Equal Playing Time A high school student athlete; she gives up her social life and after school time for playing, practicing, and perfecting the sport she loves in hopes of making it to college, or an even higher level of competition. She has chased this dream for all of her life, going to camps, spending her free time sharpening her craft, becoming the athlete she visions; only to get put on the bench and replaced with someone who barely made the team and shows up to practice 2 times a week because the coach is required to give students the same amount of playing time. People earn these things by their performance.”.” In the same fashion that not all actors can be the star role in a play or movie or gets to be the lead singer in a band, not everyone gets to be the starting forward or pitcher. Some players are not fit to play some positions just based on natural abilities, and if the coach gives the same amount of time on the field or court for these positions, the game’s competitiveness, moral, and enjoyment is destroyed. Finally, Dr. Alan Goldberg, who travels across the nation to help coaches learn and teach young athletes, describes, “The really maddening, discouraging and frustrating thing for kids and their parents is watching the coach's favorites put in minimal or inconsistent effort into practice, perform poorly in games and still get more playing time from the coach”..” If all of the players on the team gets the same amount of playing time, it will be discouraging to the more motivated and harder working athletes, as they feel like their work is worthless. If everyone gets the same amount of time in games, there would be no reason for players to work hard, they are guaranteed to play. Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
Those who play popular and highly competitive college sports are treated unfairly. Imagine a business that brings in $60 million each year ,and the people fueling that industry receive none of the revenue(Wieberg). These same people work 40 hours in their sport every week, these “people” are college athletes. The NCAA, the governing body for major college sports, is the industry doing this to college athletes(Edelman). This is an issue of exploitation and control by large institutions over primarily poor people, the NCAA is guiding them in directions to make money for everybody while doing everything possible to keep the players out of the money. College Athletes deserve profit because they bring in large revenue into their program, the NCAA, and they invest tons of time into their sport.

Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been for a long time. Due to the increasing ratings of college athletics, this figure will continue to rise. It’s simple: bigger, faster, stronger athletes will generate more money. College Universities generate so much revenue during the year that it is only fair to the players that they get a cut. When watching pro sports, you will notice at the end of games that athletes from the losing team do not appear to be as disappointed in losing as college athletes. Sometimes when watching, fans believe that this reason is because pro athletes do not care as much because they still will get paid at the end of the day. This could be an effect on college sports if student athletes are paid. Growing up in America sport is a vital part of everyday life. From childhood to adulthood some aspect of sport pertains to virtually everyone. As a child one is looking to find a hobby so they play sports. As a parent fathers look forward to coaching their child’s little league team. And as tens and young adults sports are an opportunity to become a “somebody” and do something amazing. The general perception in high school and college is that athletes have it all. If you’re good at sports then you don’t have to worry about schoolwork or popularity and essentially you have but not a care in the world; you are invincible. Although it is great to see some succeed and become professional athletes many others do not have the same fate. The fate of these athletes, which happens to be the majority, is what drives my opinion on college sport.
A very controversial issue in college athletics today is whether student athlete's academic goals or athletic events should be placed in higher importance. In our society today, many people people tend to think of highly renowned college athletes as athletes that dedicate all their time to the sport that they play. What many people tend to forget is that these college athletes have as large a responsibility in the classroom as they do playing football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, track and field, or whatever sport it is that they play. These student athletes are required to practice for many hours each week in addition to having to complete hours of homework and research papers that they may have. Some people may think that being a collegiate athlete would be a fun and easy task but however, they are wrong. Regular college students receive enough homework and papers to do. Imagine having to complete all of the homework that all non- student athletes have to complete in addition to the time consuming dedication to a sports team. This is the stressful and challenging life of a collegiate student athlete.
