The food stamps program helps low income families survive by providing them with subsidized income for food. Soda has no nutritional value therefor instead of helping individuals by giving nutrition it will contribute to health problems like obesity and diabetes. The United States already has a major obesity epidemic with the lower income at a greater risk of being affected. One reason for this is that healthy food is more expensive than less healthy food. The government should step up and fund programs that promote good quality nutrients to bring down the price and help the nation get in to shape.

Many realize the devastation that can happen to them or their families. If government agencies started to look at junk food like they did at Tabaco the world would be a healthier place to live. According to the USDA, one can of soda contains thirty-nine grams of added sugar. The recommended amount of added sugar for men is 37.5 grams and the recommended amount of added sugar for women is 25 grams. That means one serving for both men and women are above what the government recommends. Why is the government paying its poorest sickest population to drink something that it does not recommend? Lead them in the right direction by subsidizing fruit, vegetables whole grains. Send education packets teaching them how to balance a diet. Encourage planting fresh food and teach them how to live a healthy life style. Take care of the poor by helping them take care of themselves. Some things that the food stamp program allows its participants to buy include red bull Candy, Mixes for alcoholic beverages and artificial sweetener. All things that are known to be bad for the body and not recommended by doctor’s (Christopher). How can the administration say unhealthy food is not good for you, do not eat it but the government will give you money for the unhealthy food we do not
According to Dolgoff and Feldstein (2003), “the needs and goals of the Food Stamp Program are to alleviate hunger and malnutrition by enabling low-income households to buy a nutritious adequate diet” (p. 132). The program also improved the market for local merchants to produce food for eligible low-income households and other agencies such as the School Lunch Program which safeguard the health and wel...
Many families and people have become too dependent on food stamps. “Critics of food stamps and government spending, however, argue that too many families have become dependent on government aid.”(NoteCard #1) But if they did not have this program people would go hungry. “11.9 million people went hungry in the United States”... “that included nearly 700,000 children, up more than 50% from the year before.”(NoteCard #2, Point 2) The program does good and helps people but it also spends a lot of money to get people food stamps. “..food-stamp recipients has soared to 44 million from 26 million in 2007, and the costa have more than doubled to $77 billion from $33 billion.”(NoteCard #5) But in the end, is it worth it? People need the assistance. It does help people from going hungry and keeps them at least with a little food in their stomach to that keeps them from starving. A lot of people who could not get jobs, were eligible for the program because they did not have a source of income. “Critics of food stamps and government spending, however, argue that too many families have become dependent on government aid.”(NoteCard #1) Since not everyone could get work, the government changed the requirements and it went for the better and for the
The federal Food Stamp Program is an assisted nutrition program that helps millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families (United States Department of Agriculture). This program gives its recipients extra money each month to try to help them have better food security. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is also the largest program in the federal safety net (United States Department of Agriculture). In Ohio’s Appalachian counties, there are 515,300 recipients which is 25.4% of the population (Job and Family Services). The Supplemental Nutrition Program is a good program except for one problem that can be fixed relatively fast and one problem that it will take a little time to solve. The problem that can be fixed right away is that the Supplemental Nutrition Program can be abused by the recipients buying junk food instead of healthy food. The problem that will take some time to fix is that some recipients make unhealthy food choices because they do not have access to a local supermarket. In order to fix these two problems the Food Stamp Program needs to better regulate what can be bought with the Food Stamp card and items in convenient stores need to be better stocked in order to keep accepting Food Stamp cards.

Beginning in 2008, Dorothy Rosenbaum began to explore the correlation between recent economic slowdowns and the increase in food prices, exacerbating this hardship for many low-income families. Food stamp benefits are supposed to be sufficient so low-income families can afford the “Thrifty Food Plan,” the low cost diet established by the USDA. However, as food prices increase, Congress has cut the supply of food stamps besides this constant demand. Without government intervention, these consumers will be worse off and suffer from the lack of food stamp benefits.
The government must have a say in our diets. Because the issues of obesity have already reached national scales, because the costs of obesity and related health issues have gone far beyond reasonable limits, and because fighting nutritional issues is impossible without fighting poverty and other social issues, the government should control the range and the amount of available foods. The cost of healthier foods should decrease. The access to harmful foods should be limited. In this way, the government will be able to initiate a major shift in nutritional behaviors and attitudes in society.
The government should follow the First amendment. Which states the people have the right to freedom. If they take away the people's right to eat junk food, salt, and sugar then the government is basically taking away their freedom to drink and eat what they please. Without the sugar, the salt, and other sweet components some foods would become rather bland and boring.
The hunger problems in the United States are often exaggerated. We often see news stories of children going hungry or starving kids out on the street. I am not saying those problems do not exists, I am saying they are not as common as the media portrays them to be. There are 50 million Americans classified in poverty, yet only 4% percent of American parents say their children are ever hungry. I firmly believe that no child should go hungry, but 4% is a very small percentage, considering a record high 46 million Americans (1 in every 7 citizens) are receiving food stamps (Kozak). I am aware many families need the support of food stamps to help keep food on the table for their children. I am not convinced, however, that 1 in every 7 citizens need this help. I believe the government could do a much better job of investigating families or making requirements a little tighter to make sure only the people that need these benefits may receive
There are various arguments against the use of food stamps in order to purchase unhealthy foods, despite these arguments, such as increased healthier diet, impact negatively to economy, and even the aspect psychologically these are indisputably biased and not credible. Allowing consumers to apply their own free will and ability to obtain foods produces a more positive result for all involved.

Local governments around the country like San Francisco, Seattle, and Berkeley have started to make or propose laws that tax sugar-sweetened drinks, they have set a precedent but more needs to be done. In the article “The New War Against Obesity” the author states that while coming up with a long term fix for the problem will take a lot more than just taxation, an in depth look at early experiments show promising results. Taxation on sugary beverages is where the government has the most solid evidence of an effect. The main goal of the government is to reduce consumption, especially in lower income families who are more likely to have untreated diseases related to excessive consumption of unhealthy foods. Another thing the government can do to push America towards a better future is to reduce the prices of healthier foods. Healthier foods are known for being more expensive and unhealthy foods are always a lot cheaper. According to the article “The New War on Obesity” the author states that “...most [Americans] say they would eat more healthy foods if it cost less”(23). Overall it is up to those who have a voice to push their government into adding more levies to unhealthy foods but, those who have the most power in raising healthy children and young adults are
Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are good for you and what they do to help the body function.
People is always asking: “Why is important to have a balanced diet? Why is necessary to have a balanced diet on a daily basis? And why do professionals tend to recommend a balanced diet?” The human being has essential needs to its existence: breathing, feeding, and keeping the body in constant movement. The majority of the people are aware of this, but they do not have a balance among these things and even more important they do not eat the adequate food to keep their body healthy. Food is one of the most important factors because it gives the energy the body needs daily. In other words, few words food is the fuel that provides glucose, which is carried to each cell of the body through the bloodstream. This process is extremely important and this is influenced by the type of food that each person consumes. A balanced diet is important for human beings, and makes reference to a good nutrition with regard to the food they eat; which contains macro nutrients that are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; these provide energy and basic materials that the body uses to grow and stay healthy.
It is true that food is a basic need for everyone and . Moreover, if population still growing at the same rates, there will be more than nine billions of people until the end of the century and the food production will need to increase in three billion mouths to feed all these people (Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 2013). Knowing that 30% to 50% of all food produced is wasted, to save or to minimize it is the first stage to combat hunger. Food waste is also a wastage of many other resources, such as water, energy and land, which need to be protected. However, food production is not a simple process and it follows a large number of steps that need to be developed and improved in order to achieve a greater use of all food produced.
