The Importance Of Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior. Behavior refers to anything an animal or person does, feels, or thinks (Kuther, (2012), p. 2). I chose to study psychology for a variety of reasons: it opens the door to a variety of careers, it can be rewarding, psychology is a topic that interests me, and it’s a way to impact peoples lives for the better. One great reason is that as you major in psychology, it gives the opportunity for more knowledge and can be applied in a variety of employment settings (Wegnek and Buskist, (2012), p.1). At each stage faculty provide less and less help but students must master all the skills in the previous stage in order to succeed in a psychology major, By the last stage you should be able to master all six skills of the critical thinking skills, understand the information, then be able to analyze the information, learn to apply it, and finally you can create original knowledge. In order to do this, you must master all the previous skills (Appleby, 2003, p. 5). Also, its important to improve in knowledge of human behavior, research methods, critical thinking, computer literacy, and adaptability (Kuther, (2012), p,20). These characteristics have made me realize I must become aware of the “big picture” in order to better understand value in the courses I am/will take.
