Laboratory Safety:
Laboratory safety is a disciplinary way to prevent accidents, injuries and other harmful incidents to have a healthy environment to work in a laboratory for the research and academic communities which includes scientists, teachers, students and other laboratory staffs and non-laboratory staffs.
General laboratory safety rules:
• Eating, drinking, or smoking while working in the laboratory is strictly prohibited.
• Proper training is required to use any equipment in the laboratory
• When working with hazardous materials and/or equipment, it is necessary to wear safety glasses, gloves, laboratory coats, proper shoes. Shorts and sandals should be avoided in the lab.
• Long hair should be tied back.
• Work area must be clear

Proper training and knowledge is required. Some of basic rules to follow while working in the chemical laboratories are given below:
• Have a good knowledge to identify and work with the potential chemical hazards associated with an experiment before start working. Refer to MSDS for any chemical before working with it.
• Use laboratory safety equipment such as fume hoods and other local ventilation to prevent exposure to airborne chemicals. Wear gloves and other personal safety clothing to avoid skin contact with all laboratory chemicals to minimize the exposure to them.
• Place chemical or solvent bottles in proper cabinets and don’t keep them on the floor to avoid any unnecessary spillage. Use plastic or plastic-coated glass bottles for storing 4L solvents or acids.
• Be careful when transporting solvent and acid bottles. Use rubber carriers.
• Flammable material cabinets should be used for flammable chemicals to avoid fire incidents.
• Label all wash bottles, base baths, solvent bottles, and chemicals clearly with all the important details including opening date. Label research samples with chemical names and/or chemical structures and/or the relevant laboratory notebook number and page
There were minimal risks in this section of the practical as glucose is a sugar and is not harmful; however we still wore lab coats and goggles to protect our clothing and eyes from any accidental splashing. We also had to take care when using the pipettes so not to stab ourselves or anyone with them so we had to make sure that we had full concentration on the task and that no one was in too close proximity of you so that they are in danger of getting injured. We also had be careful not to smash any of the glass equipment as this could cause someone to get cut so to prevent this we tried hard not to smash any of the equipment and any breakages are cleared up following laboratory procedures and practices.
I also wear a high-vis vest on site to make myself more noticeable to anyone working nearby. I also wear protective gloves, as I am cutting tiles the edges can be quite sharp and could cut my hands/fingers so in this case I use gloves to prevent this from happening. I wear steel toe cap boots which are the right size and comfortable to prevent hurting my feet/toes. As a tiler carrying heavy boxes of tiles around to different locations there is a chance I could drop them and without steel toe cap boots on they can possibly break your toes or in other cases your foot. I wear a hard hat adjusted to the right size, which is perfect for the job and not worn out to prevent hurting my head from falling from above.

If you see a torch is leaking don’t use it. Don’t run around machinery. Don’t go without safety glasses or goggles. Don’t misuse the machinery. Don’t touch the blade of a running saw. The growing relevance of Chemical Engineering in today’s world, from energy & oil industries to pharmaceuticals & biotechnology, and a keen desire for applying this knowledge in interrelated spheres motivates me to pursue a Master’s degree in this field. My interest in science goes back to the time when I was in school. We had a young and enthusiastic teacher who took us on field trips and visits to science fairs and museums.
