The prenatal stage, the time frame from conception to birth, is the most important stage of development because this stage sets the foundation for a healthy pregnancy, healthy baby and ultimately a healthy life. The prenatal stage is the first stage of life and it is also where the most important developments occur. It is during this time that all the functions of the body begin to form. Functions such as the heart, heartbeat, lungs, organs, legs, arms, whether the toes and fingers form, all the internal systems, brain health and so much more are dependent on the quality of prenatal care. Prenatal or antenatal development is the process in which a human embryo and later fetus develops during pregnancy, from fertilization until birth. During …show more content…
The most common diseases during this period are AIDS, Herpes, rubella, and a condition known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. These diseases are due to the lifestyle and care, prenatal care the mother receives. Also, some diseases are due to the use of drugs. For example, the use of substances by the mother can have overwhelming effects to the fetus, effects that can be detrimental to the baby. Smoking is linked to low birth weight, which can also result in a weakened immune system, poor respiration, and neural impairment. Alcohol use can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, which is linked to heart problems, body malformations, and mental retardation. Secondly, there are many maternal diseases that can negatively impact the fetus, including herpes, rubella, and AIDS. For example, Herpes virus is one of the most common maternal disease and can be transmitted to the fetus, leading to deafness, brain swelling, or mental retardation. Lastly, the female should be very careful with what she eats, extremely careful with which drugs are ingested, she should always be aware of her environment so that the fetus will not be infected with any maternal diseases. These affect the child’s overall health and wellbeing whether it’s good or bad, that alone is why the prenatal stage is the most important …show more content…
For example, Autism. Autism is a developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in the areas of social skills and learning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010, autism is the most common of prenatal disorders. As of 2010, according to The National Institute of Mental Health, the U.S has a percentage of 13.6 when it comes to mental and behavioral disorders. Also, there are Brain Malformations, also known as, Cephalic disorders. Most brain malformations begin in the prenatal period of development. Something damages the developing nervous system or causes it to develop abnormally. At times it's a genetic problem. In other cases, exposure to certain medicines, infections, or radiation during pregnancy interferes with brain development. Parts of the brain may be missing, abnormally small or large, or not fully developed. These disorders affect the child’s learning ability and overall intelligence
The five environmental influences that I would use to publicize in a campaign to promote healthy prenatal development would be: the effects of the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, some medications, and diseases. These environmental influences are the most common problems that women who are pregnant face today. Most lack the knowledge of how and why these influences are harmful to their unborn child, and if needed how they can seek treatment.
Although there are many factors that affect the development of the fetus, research on the specific effects of prenatal maternal stress and the resulting negative outcomes for the development of the fetus will be reviewed. While there is knowledge of these harmful effects in scientific and medical communities, researchers are still in the midst of discovering the results of these negative effects on human development. An overall review of the literature suggests that this topic is still relatively new in research as most of the articles make note that despite the amount of current research studies, there are still many unanswered questions.
Based on my knowledge about prenatal development and childbirth I expected the women to answer the way they did. Development happens rapidly during the prenatal period, which is the time between conception and birth. Prenatal development is normally divided into three stages: the germinal stage, the embryonic stage, and the fetal stage.
...mester is very important to not drink it can affect a lot of issues for the baby such as miscarriage. A still birth is also an effect from drinking the baby can be considered bad to the body if the entire toxin from the alcohol gets to the baby and the body will consider it bad. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the most common syndrome in the u.s now it can cause stubbornness and anger issues down the line. Birth weight, is not a big main concern as much as the others. Until the baby is born less than 5lbs it’s a problem. Preterm labor there is a lot of symptom that can pop up before you get that far to prevent preterm labor. The longer the baby is inside the better. Lastly brain damage is heart breaking. The brain is very sensitive to all those toxic put into the mother body that it can eat the baby brain up. It will cause a lot of problems for the baby in the long run.
It has been proven that a child’s early years are the peak at which the mind can bend and shape, creating the foundation for a life. We know now that even before birth, the mind is a delicate matter that if improperly taken care of could alter a person’s entire life. Nourishment and stimulation before and after the birth of a child mold’s the brain in its most malleable state. Medical and scientific institutes paired with parenting information organizations have made information readily available for parents, childcare providers, and students to advise them of the importance of childhood brain development. This information is not only critical for the child, but for the person they will become in the future.
1.1 Describe, in-depth, stages of development from conception to birth in groups of 4 weeks i.e. 0-4, 4-8, 8-12...36-40 weeks.
Health complications can occur during pregnancy with the woman or the fetus. During pregnancy, a woman can have an ectopic pregnancy, which is where the fetus develops outside of the uterus. While giving birth, a woman can risk her life if she encountered any difficulties. A fetus can develop birth defects, for instance, down syndrome, as well as diseases and infections. If a fetus’ has a life-threatening illness, a mother may decide to end the pregnancy so the baby does not have a painful life. However, a doctor may say the baby may have birth defects, but the baby can be born perfectly
Baby’s take an average of 38-40 weeks to fully develop and prepare for birth. This time period of approximately nine months is broken down into 3 periods in which the baby spends growing from a tiny mass of cells into a functional, healthy, bouncing baby. If all goes smoothly the birth of a baby, including labor time could take between 4-8 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less. There are many factors that can affect the baby’s growth and development, called teratogens, but overall baby will slowly grow and develop until he or she is prepared to enter into the world.
This is the embryonic period, which occurs three weeks after conception and lasts until the eighth week. During the fourth week, the shape of the head begins to form, along with the formation of the eyes, mouth, nose, and mouth. Through the fifth and eighth week the lower body develops, as the legs and arms appear. After the embryonic stage, the fetal stage begins, which is during the ninth week through birth, where the fetus has a physical appearance distinctive to human features compared to when it was an embryo. At birth, one of the earliest signs of motor development is its first reflexes as a newborn coming out the mother’s womb. Newborns reflexes are not learned, rather they are born with these reflexes and act instinctively to protect itself in its first few months of life. At this point both the physical and motor development is starting to develop naturally at the same
Being healthy while pregnant is an important factor when considering carrying a baby. The risk of dying by giving birth is higher than having an abortion (ProCon). Not at women can handle the negatives of giving birth and survive through them. If a woman is aware that should is not healthy enough to give birth, she
This process is called conception, the female is now officially two weeks pregnant and the fertilized egg is called a zygote. Let’s move on to pregnancy. Pregnancy is a state in which a woman carries a fertilized egg inside her body, it usually lasts up to 40 weeks, and it is divided into three trimesters, each lasting three months. The first month. The embryo is about a third of an inch long. The head, trunk, and the beginnings of the arms and legs have started to develop. By this month, the embryo starts to receive nutrients and releases waste through the umbilical cord and placenta. The heart also starts to beat. The second month. The heart is now pumping and the nervous system, including the brain and the spinal cord begins to develop. The fetus is 1 in 2.5cm now and has developed cartilage skeleton. The arms, legs, facial features and other major organs begin to appear. The third month. The fetus has grown up to 4 in 10cm and weighs a little more than an ounce. The major blood vessels are almost completed and the face starts to show up more. The kidneys and the 4 chambers of the heart are now complete. The fourth month. The fetus is now 4 oz of 112g and can kick and swallow. The
The prenatal period takes place in the first two weeks of conception. Heredity and environmental influences (which are often negative) are also developed during this stage. At this stage the organism is more susceptible to these influences, than during any other period. Infancy is the next stage, various changes start to occur and attachments start to form. Coordination, sensory and motor skills start to develop, as well as the expression of feelings and emotions.
In addition, another developmental effect is autism. Autism is a disorder that affects brain development (Autism Speaks). This disorder is has some major symptoms like mood disorders, social challenges, anxiety, and even language impairment (Autism Speaks). Among of these disorders the most common is down syndrome. Down Syndrome is a type of disorder when someone is born with an extra chromosome (Nemours).
Focusing on the development of a fetus, there is a lot to acknowledge. The reproduction system is detailed and pregnancy can be compromised easily. As a female who may eventually want to reproduce, the topic of pregnancy is generally interesting. There is a vast amount of information based on pregnancy and fetal development, however I would like to focus on birth defects. Birth defects can arise from several factors such as genetics, teratogens, and prenatal infections.
Child development can be negatively influenced by risk factors, including hereditary and environmental factors. Some pre-natal environment factors related to mothers during pregnancy include: nutritional deficiencies, diabetic mother, drug and alcohol use, and more. Some post-natal environment factors include: socio-economic status of the family, child’s nutrition, family structure, child’s emotions, and more. Malnutrition, maternal depression, and maternal substance abuse are three of these factors which have received particular attention by researchers, however, many more factors have been
