It has been around for centuries and will stay for centuries to come, it is social class; a division of a society based on social and economic status. Today America’s society is familiar with the common three stratum model which self explanatory is divided in three classes, upper, middle, and lower class. The very affluent and powerful are part of the upper class that possesses and controls the means of production. The middle class is full of small business owners, professional workers, and managers. Lastly the lower class depend on low salary jobs for their means of support and they unfortunately often experience poverty. Such as in chapter 7, Gulliver describes all the flaws of the Yahoos, principally detailing their greed and selfishness. Gulliver's story of wars, corrupt lawyers, and power seeking ministers as causes his master to become furious and Gulliver soon harvests the identical attitude towards the disgraceful human race. In return Gulliver's master explains the manners and conduct of the Yahoos, in which Gulliver sees the extraordinarily human sins, along with greed as the Yahoos accumulate glittering stones, also as they eat much more than they need to when they are given food. For example when he says, “If you throw among five Yahoos as much food as would be sufficient for fifty, they will, instead of eating peaceably, fall together by the ears, each single one impatient to have all to itself,” (Swift …show more content…
It has been expressed a lot in Gullivers Travels for example in the second part of the book, “Nothing angered and mortified me so much as the queen's dwarf; who being of the lowest stature that was ever in that country (for I verily think he was not full thirty feet high), became so insolent at seeing a creature so much beneath him, that he would always affect to swagger and look big as he passed by me in the queen's antechamber,” (Swift 125). Gulliver is upset because the queen’s dwarf bully’s him, because the dwarf is so little himself everyone bullies him and Gulliver is even smaller so the dwarf bullies him. This is an example of social relations. Everyone who gets bullied finds someone weaker than them to bully, it is a cycle that unfortunately still exist
Class is a “relational social categorization based on economic, cultural, and social characteristics” (Barnes 2016) this includes a person’s: income and wealth, networks and connections, cultural knowledge, and social status. When a person has a high social status, that often means that they have more power in society compared to a person who is in a lower social class than they. A good example of class and how it separates the lower classes from the higher classes are private schools. Private schools are often very expensive and people who are in lower class systems often cannot afford to send their kids their, causing an even larger gap between classes. If you have ever read the book 1984 by George Orwell, then an interesting topic may have crossed your mind. The way the classes of people break down can be quite similar, and very different at times. In the United States, we have classes like the lower class, the working class, and the middle class. In 1984, there were such classes as the Proles, the Outer Party, and the Inner Party. The way the classes are broken down in 1984 reminds me a little bit of my old history class. When I studied medieval times and the classes back then were broken down into the nobles, the bourgeois, and the serfs.
The working class stays working and the middle class stays being middle. Author Nick Tingle, wrote “The vexation of class”, he argues that the working class and the middle class are separated educationally based on culture and the commonplace. Tingle uses his own personal experiences and Ethos, to effectively prove his point about the difference in class based on culture ; although, Tingle also falls short by adding unnecessary information throughout the article that weakens his belief entirely.

Much of the class was centered on social class and particularly the working poor. The book Nickeled and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich should me a perspective I was aware of but not completely educated on. When Barbara went to find housing at almost every place it was too expensive to afford. By reading more into the book I found out many people in America are struggling to find affordable safe housing. This shocked me. By reading about this I gained the knowledge that everyone isn’t as lucky as I am and are working extremely hard to get out of the situation they are. Also there was a strong community connection amongst the workers everywhere people went. This made me realize that connections to people are probably one of the most important things you can have when you have close to nothing. It made me think about how my life would be if I were raised in a different environment. Like the story of The Other Wes Moore, I could have been the other Mackenzie Webber. A quote said by the author Wes Moore, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” I was able to learn that surroundings and actions you do truly do influence the way you grow up. By turning this situation on myself, it is amazing how different my life would have been if my parents didn’t make the sacrifices they did or

Social class, as defined by the film, is something that affects who you are as a person. In the film, the people saw class as the defining factor of a person. They saw class as a barrier between people. If one person is in a different class than another person, then obviously, they are not supposed to associate. They allowed their social class to dictate their action each day. It was amazing to me just how much the people in the film allowed their class to truly define them and really serve as a boundary in their life. The people in the film lived their daily life with their social class as the most influential factor. Their worth and value as individuals was not determined by anything else except the amount of money they had. It was really interesting to see how the amount of money a person had somehow equated with their worth in society. The same is true within our society today, but in the film, this aspect was especially evident. The film really shed a light on just how impactful social class is and just how much we allow it to
The comparison of Yahoos to humans in Book Four of Jonathon Swift's Gulliver's Travels is entirely inappropriate. The Yahoos are shown as base creatures of barbaric nature and with little or no aptitude for learning. Swift's use of these lowly creatures to symbolize man is harsh, however, it does serve to enhance his satire to a certain degree. Nonetheless, his comparison is inaccurate and degrading to Mankind.
In the fourth voyage, Swift presents a case study for opposing states of nature, with the Yahoos representing the argument that man is governed by his passions, seeking his own advantage, pursuing pleasures and avoiding pain, and the Houyhnhnms representing the argument that man is governed by reason. If this is the case, then Swift’s misanthropy was such that he saw men as the foul and disgusting Yahoos, and made it plain that reform of the species was out of the question. A major fault with this theory is that it leaves no place for Gulliver. When attention is drawn to the figure of Gulliver himself, as distinct from his creator, Swift, he is taken to be the moral of the story. If you can't be a Houyhnhnm you don't need to be a Yahoo; just try to be like Gulliver. The trouble with this idea is that when taking a closer look at Gulliver, he isn't worth emulating. The final picture of him talking with the horses in the stable for four hours a day, unable to stand the company of his own family, makes him look foolish. Another theory is that Gulliver made a mistake in regarding the Houyhnhnms as models to be emulated: so far from being admirable creatures they are as repulsive as the Yahoos. The Yahoos might be ruled by their passions, but these have no human passions at all. On this view, Swift was not advocating, but attacking reason.
The emperor of Lilliput plans to blind and starve Gulliver out of mercy. I feel like in the beginning of the book they were enemies and never got along. However I had a feeling by the end that would change. The Lilliputians gave Gulliver a chance and they saw who he really was and they let him go because they realized what they were doing was wrong.
And these had further subdivisions, which only goes to spell out just how particular this compartmentalization was. However, these classifications were rooted in the earlier British culture; they were based on hereditary institutions and predetermined identity. On the verge of the Industrial revolution, the aristocratic, hereditary institution was replaced by tags such as “upper class” because the primary source of class changed from inheritance to commercial wealth. When analyzing A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens one can see that Dickens reveals a dissociation among the upper and lower classes. The two classes are represented in a way which expresses the difference between the power, sense of entitlement and wealth of the upper class through ruthless and injustice actions put against the poor. This is seen through the character of Monseigneur who is a part of the upper class and seems as if he is the place holder of the aristocratic class. Lemuel Gulliver recounts his findings over four of his most impactful voyages in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. In Gulliver’s Travels, Gulliver gives his own candid account of all significant characters encountered and manages to fall into almost every influential person’s favor. Swift tactically shapes Gulliver’s encounters with characters from varying backgrounds to compare the behavior of the esteemed nobility with the behavior of commoners. Swift has Gulliver alter his demeanor based on his present surroundings to appeal to those around him and maintain his pride. By doing so, Swift intended to didactically explain his contempt for nobility, his misanthropy, and the dangers of pride.
Class distinction is one of Jane Austen’s themes in the novel, and the differentiation related to it is evidently depicted. Reading the novel from the first chapter, I realize that the author clearly illustrates that class is what matters most in many of the incidences displayed by the characters. Unless an individual is of a given class, the idea that he or she has money is not valued, since only birth in a certain background is what is of value. When a person openly values money over class, such a person is frowned upon. In general terms, the Novel shows a social world extremely stratified and full of pretension and class struggle.
