Wall of Silence Journal Entry Two In today’s heath care, informatics and technology are a crucial part in tracking and improving patient care. Developing competencies through education enhances the nurse’s ability to provide safe and effective care in an environment where technology is progressing. Nursing has expanded to organizations that employ nursing informatics professionals and according to Kleib, Simpson, and Rhodes (2016), “nursing informatics professionals in executive leadership roles reported better clinical system processes and better overall quality of care for patients”. By improving the education of healthcare workers in technology, patient satisfaction and well-being will increase and as technology advances in the future, …show more content…
They tend to follow what they hear from other individuals and what they believe to be a good reputable facility. My family is the same in that extent, but have careers in the healthcare field and know of what facilities or providers are best for certain health concerns. My preference is utilizing different tools like the ACHA to discover what provider or facility best fits me. As health care professionals, encouraging patients and consumers to research different facilities and healthcare providers is important to locate optimal patient care and …show more content…
As someone becomes accustomed to not doing something every day, the skill is lost. For example, a nurse learns that before giving a patient any medication, they must check the five rights of administration. Nowadays, nurses do not check the five rights because the computer does it for them when the patient is scanned. Technology can fail, and it is our duty as nurses to protect patients from harm and to be knowledge in skills that do not require technology. In my experience, technology is used very often and safety precautions are present if something goes wrong. For example, vital signs machine are used all the time, but if a nurse or clinical partner sees an abnormal value, they take vitals manually. Technology can also support safety. Bed alarms are safety measures that detect a patient getting out of bed and helps prevent the patient from fall injuries. In the next 10 years, technology would continue to provide assistance to healthcare professionals in managing patient care, but the emotional aspect of providing care to patients will still be the
Nurses have a considerable amount of responsibility in any facility. They are responsible for administering medicines and treatments to there patient’s. While caring for there patients, nurses will make observations on patient’s health and then record there findings. As well as consulting with doctors and other healthcare professionals to plan proper individual patient care. They teach their patients how to manage their illnesses and explain to both the patient and the patients family how to continue treatment when returning home (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014-15). They also record p...
Working as a professional registered nurse in the hospital, I realized how nurses struggle to find balance between devoting the time charting on the computer and spending time taking care of the patients. Moreover, I’ve seen nurses where they get discouraged trying to find this balance between patients and charting. As a bedside nurse, I would love nothing, but to tend to the needs of my patients. The length of time consume on electronic charting all day, take the very essence of bedside nursing away from nurses, which is caring. Reducing the time of nurses being occupied on charting by eliminating redundant tasks while conforming to their standard, are the changes I would like to make. These are a few of the reasons why I wanted to pursue a degree in informatics. I would advocate for nurses everywhere and to become an instrument in providing them a better electronic health system to work on. Pursuing the degree in nursing informatics will benefit me in
Technological advances enable nurses to provide accurate, timely care for a patient. This is due to the fact that these advances enable doctors and nurses to quickly diagnose, explain and predict the health-illness status of a patient, thus allowing health care professionals to spend less time finding answers, and more time providing quality care. For nurses, this includes spending time with the patient establishing rapport, communication and a trusting relationship for optimum clinical care.
This nurse believes that if the appropriate monitoring of safety and security is implemented to protect confidentiality and quality of care that information technology (IT) in healthcare with continue to have a positive impact on patient care and outcomes. This nurse also believes that proper extensive training on these sophisticated systems is very important to patient safety and efficiency of care. With all the new advances in healthcare emerging it will be challenging but can only get better.
Telehealth allows the patient to have access to preventative care and education on their disease process and how to manage it at home. A., Pomerleau, S. G., & Penner, J. L., “Knowing is a process of perceiving and understanding the Self and the world”. Nurses as caregivers must appreciate each patient for who they are as individuals. The nurse must also know how to provide nursing care with the knowledge he/she gains from experience in the field. Caring is the main component needed for a nurse to give quality care to a patient.
The authors consist of nurses, specifically: a Chief Nursing Officer, a Nursing Informatics Officer, and a Dean/Professor of Nursing at Belmont University. The article described how vital nursing documentation is to achieve optimal patient care, including improving patient outcomes & collaborating with other healthcare providers. Using Henderson’s 14 fundamental needs as a framework for their research, the authors proved a definition of basic nursing care and incorporated it into an electronic health record. The authors utilized a team of 16 direct care nurses who were knowledgeable with documenting ele...
In the late 1960s, the first computer systems were installed in hospitals (Murphy,2010). The computer systems started in the basements of hospitals and now are in every nursing unit. Nursing informatics allows for a more efficient and faster delivery of health care. Nursing informatics is a way of keeping patient information properly organized and creating patient care plans.
Nurses are fundamental to the process of implementation of certain systems used in the workplace. Nurses should be allowed to have input and suggestions regarding what works and what doesn’t when it comes to those systems, whether it is the EMR, healthcare organization systems, or even the use of point of care systems (Mitchell, 2011). This allows for open collaboration between the nurses and information technology to come up with solutions and user friendly applications when needed. The technology world is ever changing and with that comes new ways to monitor and take care of our patients.
The IOM report warned that the nursing profession must change, or it would not be able to meet the growing demands that are emerging as a result of health reform, new technologies and an aging population. (George Washington University, 2013) Nurse face with the new opportunities and challenges in reforming future health system. Nurses play an increasingly important role in leadership Nursing health care field is in the process of developing advance information and management systems for the goal of patient center care. And collaborate with all health care team That explicates that nurses will require advance information skills in order to uses this
Information Systems/Technology and patient care technology for the improvement and transformation of health care is an important part of the DNP. Technology has transformed every aspect of human life in positive ways. Technology brought efficiency and improved healthcare deliverance system. Healthcare technologies enabled practitioners to better understand disease process and how to implement best treatment plan. DNP programs across the country embrace information systems and technology in their nursing curriculum because, it prepares nursing students to be innovative and deliver best care (AACN, 2006). DNP graduates must have the ability to use technology to analyze and disseminate critical information to find solutions that
Over the past decade, technological advances have paved the way for nurses to provide, quality, safe, standardized and individualized patient care (Saba & McCormick, 2015). The use of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) to manage patient data is quickly becoming widespread in the healthcare industry. The emerging use of the Electronic Health Record, is transforming how nurses care for patients. By creating and implementing an electronic, comprehensive, standardized method of recording patient data, nurses can facilitate and coordinate patient care with members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The use of the Electronic Health Record will promote positive
Technology is stated as the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective. To go one step further, nursing technology is using a tool to advance nursing practice. “The Institute of medicine identified that technology as a viable method of enhancing patient care delivery and improving staff productivity” Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003 page). Because inadequate nursing staff causes shortcuts to be taken, there are mistakes made that could have possibly been prevented. Errors by nursing staff were variously reported as being responsible for between 44,000 and 98,000 hospital deaths per year. Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003). Technology can have a large impact on nursing. In the past 5 to 10 years, computerized patient records have increased less than 10%. This number shows us that we are still not embracing technology to its full potential. Today in most hospital systems computerized electronic charting is being used. Many hospitals have many different systems for...
My overall vision is to develop and promote information technology solutions to better improve health outcomes, patient safety, and prevention of medical errors in underserved countries. Nursing Informatics is a nursing field that involves record keeping and focuses on finding ways to improve information management and communications in nursing to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance the quality of patient care. This field is primarily administrative but plays a part in patient care and quality of health care. There are other types of nurses, but many people focus on the nurses who perform the medical treatments with the doctors. This is evident in many films, TV shows, and in other popular media outlets. However, many people do not know what nursing informatics is nor pay attention to that side of nursing which involves the documentation of records and other miscellaneous items, use of advances in technology to improve
Nursing informatics is a branch of nursing or area of specialty that concentrates on finding ways to improve data management and communication in nursing with the sole objective of improving efficiency, reduction of health costs and enhancement of the quality of patient care (Murphy, 2010). It is a growing area of nursing specialty that combines computer science, information technology and nursing science in the management and processing of nursing information, data and knowledge with the sole objective of supporting nursing practice and research. Various nursing theorists have formulated various theoretical frameworks or models related to nursing informatics (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2013). They are defined as a cluster of related concepts or ideas that establish actions that act as major guidelines in nursing informatics to issues related to the central concept of data, information and knowledge. Some of the theories that inform and assist in the framing of nursing informatics include Turley's nursing informatics model, Goossen’s framework for nursing informatics research and Staggers & Parks’ nurse-computer interaction framework (Elkind, 2009).
