world a better place for all the groups human beings are divided
In "Class in America", Gregory Mantsios says that "when politicians and social commentators draw attention to the plight of the poor, they do so in a manner that obscures the class structure and denies any sense of exploitation." Based off our readings, class discussion and films, income inequality is known to be erased or ignore. Our society frowns upon the expression of income in our daily conversations, as it could be seen braggy or a complaint depending on your status of income. Because it's frowned upon to talk about, the topic of income inequality becomes erased or ignored. In addition, income inequality in America's class structure can affect people's ability to reach their American Dream.
Many minority groups describe racism and other forms of discrimination as being more than just prejudiced towards people based on certain characteristics. Prejudice plays a large role in what is considered to be racism, but it also consists of having a dominant position in society and power to institute and take advantage of their racism. This dominant group of people have the most power, the greatest privileges, and what’s considered to be the highest social status. They use their power to provide themselves with (easier) access to resources like housing, education, jobs, food, health, legal protection, and et cetera. On the other hand, the subordinate group of people are singled out for unequal treatment and are regarded as “objects” of collective discrimination. They are provided with inferior education, food, jobs, healthcare and et cetera.
Gone are the days of legalized slavery, of Nazi Germany, of women being incapable of having a notable opinion. No longer is there a system of racial segregation adopted by an entire country, complete white supremacy or lynchings performed by the Ku Klux Klan. Yet, although we are no longer exposed to such past experiences and despite us living in a world where diversity is embraced more than ever, the existence of prejudice remains. Today we have universally come to accept multiculturalism, varied ethnic backgrounds and those populations who historically were forever stigmatized. But in spite of these developments prejudice has manifested itself in other, more subtle ways and no matter how modernized society become such unfavourable attitudes
Overall, race, class and culture impacts one’s place in society. I have Four hundred years of history cannot be wiped away so easily. I realized that society has a long way to go and the importance of fighting all injustices. Martin Luther King captured it best by saying “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”.
Race is so much more than just a physical characteristic. It defines how people interact, see each other, and treat each other. It was Karl Marx that popularized the idea that there is a struggle between two social groups in which one prospers from the the exploitation of the other. This idea alone reveals much about our society and human nature: we are inherently competitive, even when it means we may have to do it at someone else’s expense. And we seem to be okay with this for we have done little to change it. However, when it is at the expense of an entire race, are we still able to so easily turn a blind eye? Race and the establishment of social hierarchy have a linkage that, although so engrained in our society to the point where it seems
Racism (n): the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other race (Wordnet search, 1), a controversial topic in today’s society, a subject that many people try to sweep under the rug, but yet a detrimental problem that has been present in America since the colonial era. Will this dilemma come to a halt? Can all Americans see each other as equals despite their skin color and nationality; and what role has it played in past generations versus today’s generations and how will it affect our future? Has this on going way of thinking gotten better or worse? These are questions raised when many think about the subject; especially members of American ethnic groups and backgrounds, because most have dealt with racial discrimination in their life time.
Overall discrimination is an awful thing. It is like a STD, it can be passed from parent to child, or someone can become infected if you don’t watch out. Discrimination is also like the plague. It sweeps over a large amount of people, infecting most, and most don’t survive. Though today much of the discrimination is gone, just like the plague, but it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to deal with people discrimination from others. Whether it be discrimination of one’s race, age, disability, or gender. Discrimination has numerous damaging effects to someone’s life. In Of Mice and Men the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer from the same effects. They allow for people to have control of them and walk all over them. Discrimination is like a fire... It hurts.
Examples of this can be seen from something as simple as a name. Often African Americans receive unfair opportunities just from their names. There are consequences of giving a kid a cultural or a unique name in today’s society. Job opportunities can be limited from something as simple as a name. Ziba Kashef states that, “Names are misspelled, mispronounced, and misunderstood in a country that is largely still ignorant and suspicious of otherness” (Pg. 435). This country is terrified of otherness as Kashef says it. Being different has its consequences and in most cases being different causes one to be looked at as inferior. There is often prejudice against people with cultural names, but there is a positive side to it. Employers and landlords can be charged in court if there is prejudice against someone’s name or speech. There are efforts being made to make America more equal, but there is much more that needs to be
Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. Thus we conclude superiority and inferiority associated with racial differences are often socially constructed to satisfy the socio-political agenda of the dominant group”(Heewon Chang,Timothy Dodd;2001;1).
When we see around us we see that we all are in the most advanced and technical world. We are in the 21st century where we consider ourselves the most modest and civilized people. But, I think the more we are modernized and enlightened, the more we are becoming narrow minded about race. According to me, in today’s world race is not only about color now, it is more about the upper class and lower class. We human beings are known as the most smartest of all the organisms, but our smartness is leading us to create and build differences between our own human race. Other animals and organisms with whom we share this planet and the ones from whom the species human came, never show these attitudes towards their other members. Firstly, in this
Race as a “…social and historical idea, not biological” (Palaita, Lecture 1/25/18), only works because according to Social Construction Theory, “…these categories work because our complacency allows us to presume that the identities are natural and a group’s social status relies on biology, rather than social/cultural circumstances” (Palaita, Lecture 1/25/18). Our unwillingness to challenge these identities has allowed these categories to be used to determine who will be on the advantageous side of the inequality we face here in the United States. If we no longer accepted these conditions, and change the way social groups are viewed and treated, we may create a new norm and close the inequality gap between social
Through the selected readings it becomes clear that race is not only a social construct but also a value that changes depending on the region in which one inhabits. Despite the lack of scientific support for race as a biological phenomenon, race still results in misfortune for many minorities. This present throughout everyday life in terms of job opportunities, education, and life experiences.
Although it is now illegal to discriminate anyone based on one’s race or gender it is still a practice that many take part in, whether it is in the work place or prejudice that take place as part of who someone is. As the momentum started to pick up behind the equal rights movement of the mid-century an even a greater number of people began to be aware of the fact that there really is no difference between people and that all should be treated the same. As time has progressed so have the beliefs of people, things that were once a part of everyday life like children not being able to go to school together are a thing of the past. We now live in a time of acceptance and less judgment we now live in a nation where we are not judged by the color of skin, but the content of our character (Martin Luther King
Discrimination and prejudice have been in our world for as long as humans have themselves. Discrimination has caused problems in societies all throughout history. But despite all of the terrible things that have happened because of prejudice and discrimination, it continues to live on in our world today.
There are number of way inequality and discrimination effect the people. Physical, emotional, Social, educational, financial, Society and Businesses.
