Music is a way of expressing yourself and letting emotion out. Music has always been a part of my life. It’s all around with no escape; from advertisement jingles on television to the radio stations at work, I’m always close to music. I even have over one thousand songs on my phone at the ready. Music has enlisted many emotions and thoughts for me but most importantly, memories. My music life started with nursery rhymes and will continue to the last song I have the privilege of listening to before I go. I have developed a playlist that describes many influential periods in my life. My playlist varies immensely across multiple genres and time periods yet still applies to my life. When I was four, my mom moved us to New York all the way from …show more content…
My anthem in middle school was “Show Goes On” by Lupe Fiasco. My brother introduced me to the song and told me to just listen to the lyrics, nothing else and I loved it from the beginning. He had gone through the same hardships I had since he was two years my senior. He knew this song would resonate with me as it did for him. It became my fight song with its inspiring words and upbeat melody. It was the first rap song I could keep up with and I was proud. My favorite line is ”Let em’ know you’re there/ that you’re struggling, survin’/ that you gon’ preserve” (Fiasco). My family came a long way to where we are now. We had nothing at one point, living in shelters or staying with family. It was a low point in our lives but to look back from where we are now gives me hope and this song represents that. I can move forward with my life and not let my past define me. I was able to relate to Fiasco’s lyrics and it let made me realize that there are more people out there who are trying to make it through the hard times like I had. They say music can speak to a person and in that moment, listening to “Show Goes On” for the first time, I believed that it
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
Music education is important for several different reasons. Music is a very valuable resource for students and teachers alike. Research has shown that musical study improves a child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, as well as spatial reasoning skills (VH1, 2003, para4). Music helps students to achieve in areas of intelligence. “Feis, Revecz, the Pannenborgs, Miller, and others are unanimous in finding that musicality and high intelligence go together” (Mursell & Glenn, 1931, p. 20). Studies have shown that preschool children taught with music and songs have an average 10 to 20 points over those without, and by the age of 15 have higher reading and math skills. Another study showed that students that had taken a music appreciation class scored 46 points higher on the math portion of the SAT, and students who had music performance experiences scored 39 points higher than students without any music experience (Harvey, 1997, para13). Music impacts most other areas of learning. “The area holding the greatest prospects for transfer from music appears to be language arts.” (Hoffer, 1983, p. 46) It has been said that music helps concentration during reading. Music is an affective memory aide, because of its use of rhythm, rhyme and melody. Music for young children helps them to learn language because of the rhythms and patterns involved in learning the songs. The involvement of music in education can help to develop oral language skills, listening skills, and an increased vocabulary. Music can help the comprehension of language and basic facts (Dobbs, 1990, 341, 342).
With so many different cultures, races, religions, personalities, etc., it’s surprising how many fundamental things humans share. Music intertwines us all with its diversity and the effect it has on us. Whether you’re looking to rock out in a dance party, get a good workout in, sleep soundly, study hard, recover from a depressive state, or get the thrill of a super scary horror movie, music is there. Although listening to music is thought to be solely a source of entertainment, it can be used to improve almost all aspects of our everyday life.
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
Throughout my life, music has always been a major influence. It has the power to change my mood when I'm feeling down, but the thing I find most intriguing about music is that it doesn't always end up improving your mood: like all forms of art, it imitates life, which is not always portrayed in a positive light. The musicians that I admire most have the versatility to induce several different emotional responses in the same piece. This quality is present in most of the wide variety of music I listen to, from Russian composer Dmiti Shostakovich, to Chicago jazz band Tortoise, to California pop/rock sextet Mr. Bungle.
Music is the third most important thing to me in life outside of god and my mom. Music keeps me balanced. Every since I was a baby music was played around me. Jazz was always played around me to soothe me. There would be times when I would be really hyper acting like I couldn't sleep, my mom would put on some jazz and I would be fine. A lot of times I can have a long chore and I say to my self how can I accomplish this, Knowing it will take me forever. So I'll put on some jazz music and in twenty-five minutes I'm finished.
A person can do more than just dance to music; they clean, laugh, sing, cry, and make some of the greatest memories while enjoying music. Music can take us back in time to past memories, whether they are good or bad. It can make us think of different phases of our life. Just hearing one song can take us back years. It can make us think of a certain person at a particular part in time. The words and lyrics in songs have a way of relating to some people. (White) (Lyon, Suzanne)
If you ever want to learn about a person, you can just ask them what type of music they like, and that can tell you a lot about that person. Songs like “The National Anthem” tell a story about our country, but it is often taken for granted and not given the respect it deserves. It is not the individual’s fault if they do not know the meaning. That is when research comes to. There is so much music in the world that has great meaning and history behind it that we can learn from.
Music has always been a big part of my life. Music is not just a bunch of melodies, rhythms, and vibrant sounds. It is a comfort to me. The lyrics of a song challenge my intellect and the rhythms and beats affect my emotions. Music understands me when people don’t. At times it takes me back to an event in my life or even in history. Both consciously and subconsciously my mind remembers the emotions that are attached to a certain song. It can make me feel on top of the world or the complete opposite; music can change the atmosphere and also set the mood. Music has power over my human soul. It soothes it. I cannot imagine not having music to listen to. It is a powerful force and my love for it is incredible.
Since I was growing up music has being impacting my life. The music has helped me develop my identity throughout my life because for some reason every time something happens in my life, there is some song that fits perfectly in my situation and I do not stop listening to that song until I feel better or the situation is over. The music is related depending on the situation that I am going through in my life, whether it is good or bad because if the situation is good I will probably feel even better listen a song that fits my situation, but if do not feeling good the song I probably choose is one also fits my situation making me felt more sad. I love it listen to music depending how I feel because it makes me feel understood by someone else
I have been told that music is an escape from everyday pains and suffering: it’s an outlet for extra pent up emotion. People tend to feel strong connections with musicians because they sing and perform the very thing that sums up their innermost feelings. For me, music was exactly that, and so much more. In a previous paper, I wrote about my last day living in Appleton, Wisconsin. This story picks up just a few days prior to that day, in a little recording studio in the heart of downtown Appleton.
Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
In this writing assignment, I will focus on defining the meaning of music. By giving the meaning of music I will also express how the music will and can benefit a young child. I will also give my thoughts about the web site and how music, benefits to our young children. I will also address the different instruments and different sounds these instruments make in many different songs. I will address how creativity comes to play with music in the classroom.
Music is an essential part of life because of the expression it allows people to have, its entertainment, and its therapeutic ways for the world.
Through music we are able to comprehend someone’s personality, their views, their culture, and who they are as an overall person. The music you listen to is a reflection of who you are and your own personal thoughts. As I reflect on the music I listen to I came to the conclusion that I gravitate towards songs that depict the emotions we feel through lyrics while being able to relate it to my own personal experiences.
