Physical activity is an opportunity for people to develop habits for a healthier lifestyle and function with awareness throughout the day. If children start receiving the required amount of exercise at a young age along with healthy eating habits, it can strengthen individual mentality and physic of children can prolong into later in life. Athletics can be an opportunity to create abilities to mature into adults only if it starts at a young age. High school sports as well as other physical activity, can develop life skills, increase educational involvement, and improve the overall health of adolescences.
Athletics can help prepare a person to be the best of their abilities so they are prepared for their future. Sports builds character with all lessons that are taught with all of the diversity sports offers. The different responsibilities have taught young athletes a work ethic that they can use for the rest of their lives. Athletics can be a way for adolescents to be ready for the future (“Boehm, 2016”). In addition to responsibility, different activities in every diverse sport can prepare school-aged children to be ready for the work force and for the real world. People have more confidence and self-respect after playing high school sports and are better at setting goals and have a higher sense of morality.

Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life
Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. Most professional athletes have been playing their specialized sport since grade school, and although impressive, the people we are rooting for are wearing out quickly. Although youth sports programs are a health benefit to society, they also pose disadvantages to a young person’s growth and development.

The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
In today’s world, our adolescence is faced with many challenges and obstacles that make it hard for them to overcome. Involvement in sports is an integral part of child development and teaches youth to lead active, healthy lives while developing many of the fundamental skills necessary for a child to succeed. Sports challenge children to excel physically and mentally, and teach valuable skills; such as, leadership, hard work and perseverance which translate beyond the playing field to all aspects of life, whether it be in the classroom, at work, or in the community. Participation in sports has a positive effect on reducing the involvement and exposure youths may have to violence and unethical activity. Sports offer children a positive alternative to idleness; which, if a child is consistently left without constructive activity, can often lead to violence. Sports help to eliminate differences between each other and cultural barriers by removing the separation between such groups through healthy competition and the realization of shared goals. The youth who play sports are more inclined to do better in school and later, are more likely to go on to college and achieve a successful job.
For some people, high school is just a place to make friends and be popular and others use high school to get somewhere in their lives and be successful. Most students gravitate towards popularity and neglect their grades causing them to have problems later on in their adult lives. The real problem with students valuing sports and social status over making good grades and being a good student is the faculty, allowing it to happen by not recognizing other school activities during announcements and pep rallies. The students who do not join sports join other underappreciated school activities, and are not supported in the fullest capacity.
