The fear of someone having a sexuality or gender that does not fit within the strict confines of cisgender heterosexuality usually takes the form of aggressive intolerance towards those who identify as lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). This kind of fear is known as homophobia and in some cases homophobia can keep some people away from intuitions of education. In classrooms all across America there are LGBTQ students facing the hardship of living in country where homophobia is seen as acceptable. School are supposed to be safe places meant to aid children on their journey to personal growth. Though it seems that if the child is not a cisgender heterosexual then having a safe place of learning is an unobtainable privilege. …show more content…
A teacher who really wants to help has to first keep a check of all their homophobic tendencies and make sure they do not affect how they interact with their student. This can be done by punishing homophobic behavior whenever it has been witness or reported. Also as a teacher just being someone available to talk to can help LGBTQ students. If the teacher wants to make changes throughout the school and not just the classroom they are options. One is supporting or creating a program specifically made to helping ensure the safety of LGBTQ student. The other option is to suggest that all the teacher go through some training to help all the teacher better understand how to handle situations involving LGBTQ students. Administrators can create and inforce policies that seek to stop all anti-gay actions towards all students. They have the power to make learning anti-homophobia works mandatory for everyone working within school. Though even parent can do their part by questioning their homophobia and there their children to be respect of everyone even if they seem
Language is a powerful tool. The artful manipulation of language has sparked countless revolutions and has continuously fueled social progression over the course of human history. In Carmen Vàzquez’s “Appearances,” Vàzquez argues that homophobia is a serious concern in society. She rallies for all people, regardless of sexual orientation, to challenge society’s unyielding gender roles and homophobia. Through the art of persuasion, Carmen Vàzquez blended careful diction, emotional stories, and persuasive structure to aggressively address the problem of homophobia both coherently and effectively.
In our world there has and will always have social issues that our society that is damaging our people. One of the proponent issue is in our world is Homophobia. As Homophobia is defined has people that dislike of or is prejudice against homosexual people. Recently our society has started to be more accepting with the LGBTQ community. Homophobia has really affected all people in very negative ways regardless of their sexual orientation. As homophobia is based on someone disliking or being prejudice to another person targeted to people that are homosexual. There are many people that want to fight against homophobia and help protect and support the LGBTQ community. The different sexual orientations of all individuals they have the right to be who they identity them selves as. As homophobia not only affects the LGBTQ community but affects every sexual orientation, seeing that much hate and prejudice toward people it is just sad and disturbing that people still hate on something they have no control over.
No one should have to be judged by what they want to be whether it is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or hetero-sexual we are all the same no matter what we feel on the inside. All most all schools say a girl cannot play a boy sport because they will get hurt; girls should be able to play whatever sport they want to know matter what the outcome may be. Also, every school has the rule no sexual relationship between teacher and students because they follow the rule of boundaries between teacher and student. Do you agree that students and teachers should not be able to date each other? Do you all agree that people should be allowed to date whoever they want? Do you hate feminism or do you agree with feminism? If we let these issues go with kids will continue to stay in the closet, never becoming who they truly are meant to be, and a teacher will hurt a
As the world is progressing further into the future, we, as humans, are learning from our past mistakes and past judgements that were made and we are building on from the history and are working towards creating a better future for everyone. And, as we humans learn, we have learned that some words are okay to say and some are not okay to say. Like the words faggot/fag, shemale, hefemale and trannny. These word are considered nowadays to be very harmful and considered homophobic slurs. Now, I understand your question. “Okay, what makes a homophobic slur?” Well, we have to look at the definition of a slur first, then we can build off of that basis. The dictionary definition of a slur is:
I was lucky to grow up in a household that did not discriminate based on color, religion, socioeconomics, gender, or sexual orientation, but I learned quickly that my views are not similar to those of my peers. Here in South Mississippi, we are “behind the times” and not aligned with the rest of the nation when it comes to meeting the needs of LGBT students. How do we even attempt to close that gap when so many of the teachers and administrators do not agree with or believe in the “life style and choices of” LGBT students?
I remember when I was in high school; I encountered a gruesome experience. A young girl was being beat and thrown into a trashcan by two boys and one girl. I hysterically ran to her aid and told the group of people to stop. Minutes later, security arrived and the victim was picked up and driven away. Two days later, our high school principle scheduled a mandatory auditorium student meeting. He said, that the young girl was beaten and bullied because she identified as a homosexual. I couldn’t believe it! I was embarrassed and ashamed that these students did not have any sense of morality. Is our educational system lacking the knowledge that students are constantly being abused and bullied due to sexual orientations, ethnicity and culture? Perhaps
Coming out, regardless of what one is coming out as, is incredibly difficult. An important aspect of accepting ones’ sexuality is the support that one gets from others of the same sexuality. “This support comes not only from loved ones … but also from associating with like-minded others in the gay, lesbians, and bisexual communities” (McLean 63). However, even in a group that’s been discriminated against by heterosexuals, there is an outstanding amount biphobia in the LGBT community.

The movie “It’s Elementary” does a great job showing the positivity reaction kids have to presenting LGBT issues in the school system. The documentary showed that all age groups can benefit from these lessons. For example, a heterosexual, 8th grade social studies teacher felt it was very important to teach his students to be respectful and not afraid of their sexuality. This teacher started his lesson by asking students to share stereotypes. He then related these stereotypes to LGBT issues. One student shared with the class that he uses slurs “out of ignorance”. This
We have all at some point or another heard someone say that God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. This saying is an excellent example of how a large number of Christian fundamentalist feel about the homosexual community. Studies have shown that there are more Christian homophobes than there is homophobia in any other group or religion in the United States (Wolff, J. R., Himes, H. L., Kwon, E., & Bollinger, R. A., 2012). Homophobia is the irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals. In Christianity, homophobia represents misunderstanding and fear of the unknown.
I sit at lunch, sometimes wondering "Why do bullies target , and/or people who are not the same size, gender, have the same religion, the same sexuality as them." With so many different people out there you will hardly find anyone who agrees with you word for word. A growing problem in America with this is sexuality, teachers in a certain school from Minneapolis turn the other way if a student is getting bullied, or harassed if they have any sexual preference that is not straight. This sickens me, the thought of kids getting bullied in a place where they should feel safe over something that should not
Regrettably, in the respect of victimization, there are many groups of minorities that become victims to society’s cruel intentions. For example, the elderly, or people with disabilities, foster care children and people who identify as LGBTQ, with the many. For those who don’t know LGBTQ stands for the following; lesbians, gay, bisexual, transsexual and people who are questioning their sexuality. As much as society has grown over the years there are still quite a few people who are bothered by the sexual orientation of these individuals. The truth is that being straight, gay, lesbian, etc does not change the rights of a person and does not change them from being a human being just like anyone else. Everyone should be treated equal no matter their sexual orientation, race or religion.
A major problem is discrimination against LGBT youth (Cray, 3 Barriers) . They are constantly harassed both verbally - as shown by Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council claiming it’s appalling to tell LGBT youths that they’re not shameful (as done by the “It Gets Better” project) and comparing homosexuality to drug abuse (Hooper, The War) , by the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni calling gays “disgusting” after signing a strict anti-gay law and telling CNN reporters that he does, in fact, have prejudice against homosexuals (LGBTQnation, Uganda President) , by my own father comparing homosexuality as a whole to beastiality, and by both parents refusing to use a transgendered friend’s PGPs (Prefered Gender Pronouns) - and physically, shown in many public places: Schools, by 15 year old freshman Zach King’s beating (Ludlow, Gay Student’s Beating) , parties, by the assault and murder of Dwayne Jones, 16, of Ja...

...that school officials can be held responsible if they fail to take steps to protect gay and lesbian students from antigay harassment. The changing educational climate has created a need for school leaders to identify tools, and strategies and programs that will enhance the success of all students. The decision making process used by administration also impacts how other in the organization view them (Dalton, 2006).
