Personal freedom is like a young child calling a person ugly and the parents laughing saying that the child does not know any better to explain personal freedom is saying how a person feels an express an opinion is very important for a countries individuality. Because Americans have the personal freedom to express feelings although are still in a way Limited in what can be said meaning never fully able to Express said emotions. According to the Collins Dictionary, “freedom” is defined as “the state of being allowed to do what you want to do”(“freedom”). The definition of freedom is simple, but make yourself free is not easy. Concerning about some common cases which will take away your freedom, such as a time-cost high education attainment. In this essay, I shall persuade that everyone should try his or her best to insist on pursuing freedom. For the individual, it appears that only if you have your personal freedom, can you have a dream; for a country, it seems that only if the country is free, can the country develop; for mankind, it looks like that only if people has their own pursuit of freedom, can their thoughts evolve.
In Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Why We Can’t Wait, Martin Luther King, Jr. describes the harsh treatment of Negroes while they were fighting for their freedom. Negroes were not allowed to vote, sit at lunch counters with whites, use the same restrooms as whites, or even ride next to whites on buses. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the Birmingham movement in efforts to gain freedom for the Negroes. The Birmingham movement was successful because it gained freedom for blacks, desegregated many places, and it opened up many job opportunities for blacks that they never had before.
The point of the Civil Rights movement is to uncover the tensions that were being disguised as what was made to seem like reality and force the opposing community to take action on such issues. King agreed that negotiation would be more ideal, but without dramatic action on the issue, no consideration would have been taken, this is the purpose of direct action. As stated by King, “I have earnestly opposed violent tension, but there is a type of constructive, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth.” (King, 1963) In other words, King wants to help by protesting in ways that will not demoralize the Negroes.
The most valuable aspects of individualism is the freedom to speak and to express are feelings that is what makes us human, as President Robert F. Kennedy stated in his Day of Affirmation Address that “…the first element of this individual liberty is the freedom of speech: the right to express and communicate ideas, to set oneself apart from the dumb beasts of field and forest…” My family came to the U.S. because of the promises of freedom. When we were in India we could not speak ill of the politics that were corrupt because if we did there would be chaos and riots. As we came to America we found that we did not have to look constantly behind are backs when we criticized the government until the Patriot Act was put into place but now we can not express are feelings due to the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act fails to secure American liberties but that the act exposes the weakness in the U.S. government. The act encourages government corruption, secrecy, fraud and discrimination and violates are constitution. The government uses the national security as a pretense for violating our constitutional rights; for example the freedom of speech and our privacy (Day).
The notion of freedom can mean different things to different people, it all depends on the level of freedom you have over your own life. It could be freedom of speech, religious freedom, freedom of the press or even freedom of economy. However you see it they all seem to describe a sense of personal freedom, which no doubt everybody wants, but only some seem to have. No other democratic society in the world allows personal freedoms to the degree of the United States of America. They have been able to establish a set of legal rules that systematically protects all forms of freedom. Freedom remains the lone basis for American society as we know it. Without freedom the great nation of America would have never been created. Just as how the United States is seen by the American population to symbolise freedom and independence, it also stands to mean the same thing to many other countries around the world. Having your own freedom and the ability to exercise your rights in your own country, is something that is synonymous with the Unites States.
Many believe that freedom is being able to do and say whatever you'd like without consequences. In ways this may be true but, when we say or do things that are against rules or that challenge society we might find ourselves in trouble. But if we don't challenge society or anything else for that matter we find ourselves stuck without change. Leading to the idea that the true meaning of freedom is being able to speak up for what you believe in; Whether it results in punishment or not. If that's what you believe in then preach it all you want. Our government might have the authority to take away our freedom by locking us away or finding another form of punishment. Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. In America there is numerous of choices that someone may make on a daily basis. If someone were allowed to make their own choices and were being told what to do; then they would not be free. When someone is allowed to speak when they want to, and say what they want; such as their opinion or view of something. Freedom remains the sole basis for American society as we know it. Without freedom the great nation of America would have never been founded. To understand the true principles of freedom, one must understand the scope of the word. Philosophical freedom encompasses the ability to make choices without restraints, while political freedom is the state of being free rather than in physical confinement. African Americans waited three hundred and forty years for their rights, but nothing ever happened. King states that the people should unite in order to get something done. They can not rely on the government to free African Americans from the oppression. A quote that supports this is, “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”(paragraph 12) What this means is the victims who are being oppressed must fight for their freedom. The reason that the definition from the Oxford English Dictionary was given prior, was due to its broadness; making it a more well-suited definition to describe the concept of freedom. In analyzing freedom, similar words will be discussed, freedom’s characteristics described, and examples given, in order to illustrate the word and some of its many uses.
Nearly three centuries ago, black men and women from Africa were brought to America and put into slavery. They were treated more cruelly in the United States than in any other country that had practiced slavery. African Americans didn’t gain their freedom until after the Civil War, nearly one-hundred years later. Even though African Americans were freed and the constitution was amended to guarantee racial equality, they were still not treated the same as whites and were thought of as second class citizens. One man had the right idea on how to change America, Martin Luther King Jr. had the best philosophy for advancing civil rights, he preached nonviolence to express the need for change in America and he united both African Americans and whites together to fight for economic and social equality.
These days there are many people who come to our country to have more freedom than what they have. I think if you have freedom enjoy , it have a good time do not waste it doing plain old and stupid things. Just go and use your freedom and not abuse your freedom. For many Americans, freedom is the most important aspect of our nation’s foundation. Freedom is the principle that our country was founded on. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm , the animal’s quest for freedom ultimately leads them to their demise. For someone to really be free there is a thin line that must not be crossed. Freedom requires a delicate balance although that balance can be easily upset by many things, such as power hungry leaders, blind and uneducated followers, and overpowered controlling governments.
Human freedom is a complex idea that integrates personal liberty and character. To define human freedom we would have to go to places in time when people were oppressed.
