Hello, fellow classmates you might be asking yourself what is this essay about? Well, to answer your question this essay will give you and run down on how I used my motivation towards grit, growth mindset and critical thinking in school. But of course, It was not an easy task to do as I had to learn how to implement these essential techniques to help me gain these skills I have mastered throughout the time of taking this English 80 course. Secondly, I had to start from the very basic and move my way up to the desired level I wanted to be at. Grit to me holds a meaning of dedication and motivation. My motivation to have the grit to help me in while attending school. “Cognition and emotion work together in a seamless, integrated way to help us preserve in a task”. This ties back to how my motivation to succeed in school having implementing grit can have rewarding outcomes. For example, improvement in grades, strive to become something, and motivation to expand my education. Having a growth mindset before starting this English course was a bit of a challenge having to maintain it to a level where I felt was necessary was not an easy task. “A few modern philosophers … assert that an individual’s intelligence is a fixed quality which cannot be increased” (Dweck 5). As the weeks went by I maintain the perfect mindset level that will forever stick with me and help me through the time I have in my English course. Furthermore, with the perfect training, and methods I can begin to strengthen my thinking abilities, something I once devalued on and once did not really care about. How can we begin to fly if we are afraid to leave to throw ourselves out there in the open sky? “The sky is the limit” as one of my favorite artists once said and truthfully he is right. In this article Emily Hanford is taking information from Angela Duckworth’s findings on the research of ‘grit’. Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford also quotes Duckworth’s article to then explain that the, “‘ gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford is thus explaining that grit is like perseverance; that a person who works hard can achieve as much as a person who has intelligence. He asserts that ‘grit’ (the passion and determination when pursuing long term goals) is becoming less persuasive and credible. Kohn states that grit can cause serious issues that have real consequences.
In The article “Brainology” “Carol S Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University, differentiates between having a fixed and growth mindset in addition how these mindsets have a deep effect on a student’s desire to learn. Individuals who have a fixed mindset believe they are smart without putting in effort and are afraid of obstacles, lack motivation, and their focus is to appear smart.. In contrast, students with a growth mindset learn by facing obstacles and are motivated to learn. Dwecks argues that students should develop a growth mindset.
While reading this book I found out that under certain circumstances I am a fixed mindset rather than a growth mindset. One, very identifiable, area I have a fixed mindset in, is the math content area. When ever I think about being forced to learn or teach math, I completely shut down. I feel I’ve become this way because for years I’ve heard that I need more work in that area, and that I have a hard time understanding it. So I feel I’ve lost any drive to concur it when I’ve already felt defeated by it. Which after reading this book I have realized this mentality could easily transfer to my students because that is one thing I have learned again and again from this book it is that one fixed mid set can have an immediate impact on the mind set of those people who are interacting with the person.
Success in life is related to the achievement of individual goals, short and long term. Success has historically been related to the measurable cognitive functions such as IQ and talent. However in more modern time’s there has been a shift towards the idea that developmental non-cognitive factors, such as grit and self-control, may have an impact on the level of success that an individual achieves. Non-cognitive factors such as grit and self-control are somewhat related but also distinct from one another, they may have an important connection to levels of success throughout the stages of life from childhood to adulthood.
“Over time, grit is what separates fruitful lives from aimlessness.”-John Ortberg this is a great quote that shows how grit is necessary in being successful in life. Grit is key to getting want you want and achieving dreams.
There are many attitudes that form certain mindsets. Some of these mindsets can change how a person does and perceives things. Some mindsets that can do just that are Dweck’s example of a growth mindset and fixed mindsets. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is one in where “.. students believe that intelligence is fixed..” and a fixed mindset is the “..believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter. Because people with growth mindsets can through setbacks, and find alternatives to better themselves; They turn to perseverance and hard work to achieve their goals.
There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. Grit can be obtained through keeping one’s goals in mind, sticking to a schedule, and staying resilient to animosity. Grit is defined as using perseverance and passion for the goals one has. Someone with grit has courage, resolve and a strong character. Try to picture a person clenching their teeth while faced with a difficult tack, yet they conquer it anyway.
In the article “Grit” Angela Duckworth defines grit as “perseverance and passion for very long term goals” Pg 2. The quote defines grit as consistently working hard toward your long-term goal. For instance, if we see high school students, most of them are not interested in school. They are just waiting to drop out of school and live a simple life, on the other hand, there are some students who don’t want to drop out of school because they have grit for their long-term goals. In the same way, from the moment the readers are introduced to the First WES Moore, he has an inner sense of goodness which manifests itself in his grit. He strives for his goals with determination and courage from his mother. Unlike him, the other Wes has an inner sense of instability which leads him to constantly make bad decisions repeatedly and manifests his grit as negative and unable to make well-thought decisions. The First Wes had grit toward his long-term goals. In the book the author Wes Moore explains, how the First Wes Moore changed “As I sat in the other end of the line, listening to my mother talk about ‘Sacrifice’….” pg96.the quote explains that, the mother and grandparents made many sacrifices to put him through school, and make him successful with a bright future. He faced many pure pushers in life in military school because of his good up bring and education he always made the right decisions. I am willing to learn and try new things, even if it includes struggling. As of how I can use my growth mindset in this class can start off with willing to learn new types of outlines or learning to extend my vocabulary and writing. Like many I struggle with putting together an essay, but I’m sure that with the mindset I carry and the knowledge of my professor anything can become possible. The outcome of this can result positively and allow me to most importantly have ownership of my writing. To begin planning for ahead of time, ways I can help to strengthen this habit of mind is to face difficult obstacles. When I have trouble understanding the material I’ll make sure to ask first the professor and afterwards my classmates if I’m still in doubt. In the reading “Mindset: How you can fulfil your potential” by (Dweck, 2012) Chapter One introduces the reader to the Fixed and Growth mindset, and identifies how basic qualities and intelligence can be improved by effort.
Have you ever thought about yourself if you are in the fixed or a growth mindset? A fixed mindset person is someone who overcomes obstacles, works hard, and failure does not stop them. On the other hand a person who is in the fixed mindset is someone who is non challenge, gives up, or thinks that success is abuse. In a book called “Mindset The New Psychology of Success” the author Carol S. Dweck talks about different ways we can convert ourselves from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and the author also talks about the qualities of the growth and fixed mindsets. In a movie“Freedom Writers” the author Erin Gruwell shows us how she was a growth minded teacher but her students were in the fixed minded group. Throughout the school year the students had a fixed mindset but as time went by the students somehow their mindsets into the growth mindset. Freedom writers illustrates the fixed mindsets of the teacher and students and a growth minded teacher who changed everything.
There are many roads to be successful in learning, but they all involve developing mindset. Developing the right mindset is a key success for most learning. Carol S.Dweck, the author of " brainology", indentified two diffent mindsets : fixed mindsets and grow mindsets. These impact student 's learning differently. From my point of view, having a growth mindset is the best for success since this belief assists students learn and develop a good self-motivation in goals, efforts, and setbacks.
