Reading Improves Brain Functions
Books open up a world full of imagination and creativity, and anyone one can experience exciting events from the past, present, and future through novels. The best scholars will say that one of the finest ways to enrich the mind is by reading. But is this claim based on fact? It is, but sadly 42% of college students won't read a book after graduating (Psychologytoday.com). This is depressing because not only is reading enjoyable; it also benefits memory, brain connectivity, knowledge, and social traits.
Every time a person exercises, his/her muscles get a little bit stronger, he/she can run faster, or doesn't get as tired from his/her workout. Something similar happens to the section of the brain that houses memory while reading. Whenever someone reads something in a book, that person's mind creates a new memory of that experience. This exercises memory muscles by forging new synapses and strengthening existing ones (Oprah.com). Some may think that the exact same thing will happen when listening to an audio book or watch a T.V. show, but that is not the case (Oprah.com). Reading is more neuro-biologically challenging because the brain has to process the words on the page, not just sounds or pictures on a screen (Oprah.com). This proves that there is no real substitute for picking up a good book. Now, this memory boost can help a lot down the road. Just like doing a crossword or Sudoku puzzle, reading keeps a mind sharp, which in turn supports the prevention of Alzheimer’s (Abcnews.go.com). In fact, studies show a connection between how many years of education somebody has and his or her chances of getting Alzheimer’s (Sciencedaily.com). People with a higher education, nine or more years, were 80%...

... of the most obvious ways to gain knowledge through reading. With thousands of topics waiting to be discovered, it is possible to learn so much by simply opening a book. If non-fiction doesn't sound appealing, try historical fiction. It may be a bit more action packed, and as stated in the title, based on historical events and facts.
Clearly, there are so many obvious ways reading can benefit and enrich someone’s mind. By improving memory and decreasing the risk for getting Alzheimer’s or by making readers feel more courageous in social situations. Books can help increase an understanding of others situations, and raise knowledge and intelligence at the same time. Reading is something everyone should continue to do for as long as they can. Go, visit the local Barnes and Nobles, or reread Harry Potter for the twenty seventh time, the benefits of doing so are endless.
In “The Closing of the American Book,” published in the New York Times Magazine, Andrew Solomon argues about how the decline of literary reading is a crisis in national health, politics, and education. Solomon relates the decline of reading with the rise of electronic media. He believes that watching television and sitting in front of a computer or a video screen instead of reading can cause the human brain to turn off, and lead to loneliness and depression. He also argues that with the decrease of reading rates, there will no longer be weapons against “absolutism” and “terrorism,” leading to the United States political failure in these battles. The last point Solomon makes is that there is no purpose behind America being one of the most literate societies in history if people eradicate this literacy, and so he encourages everyone to help the society by increasing reading rates and making it a “mainstay of community.” Solomon tries to show the importance of reading in brain development and he encourages people to read more by emphasizing the crisis and dangers behind the declination of reading.
In “Reading and Thought” editor Dwight MacDonald emphasizes that everything we read on a daily basis is worthless. MacDonald defines functional curiosity as a habit of reading rather than giving valuable information. MacDonald also alternates that people read too much material in a limited time frame; which results in hollow reading and thinking. Although, MacDonald encourages us to read more to become brilliant, I partially disagree with MacDonald’s argument because we waste time reading unimportant material, do not have time to reread and understand the material and we can now read our books electronically.
For me, reading as well as rereading, books such as Junie B Jones, Berenstain Bears, or the Harry Potter series, impacted my life immensely by increasing my vocabulary, developing my vital language skills and many more developmental skills. In the past, being literate meant beating kids in how many books I could read and being able to comprehend difficult vocabulary, but now being literate in the adult world means developing new and creative ideas or being able to prosper an opinion based on facts and previous knowledge.
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. These things are discussed in the essay “Staying Awake’’ by Ursula K. Le Guin who uses the NEA essays “To Read or Not to Read’’ and “Reading at Risk’’ to support her argument that there is a decline in the amount of time that we are spending on reading and our ability to understand what it is that we are reading.
I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. It is possible that I will learn more about society through literature than I ever will through personal experience. Having lived a safe, relatively sheltered life for only seventeen years, I don’t have much to offer in regards to worldly wisdom. Reading has opened doors to situations I will never encounter myself, giving me a better understanding of others and their situations. Through books, I’ve escaped from slavery, been tried for murder, and lived through the Cambodian genocide. I’ve been an immigrant, permanently disabled, and faced World War II death camps. Without books, I would be a significantly more close-minded person. My perception of the world has been more significantly impacted by the experiences I've gained through literature than those I've gained
When children are taught to read at an earlier age, their emotional and mental development is positively impacted. The exposure of literature to young children helps them become smarter and allows them to understand more about the world. They learn simple yet valuable lessons that allow them to make wiser decisions and display better behavior around others. Psychologist Raymond Mar held a study in 2010 on children who read books when they are younger. Mar’s results showed that reading boosted their “theory of mind” and understanding of people’s feelings. This shows that children can benefit when properly taught to read books at a younger age. It also aids children in school and increases their intellectual engagement. Kids can develop the skills to question the emotional and mental aspects of books when they start reading at a younger age. Overall, children can be greatly influenced when they read at a younger age and their mental and emotional development is affected by the positive impact of
Having reading sessions can also help the older children expand their vocabulary and have a better knowledge of the world around them. (Benedetti)
We go to school to learn and in our English classes we learn valuable skills like analyzing and understanding books. We need to be taught how to assess books so that we may further our education beyond the classroom. The lessons in high school gave me a foundation of understanding but I was able to further enjoy books and the knowledge I gain from them because I was taught how to learn as I read. Reading is scientifically proven to improve brain connectivity and cognition. Researchers at Emory University say, “there was a
In the article 10 Benefits of Reading, the author Lana Winter-Hebert of Lifehack.org explained why reading is a mental exercise and can improve your mental ability. My reading habits are fairly frequent. I read a lot of magazines and online articles, but I never miss out on a good novel. The atmosphere of a bookstore or library is so comfortable and that drives me to read more, too. I am currently reading two books; The Name of This Book is Secret and If I Should Die Before I Wake. Considering I am constantly reading as recreation or school-wise, I think I read enough.
Reading leave me a lot of good things, such as learning what is going on around the

Reading has been a part of my life from the second I was born. All throughout my childhood, my parents read to me, and I loved it. I grew up going to the library and being read to constantly. Especially in the years before Kindergarten, reading was my favorite thing to do. I grew up loving fairy tales and thriving on the knowledge that I could have any book I wanted, to be read to me that night. Having no siblings, my only examples were my parents, and they read constantly. Without a family that supported my love of reading throughout my childhood, I wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as I have and do now.
George R.R. Martin once said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one.” For centuries, books have transformed readers into someone else and transported them to different worlds. In my fourteen years, I have fought dragons, saved the world, and survived World War II. I have become others who were anywhere from a toddler to an adult. I have gone to wizarding school and a summer camp for demigods all because of books. Something magical happens when I open bound pages of words and begin to read. Books inspire me because they each open up a new world of experiences and feelings that will last with me forever.
Many students have a hard time when it comes to reading. There are many reading inventions that can help students out. Reading inventions are strategies that help students who are having trouble reading. The interventions are techniques that can be used to assist in one on ones with students or working in small groups to help students become a better reader. Hannah is a student who seems to be struggling with many independent reading assignments. There can be many reasons that Hannah is struggling with the independent reading assignments. One of the reasons that Hannah can be struggling with is reading comprehension while she is reading on her on. Reading comprehension is when students are able to read something, they are able to process it and they are able to understand what the text is saying. According to article Evidence-based early reading practices within a response to intervention system, it was mentioned that research strategies that can use to help reading comprehension can include of activating the student’s background knowledge of the text, the teacher can have questions that the student answer while reading the text, having students draw conclusions from the text, having
Nowadays, many people think reading is not necessary, since there are so many sources of information and types of entertainment, such as TV, cinema and the Internet. I believe they are wrong because reading is very beneficial in many ways.
