Hair is considered one of the components of the integumentary system, along with the skin, nails, glands and nerves. Mammalian hair has many functions including protection from environmental factors and the ability to disperse sweat gland products such as pheromones. Almost every part of the human body is covered by hair except for the palms, hands and bottoms of the feet. On average, every person has about five million hairs; each of these hairs is born from a follicle or tiny tube-like structure that grows into the dermis layer of the skin. Oftentimes this follicle even reaches the subcutaneous layer, which is made of fat and connective tissue. (UXL Complete Health Research, 2001)
In the recent past year or two, a woman’s natural hair has become a big thing. Before, African American women, to be specific, were so disgusted by their hair. They would do anything in their power to change the “nappy” aspect of their hair to “beautiful”. They would use relaxers very so often and hot combs.
According to 10 Weird and Wacky Beauty Facts by Andrea Lavinthal, in ancient Greece, the most sought-after hair color was blond. Not many Greeks were naturally blond, so light hair was probably perceived as beautiful because it was so exotic. Women would lighten their hair using plant extracts or arsenic. This essay is concerned with issues of identity, body image and the politics of hair within African American culture. It discusses the lived experiences of a number of African American women and is no way generalizable to all African American women. Nonetheless, body image and hair politics are prominent features in African American culture because they have deep historical roots and still feature in present day. Body image is generally understood as a mental image of one’s body as it appears to others (Featherstone 2010). This mental image produces body consciousness, which Samantha Kwan describes as an amplified mindfulness that one’s body does not conform to hegemonic cultural standards (Kwan 2010). In today’s modern context, hegemonic cultural norms are reproduced and widely disseminated by the mass media with the help of new technologies. These new technologies Elliott’s discusses, with some in the form of satellite television and other widely utilized media, give viewers unprecedented opportunities to view and scrutinize their favorite celebrities in close proximity (Elliott 2010).

By discovering exactly why hair differs among ethnicities, society can see that one should not be judged based on their hair.
Something as seemingly simple as hair can be much more complex when we take the time to think about another person’s perspective, history, values, culture, and feelings. The interaction in Seminole, Texas wasn’t just about a haircut.
As years rolled by, cosmetology and the business of looking good began to pick up a huge amount of customers. Getting hair curled, ironed, or wavy is very popular now. A lot of women today, all over the world, want to look like their favorite star. It was that need and craze to look good, which made cosmetology successful as it is today. If we aspire to anything at all, I suppose it should be to exude confidence in a similar manner in our daily lives. Washington, who is 40 years-old stopped relaxing her hair in her twenties and said this about her natural hair. "I like to wear my natural texture, especially now because I have children and I want them to know that their hair is perfect as it is. They don't have to change it or straighten it. They can, but they don't have
Hair is an important part of our body. It can be found anywhere and can be a useful evidence in forensic science. It consists of three layers, namely cuticle, cortex and medulla. Cuticle- is a covering that consists of hard scales made of keratin, which is a protein approaching tip ends of the hair. There are three types of cuticle: coronal, imbricated and spinous types. Cortex consists of stretched out beam shaped cells, buried with pigment granules for hair to cede with color and is the main body of the hair shaft. It may also contain pigment granula, ovoid bodies and cortical fusi (Wright, 2008). Furthermore, medulla can be categorized into continuous, fragmental, absent and interrupted types. If medulla
One of women’s constant struggles is upkeep with culture and society’s ever-changing definition of beauty. Although both genders have hair on their bodies, the views and acceptability of the amount or the location of body hair vary immensely. In fact, women are often thought to be hairless and men to be hairier (DeMello, 2014). Women must then put in effort to uphold a standard, in which the idea that being feminine is natural and effortless (Toerien and Wilkinson, 2003). That being the case, I will argue that the hairless female body has been transformed over time to represent beauty and youth. More importantly, I will argue that it has now become normative in Western society and deemed unacceptable if women do not conform to the hairless
During an interview with Channel 4, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said that “hair is a political thing”. Indeed, the way people wear their hair tell something about them. As the author said, if a black woman wears braids, people will have a certain image of her, as a radical, an artist, a traditional African woman and so on. It opens the debate on what society consider as beautiful. Most of the time, straight hair would be considered as beautiful and professional. In Americanah, Ifemelu has an
Hair analysis begins with the identification phase. First, the hair has to be determined if it is human or not. Human hair is classified into two main categories: vellus hair and terminal hair. Vellus hair is very fine and hard to see and can be found all over the body. Terminal hair is the hair you frequently see in eyebrows, beards, head hair, pubic hair, arm hair, and leg hair. Since there are so many different types of animals, non-human hair has several different characteristics. The four classifications that generally apply to forensic investigations are: fur or wool, vibrissa or tactile, bristles, and other hairs such as manes or tails on horses. Animal hairs can be distinguished from human hairs in numerous ways. The medulla is a tubular structure that runs down the middle of the hair. It can be thick or thin and continuous or discontinuous. Animal medullas’ are usually thicker, where as human hairs have fragmented, inconsistent medullas, or
We all know that everywhere in the world, what defines a person is the inside of this person, in other words, it is the personality and the qualities (and even the flaws) of the individual that define him. But let’s be honest, we all tend to judge someone by its appearance. And hair is a huge part of our appearance. So, we can easily say that hair is one of the criteria that we use to judge and define someone. In the book Americanah (the nickname given to all the Nigerians that move to the United States when they came back to succeed in Nigeria) written by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, hair is a central element of the story of Ifemelu, the main character of the book.
