Newman Smith like many other high schools and colleges has an honor code. THis code gives students a guideline on how to live like a Trojan. Nothing in life is perfect, and so there are some issues with the honor code. Newman Should revise its honor code because it was written 23 years ago, most students don't even know that it exist, and students will more likely follow rules they help make.
The honor code of Newman Smith was written in 1994. Most of the class of 2012 were just being brought into the world. Student now of days don't feel connected to it at all. At the University of Virginia, Students have to write,” On my honor as a student, I have neither given nor received aid on this assignment/exam”. Students have been following that rule since 1842. The thing is that college are more mature and serious about their education, while some high school students are the complete opposite. Although there are some high school students who do have a similar mindset as college students, but sadly they do not make up the majority. Most spend their time in high school not taking it seriously. Revising the honor code would modernize it and make it more relatable to the students.

Don't see it in the hallways or in teachers classrooms. Now there are there are a few teachers who have it hanging up somewhere, but they never draw any attention to it. In a study done in 2008 at a small public university show that 42% of students and alumni did not know the range of sanctions that can occur. Which means almost half the colleges students did not know what all they would be punished for. Now few teachers do put the honor code in their syllabus but they don't go over it. If Newman Smith’s honor code was revised, the new rules would have to be presented. Once it was presented to the whole school, almost every student would know about
it. At Lawrence Academy in 1998, a new honor code was written for the school. Many students, including members of the schools Senate, were quick to criticize it. The new honor code was written without student input. Many colleges have reduced cheating by encouraging students developing community standards on academic dishonesty and ensuring their subsequent acceptance by the larger student community. Colleges have found success in using student help with their honor codes. Yes students should follow reasonable rules no matter who wrote them, but if that's the case you can say the same thing about the 13 colonies. The British were making rules for the colonies without their input. Which caused them to rebel against Parliament and eventually create the country we live in today. Allowing students to help revise the honor code will also make them feel obligated to help enforce it. The revision of Newman Smith’s honor code will make the school a better place. Many schools have had success with student approved honor codes. We could also share in that success but we have to be willing to change and experiment new things. If not the school will continue on the bad path it has been on these last couple years.
n my violation of the Aggie Code of Honor, I took the risk of taking an unfair advantage over my classmates to maximize an exam grade. My ultimate failure was deciding to cheat for the betterment of my grade over studying harder and working for my own grade. This code of chivalry all came from King Arthur. It all began with Arthur’s father, Uther. Uther gets a sword from the Lady of the Lake and this sword is named Excalibur. Later on in the battle among England, Merlin (the magician) grants Uther his wish in return for whatever he asked for. As for this wish, Uther slept with Egrain’s wife as he asked and impregnated her with his soon to be son, Arthur. When Arthur was born Merlin came for what he was promised, and took Arthur away with him, raising him. What Merlin did know was that Uther’s son was soon to be the new King of England. This soon to be king, Arthur, must become a knight and granted the right to be king. However; there are three examples of chivalry from the two texts, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Morte d’Arthur" are courage, honor and to protect the queen and all women.
The case under review occurred in the city of Newton against a backdrop of economic decline, political disenchantment, and a widening racial divide. A Newton High School senior,Sheila Allison, is accused by her teacher of plagiarizing a book review. Mrs. Durnitz, the teacher, reported to the school principal that Sheila admitted to taking material from the web but claimed she did not know that doing so constituted plagiarism. The district’s policy states that students found guilty of plagiarism must receive a failing grade and repeat the course. Mrs. Durnitz feels that Sheila, having a copy of the student handbook in which plagiarism is discussed, should have known that what she did violated the policy. The teacher also believes that the policy, drafted by the teachers who teach honors classes and approved by the administration, must be followed to the letter despite any extenuating circumstances.

However, this may stem from a lack of enforcement of the rules. Even at the most prestigious schools, such as Harvard University, students are not upholding the rules implemented: “The possibility that 125 Harvard students ‘improperly collaborated’ on an exam in the spring has galvanized … discussion about … honor codes” (Source: C). In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. After some research on other university honor codes, the processes of honor codes are really similar to the University of Colorado at Boulder. In fact, Colorado State University (CSU) have a similar honor code pledge as us, which is “I have not given, receive, or used any unauthorized assistance. ” Comparing the discipline process between here and CSU and Stanford University, they are looks identical but written differently. However, the discipline from Stanford are harsher than here an CSU. The Code of Ethic for the Education Profession does not just involve the schools staff with its student but with everyone that is involved with the school. A quote from the first code “educator values the worth and dignity of every person” (1), to be an educator one has to keep their colleges, boss, parents, student and community in mind. To be in the education profession one is signing up to be a trustworthy, knowledgeable, devoted, and understanding individual. They must guarantee equal opportunities for everyone. Their primary concern is to their students learning and potential. One has to “sustain the highest degree of ethical conduct” (1).
An honor code is necessary in the school life. I believe it makes a difference in students; it provides a foundation for them. If students do not have an honor code, they will not know what is right from wrong. When students do something wrong they cannot be punished or corrected because they have no rules. Students are the way they are because of how they behave while growing up, so adding an honor code that students can follow should influence them greatly. Honor codes also makes students establish a sense of professionalism and can divide the students who deserve to get good grades and the kids who do not deserve to get good grades.

For the majority of the students, those moving on to community colleges or lesser universities, there will be a set of classes that will teach the same subjects as the honor courses, just not in as much detail. There will also be a third tier of classes below this one which will serve the needs of those students who are not academically up to standard. The students in the lower classes will not be allowed to "slack off" and graduate with a sub-par education. Their classes will be more rigorous than the average classes in an effort to bring the students back up to the standard.
