Music education is more than just a subject in a school, its a science class, a math class, an english class, of course it can be a history class, and even a physical education class. Music takes all of the core school subjects and combines them all into one subject that can be understood anywhere in the world at any given moment. Music is a science because there are special elements that it takes to create a symphony that could quite possibly taken three long years to compose and produce. Music is math all because you have to know how to count a certain number of measures of rest, know how to count the time that the song could be written in and many many more other variations of counting time and for keeping time. Music is an english through these same concepts. You have to know how to properly format a musical composition, how to speak through it without sounding like you are musically illiterate, and even how to talk about a musical idea properly. History, oh how we have always loved to sit through our middle or high school history class; learn about the beginning of cavemen times, about the American Revolution, and even more recent as the devastating and tragic story around September 11, 2001. History involving music has been dated back to around 3,000 years before the Birth of Christ. Some of the very first documented sheets of music date back around the First Dynasty in Egypt, between 3200 and 3600 B.C. (N.A., "How far…by man?"). There is an endless supply of information, resources, and topics concerning musical history. Last but especially not least, whether you want to believe it or not, yes music can be considered a physical education course. I had asked these individuals three big questions that I could think of, the first question was what kind of problems did it help you get though? The first friend said "It helped me through the death of a loved one (grandpa and my cousin Josh." My second friend stated "It has helped me through almost everything, from break ups to the loss of a loved one." Last but not least the third friend said "It has helped me get through and over a relationship that ended." The second question that I had asked this group was what types of music did they listen to when getting through their situation? First friend said, "Mostly country or churchy type of music." Second friend says that "Country, country, country. Mostly Scotty McCreery." Third friend claims "I listen to country music mostly but sometimes a little bit of Daughtry." The final question that I had asked this group was how quickly did it help them to cope with the situation? Friend number one said "For a breakup it helped pretty quick but for the death of a loved one it helps to calm me down but getting over a loved one is very difficult it takes a long time but listening to music definitely helps, it lets you know that you are not the only one going through this situation." My second friend stated "slowly but over a good amount of time." And finally the third friend says that "I
Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and why people should learn music.
Few would argue against the idea that we educate ourselves and our society so that we have adequate means with which to understand and interact with elements of the world around us. Subjects such as mathematics, language, history, and the hard sciences are granted immediate and unquestioned legitimacy in our schools, and with good reason. We encounter each of these elements of our lives on a daily basis. We need to have an understanding of these disciplines in order to interact with them, otherwise they are meaningless to us. I submit that the same can be said for the fundamental concepts of music. Music is something that we encounter in our society every day. It surrounds us. Indeed it would be practically impossible to escape. Like so many other naturally occurring phenomena, a discipline has been developed over centuries to help us interact with music, and that discipline is what I and those of my profession are charged with teaching.

Of course, none of these perceptions are true. Two short months studying music on the college level has exploded these misconceptions. The study of music is a rigorous academic discipline which only gets more difficult as one progresses further into the curriculum. While our professors are understanding and helpful, we certainly are not coddled. Music majors quickly learn that hard work and long hours is the price of success in the world of music. The subject matter demands dedication and discipline.
It has been scientists' belief that music must have been present in the ancestral population prior to the dispersal of humans around the world. Therefore it is believed that music must have been in existence for at least 50,000 years, with the first music being invented in Africa and then evolving into becoming a fundamental constituent of human life. Any culture of music is influenced by the aspect of their culture, including their social and economic organization, climate, and access to technology. People express their emotions and ideas through their music. Music expresses the situations and how music is listened to and played. The attitude towards music players and composers varies between regions and periods of history. Music history" is the distinct subfield of musicology and history which studies music (particularly western art music) from a chronological perspective. ("History of Music")
Music is a basic part of everyday life. What makes music unique is its ability to create an emotional response in a person. A music education program should develop the aesthetic experience of every student to its highest potential. Aesthetics is the study of the relationship of art to the human senses. Intelligence exists in several areas, which includes music. The concept of aesthetics allows us to see into ourselves, which in turn helps the development of the intelligences. Not only are these intelligences brought up greatly in music education, but they can be transferred to other areas as well, allowing students to grow more through their other subjects.
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Without music, life would be a mistake”. Music is almost as old as the human race and is as much a part of it as anything. So why would anyone choose to get rid of it? An Increasing number of schools across the nation are deciding to cut music education programs. This includes band, orchestra, choir, and general music classes. In 1991, 55.4 percent of public school eighth-graders took part in music classes at school. In 2004, this figure was just 49.1 percent. Money plays a huge role in this statistic: “...when funds are scarce, arts courses are usually the first to be dropped from a school’s curriculum” (“Arts Education”). While many argue that music education is an unnecessary cost for schools, it improves student’s overall well being.
Music is a big part of every distinct culture, and over the years music has changed and developed in so many ways to be what we hear in today’s society. Music plays such an important role in traditional and nontraditional aspects of every single persons life. There is not one day that goes by where we do not hear a rhythm, a beat, or a melody. As we get older, knowing this history of how music was established over the years is an important base in understanding culture from around the world. The first period that music can physically date back to is in Europe from 450-1450 AD, known as the Medieval Era when gregorian chant and monophony thrived.
