Mr. David Myers in “This Will Make You Smarter,” wrote an article called “Self-Serving Bias.” His ideas for writing this article were to illustrate the importance of how each of us thinks about ourselves and others. According to the author, we may not be fair or objective in some of our judgments. With respect to judging ourselves, we may be motivated to have a positive self-concept and high self-esteem. However, we may be biased in how we perceive ourselves. The author defined “Self-Serving Bias” as the tendency to judge oneself in a positive manner even when the positive evaluation is not justified. When thinking about how this article on “Self-Serving Bias” is relevant to me, several things came to my mind. Based on my own experiences, “Self-Serving Bias” is something I have faced through my elementary and high school years. Coming from another country, it has been difficult for me to blend in, and for that reason I was afraid of going to school because bullies teased me, making fun of my accent, etc. I felt sad and …show more content…

I tried to be helpful to the bullies, and stopped telling on them, but things could not quite seem to work out. I came up with some solutions and purposed it to my family. The one solution would be to create a class to teach parents to recognize the effects of bullying and how they can resolve the issue. The class would encourage parents to ask their children about their school days. Parents could also go to their children’s schools and check on how they are doing academically. The second solution would be for schools to offer after-school programs on bullying in order to teach their students on the effect of bullying and how they can get help if needed. I feel if young adults have the opportunity to be a part of a program that can teach them the effects of bullying they will know how to respond to bullies in and outside of
