Mr. David Myers in “This Will Make You Smarter,” wrote an article called “Self-Serving Bias.” His ideas for writing this article were to illustrate the importance of how each of us thinks about ourselves and others. According to the author, we may not be fair or objective in some of our judgments. With respect to judging ourselves, we may be motivated to have a positive self-concept and high self-esteem. However, we may be biased in how we perceive ourselves. The author defined “Self-Serving Bias” as the tendency to judge oneself in a positive manner even when the positive evaluation is not justified. When thinking about how this article on “Self-Serving Bias” is relevant to me, several things came to my mind. Based on my own experiences, “Self-Serving Bias” is something I have faced through my elementary and high school years. I tried to be helpful to the bullies, and stopped telling on them, but things could not quite seem to work out. I came up with some solutions and purposed it to my family. The one solution would be to create a class to teach parents to recognize the effects of bullying and how they can resolve the issue. The class would encourage parents to ask their children about their school days. Parents could also go to their children’s schools and check on how they are doing academically. The second solution would be for schools to offer after-school programs on bullying in order to teach their students on the effect of bullying and how they can get help if needed. I feel if young adults have the opportunity to be a part of a program that can teach them the effects of bullying they will know how to respond to bullies in and outside of
To know how to prevent bullying, it’s important to note when these actions first become visible. It can be seen that bullying occurs most often in schools, then at work places. It is known that many schools stress and make efforts to stop bullying because younger kids are more susceptible to bullying. They have more difficulty defending themselves. However, this is not always the case. The teens who were involved in the shootings were bullied and decided to take revenge which led to the killing and injures of many people. Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. Although bullying continues to be an issue in our society, but mainly in schools, all we can do is keep educating kids on what is right and wrong, letting them know the consequences of their actions both to its victim and to themselves. Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. I strongly believe in order to combat bullying efficiently, is by starting with the bystanders and showing them in their view what it would be like to be the victim in a bullying situation and have them respond how they might want their friends, family, bystanders react and potentially help them. Bystanders react in three ways, watch because they are afraid, encourage the bully, or help the situation in many different ways. Bullying is a major life affecting issue that will be resolved one day and there are steps in achieving this goal which will begin with understanding and addressing the physiological thoughts in the bystanders and just remember, “treat others how you would want to be treated” many people forget this simple way of life. Less conflict results when one shows kindness and understanding. However don 't become ignorant to the issue because it will always be there, but you have the opportunity to make a difference wherever you might be in any situation.
