Literature is the effective form of a culture. Poetry encompasses the effectiveness of literature if it didn’t then communication teachers wouldn’t do things like have you look outside the window and write a poem about what you see in class? Poetry helps you step outside the box be more creative it allows you the chance to allow you imagination to. Also spoken word does as well which is another form of poetry that I will discuss later in the essay. Poetry was very relevant during times like ancient Greece .If you mention the names Homer, Shakespeare and Sophocles then you will notice people are mostly familiar with those poets. Although the work they created was long ago they are famous figures in history. Today in the 21st century
And etc. literature was popular throughout society. Everyone knew about literature and they wanted to know about it. More and more poets became known and famous for there work it was growing and it continued to give birth to generation after generation. Although poets and writers are still forming even today in the 21st century its not receiving the same recognition because technology has improved as well. I am a artist and I am one of the 21st century, but my importance in none like Mya Angelo or Langston Hughes. Nobody sees the value, how very sad to see no value in poetry. It may be hard for some to write poetry. It can also be very difficult for many people to understand. The value however is still there. In the early 1800s and so on poetry was a mainstream, but now its diminished. The world diminishes it because technology advances so nobody no longer listens to writers at a spoken word events they go to YouTube and listen to poetry if they are interested and not many are interested if they are than they are then they are considered
There is, in fact, little coverage of poetry or poets in the general press. From 1984 until this year the National Book Awards dropped poetry as a category. Leading critics rarely review it. In fact, virtually no one reviews it except other poets. Almost no popular collections of contemporary poetry are available except those, like the Norton Anthology, targeting an academic audience. It seems, in short, as if the large audience that still exists for quality fiction hardly notices poetry. A reader familiar with the novels of Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike, or John Barth may not even recognize the names of Gwendolyn Brooks, Gary Snyder, and W. D.
The Reconstruction was the process of trying to rebuild the South after the devastating effect of the Civil War. Some interesting facts during the Civil War were first, in 1869 the first college football game took place, second, African American universities became a reality, and last, in 1870, Hiram Revels was elected the first black Senator. In the end, Reconstruction died, but we’ve all been asking the same thing; North or South: Who killed the Reconstruction? Answering this question, I believe the North killed the Reconstruction by a lack of focus on it, the racism on African Americans, and being sick of assisting the South.
Literature throughout history has evolved due to events occurring during those times. It has changed in a deductive fashion going from creator to creation. In the early times Native Americans wrote myths of how the world had been created, next Puritans wrote of the drama in their communities and how they affected with each other, finally, transcendentalism focused on a singular person's ideas and point of view. It is important to be able to understand all levels of life from broad ideas to a singular person. Understanding not only how the world works but also how to get along with others and who you are as a person is crucial in this society. Literature from many time periods all attribute to these subjects. Literature
Hypothesis: Poetry still has a massive capability of evoking strong emotions and visions on the everyday person reminding the what life was/is going to be like.
Writing poetry can be a long and relentless task. There are several points that may arouse concerns when an author writes poems. One of those concerns would be criticism. In the world of literary arts, criticism can be found everywhere. The individual does not have to be a scholar, in order to be a critic. Critics surround authors in many different directions, and they are among a diverse group. These facts alone would be a reason for authors to be very skeptical of their works. Moreover, that reason alone would cause an author to be very protective of the use of such works. Authors tend to have concerns about cultural views as well. Culture values were at a very high peak during Anne Bradstreet’s time. Those specific concerns can very easily peak an author’s insecurities. Anne Bradstreet exemplified insecure thoughts towards her poetry because of society and the culture of the 1600s. Bradstreet’s insecurities made her a target among the male writers. During her time, women were not common
This is sheer proof of the potential the written word holds. This genre is vastly successful in creating imagery, exploring ones ideas and expressing emotion in both its raw and refined forms, from Bukowski's unembellished, yet irresistably poignant lexis in the poem "Bluebird" to T.S. Eliot's absurdly enchanting bleakness of "The Waste Land". I enjoy Emily Dickinson's works such as "I felt a funeral, in my brain" as they beautifully capture the depths of human thought and emotion. This has also encouraged me to write my own poetic works, experimenting with the many forms, themes and ideals that a poem can encompass whilst exploring my own creativity and
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
Poets wanted to be known for their unique style and way of writing, giving themselves more of an edge over other poets, to stand out. That is what the Modernism era was all about, poets giving their work more of themselves. Robert Hayden wrote most...
James Weldon Johnson, Countee Cullen, Claude Mckay, Jean (Eugene) Tommer, Langston Hughes, Sterling Brown, Robert Hayden, and Gwendolyn Brooks, again, all were very excellent Poets who took pride In what they did, for the people they did it for and for themselves.
Yet a term as broad as "poetry" is not so easily quantified as to simply attribute physical characteristics to it and let all writing either fall into or out of that category. Poetry is determined by the effect upon the reader. It is an individual opinion, and thus defined by the collected (individual) reactions.
Literature has had a major impact on society, and, also our history. Literature has reformed and shaped civilizations, changed political systems, and has exposed injustices (3). Our literature has changed and developed as we have, keeping up with our society. “...literature is crucial for the advancement of society (3).” With literary works, we can convince others to view things a certain way, share our opinions, and more. Literature is greatly intertwined with our society and everyday lives, and they would not be the same without it. Literature plays an irreplaceable role in our
Marianne Moore’s most popular poem, which is also her most ambiguously titled poem, is called “Poetry.” In this poem Moore decisively strayed away from her conventional writing style of contrariety and the bizarre, but it does seem to share other characteristics of her earlier poetry. Moore’s apparent purpose in writing “Poetry” was to criticize the present social outlook on the entire idea of poetry, to come up with a universal definition of poetry and of genuine poetry, and ultimately to convince those who dislike poetry of its benefits. She attempted to present this criticism and definition by means of blatant irony, and even though she desperately wants to describe the seemingly trivial activity of poetry, she fails to provide a definition that is not caught up in the negative.
Poetry can be easily separated from other pieces of literature. Often when I think of poetry I think of someone expressing themselves in a particularly imaginative way. Even though prose may also be writing which expresses itself, it is written down in a totally different manner. “Disillusionment of Ten O’Clock” by Wallace Stevens and “The Lamb” by William Blake are two poems which contain key attributes such as symbolism, imagery, rhyme, and rhythm which are part of what differentiates a poem from other works of literature.
In conclusion, I feel poets mainly write poems to express feelings, thoughts, and messages to the world. It’s an easy approach for them to use this writing technique as a way to articulate different aspects which could be improved in this world. I think what attracts people to poetry is writing which relates to each person in their everyday life no matter how it could be portrayed by. For some people poetry could be a relaxing thing or it could be something which cheers someone up, but people look to poetry to get a deeper thinking in life rather than a simpler thinking. This is clearly evident through authors, William Wordsworth and William Blake, and their poems “The World is too Much with Us” and “The Tyger.” Both poems related to one another one way or another, and they depicted different messages and themes which do relate to real life situations.
When we first started the poetry unit, I felt that I would hate reading and creating poetry. When I heard we had to read poetry I was very disappointed. Every other year we did poetry units, I hated it. I hated every part of it. I dreaded reading poetry and answering the questions. I mostly felt this way because I am a factual person. I always have to have one right answer. I do not like when there are more than one answer choices that are correct. Poetry always has more than one interpretation. This year, however, hearing poetry and writing my own poetry has changed my opinion on poetry. Although I still hate answering questions on the poems I love to listen to poetry and write my own poetry. But, even when you read the poems that I write they are very straightforward and there are usually no other ways to interpret it.
Literature allows reflection. It helps us to shape our own thoughts. It builds on rich histories of thought and expression. Literature represents and explores the ways in which the world is viewed and experienced by people in that society.
