Nutrients are the compound in food that organisms need in order to grow and survive. It is also a substance in order for growth body functions, and metabolism. Aside from food intakes and calories, nutrients are different because nutrients help your body to function properly and a lack of it can cause malnutrition. It is also unusable and is use to support healing, metabolism, function, and repairing. There are two types of nutrients: micronutrients and macronutrients. Starting with Greek and Latin roots, micro means small and macro means large. On the other hand, Micronutrients is a dietary component that attribute as minerals and vitamins and is required in small amounts. Meanwhile, macronutrients are nutrients that provide energy and calories and is required in large amounts. Both micronutrients and macronutrients can be obtained by the environment. The food industry provides many varieties of foods that contain nutrients to supply the human body. Michael Pollan, the author of Escape from Western Diet, he stated that “the undertow of nutritionism is powerful”, I agree with this because nutrients plays an important role in food intakes. Processed food is a “balance of nutrients and ingredients”, however, not all of it is bad for you since they 're convenient but they “can mean large amounts of hidden sodium, fats, and sugar” and unprocessed food is the complete opposite. On a different note, genetically modified foods, also known as GMOs, “are foods produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering”. In a different circumstance, organic foods are foods that are organically grown food from local farms; it is also known as “the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants by following the essential principles of organic
The problematic aspect of processed food is all the added hormones, preservatives, and antibiotics that are injected into the food. Organic foods have none of these additives, and the pure characteristic of organic food is a valuable thing. Pollan (2008) agrees with this when he writes, “instead of worrying about nutrients, we should simply avoid any food that has been processed to such an extent that it is more the product of industry than of nature” (p. 424). I have a medical condition in which I am not supposed to eat any foods that have added preservatives, hormones, or antibiotics. This is because my body is hypersensitive to chemicals and, especially, added hormones. It can easily cause serious health problems. Pollan (2008) also added an opinion made by a food politics and policy lecturer, Gyorgy Scrinis, who believes that, “the most important fact about any food is not its nutrient content but its degree of processing” (p. 423). If everyone would stop their constant consideration in nutrient content and turn their attention to additives; America could become a much healthier
Just as Pollan mentions, the industries profit from people making poor choices. One of which is choosing processed foods over whole foods. Given the environment people live in, it is difficult to make healthier choices because processed foods, such as canned or frozen fruits and vegetables, packaged foods, fortified foods, and easy-to-prepare foods, constitutes of more than 75% of foods in grocery stores. Foods that go through such processing lose many of their nutritional values, while industries themselves believe that by processing food they are actually trying to preserve its nutrients and freshness. The public falls for this
Nutrition in humans is a product that require to supply the human body to function, nutrients also helps to prevent any disease in human organs.
Macronutrients and micronutrients are both very important for the human body. Macronutrients are the nutrients that the body needs in larger amounts, while micronutrients are not required in large amounts but a steady supply is necessary for proper functioning in the body system. Macronutrients give energy to our bodies that we need to grow properly and metabolize our food as well as function in other ways. Macronutrients consist of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Micronutrients are the different types of vitamins and minerals needed by the
In the United States, Food is one of the basic needs of life.We tend to spend tons of money every year to buy food. Consuming food reflects America’s culture in the United States. In America, Fast food is a way to enjoy delicious food made with sugar, fat and salt. It’s impossible to back away from eating good tasting food. Unfortunately, this is leading to major destruction. In the human life, food procurement, preparation, and consumption have devoted to an art form.Spite the terms of “America has a food problem,” it shows that our nation is unable to produce and supply safe, nutritious food in a way where it sustains our global population. Health Issues are a result of over consumption, which lead to portion sizes, and food production.
Food industry can be chartered by low margin industry, while along with the shift of power from the manufacturer to the purchaser, the price and demand became flexible, and the product variety increased.
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
Well to start Organic food is grown by farmers who use renewable resources, and this is to keep soil and water from being over used while also hopefully enhancing the environment around them for future generations of farmers. Organic produce is food that has been grown without the aid of most of the conventional pesticides, synthetic federalizers, GMO’S (genetically modified organisms), ionized radiation, or sewage sludge, Organic animals that produce meat, eggs, poultry, or any dairy products are not given any antibiotics or GMOS. Farmers that want to have their produce or animals to be “organic” They must meet all necessary rules and regulations made by the USDA (Untied States Department of Agriculture) and their farm must be inspected by a certified government inspector. The main differences between organic and conventional food is basically just the way that it is grown or handled by farmers. Not to mention the things that are used to help the plants or animals grow, while organic has a strict guideline to follow. conventionally grown foods have much less guide lines to follow such as the pesticides, GMO or fertilizers used in the aid of growth of plants or
Sub Point A: Conventional food like, fruits, vegetables and animals are grown in farms and can be genetically modified to improve size and quantity. The number of harmful substances obtained from conventional food is a huge problem. Organic food is obtained from animals or crops produced by farmers that avoid man-made fertilizers, additives, growth regulators and pesticides.
Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods. Natural foods are healthier, wholesome, and beneficial to the human body and planet then processed foods.
The macronutrients a person consumes are what the body needs to function properly. They are the nutrients from protein, fats and carbohydrates that make up a person's daily nutrition. The amount of macronutrients and ratio of one to the other is what people alter to achieve a certain result. For example, lowering carbs and fats while amping up on protein is what body builders do to gain more muscle. Runners will lower protein while increasing carbs to give themselves a rush for a big races.
What are processed foods? It is food “composed of synthetic chemical additives, such as colorings, preservatives, sugar substitutes and trans-fats” (Fitzgerald, 2006, p.72). Fitzgerald reported that by the “1970s most meats and dairy products that were factory farmed were laced with growth hormones, antibiotics and a range of pesticides” (p.72). Furthermore, food that is frozen, packaged and canned is considered processed food. A brief explanation of the chemical additives in processed food.
American culture is changing dramatically. In some areas it’s a good thing, but in other areas, like our food culture, it can have negative affects. It is almost as if our eating habits are devolving, from a moral and traditional point of view. The great America, the land of the free and brave. The land of great things and being successful, “living the good life.” These attributes highlight some irony, especially in our food culture. Is the American food culture successful? Does it coincide with “good living”? What about fast and processed foods? These industries are flourishing today, making record sales all over the globe. People keep going back for more, time after time. Why? The answer is interestingly simple. Time, or in other words, efficiency. As people are so caught up in their jobs, schooling, sports, or whatever it may be, the fast/processed food industries are rapidly taking over the American food culture, giving people the choice of hot
