There is nothing worse than having to follow a dress code. Leaving high school was most exciting because it was the end of having to dress a certain way in order to attend school. The way people dress represents the inner character. Taking away the privileges does not allow a person to express their personality through appearance. Dress code policies were implemented by the U.S. Department of Education due to concerns of violence in schools, believing that it promotes school safety, improve discipline, and enhances the learning environment (Jane & Beth, 2006). A false assumption made upon enrolling at Keiser University, where the dress code demands students attend class in business casual attire. Most absurdly, students who fail to comply with the policy are sent to the dean before the student is sent home, as if this were a high school. If a student arrives to class with intentions to gain knowledge, how is it fair to dismiss a student for wearing a t-shirt instead of a button up shirt? The university is implying that appearance is more important than obtaining an education, if the student has to miss class to be sent home for not complying with the dress code. College students should not have to adhere to a dress code because this is not high school and although the student is aware of the dress code, everyone attending the university are adults that pay to attend class. Therefore, students do not arrive with an intention to impress one another, but instead to gain the knowledge necessary to obtain a degree. Students are willing to learn and produce high quality work when wearing comfortable attire because it promotes confidence in attaining new information. Not to misconstrue the nice gesture of preparing students for working in professional environments, however permitting student to wear comfortable attire enhances learning abilities. Hoodies and sweat pants should especially be permitted to accommodate the nearly below freezing temperature of the classroom. Let’s be honest, students fresh out of high school do not possess business casual attire. As a result, instead of being able to wear a clean t-shirt and pair of jeans already in the closet, students are forced to waste money purchasing uncomfortable professional clothing. Keiser University’s Administration should conjure ideas to implement professionalism in a more comfortable fashion or allow students to dress in simple, modest attire once a week. The objective is not to encourage laziness, but to enhance the idea of allowing students to dress comfortable to solely focus in class. Every year parents, students and teachers argue about the issue of applying school uniform, and if it is going to be put into effect or not. Each year, school dress code is being pushed away. Year after year, to help stop violent behavior and encourage order in schools, dress codes are applied. Does the fact of students having to wear a certain dress code reduce the violent behavior and encourage order in schools? (“The Controversial School Uniforms and School Dress Code Debate”, 2008). Research shows, that dress code policies may increase the chance of a child safety in school by a very low percentage, but that still affects the child in a positive way (“Do uniforms make schools better?”, 2004).
Many think that a stronger dress code will help students focus in school, but the way a student dresses does not determine a student’s willingness to learn or the teacher’s ability to capture the student’s attention. Also, adults argue that high school is a teenager’s job; therefore, they should dress professionally. However, Elizabeth Forward does not have a policy against sweatpants, sweatshirts, or athletic attire, which are much more unprofessional than tank tops or destroyed denim. I think that the dress code policies should be relaxed to a more lenient state given the temperature of the building throughout the school year, the change in long-term trends among teenagers, and the level of hypocrisy illustrated between the relationship of school’s administration and the dress code policy.

A school like Silliman University is an educational environment but still has an adult sense of being. No one should be told what to wear once in an environment of adults or anywhere everyone has a stand out point in their style of clothing. College students are considered adults and should at least have the respect of coming as they are and not a robot that is controlled by a remote. By enforcing these policies, it neither makes students feel physically, mentally, or socially uncomfortable, nor takes away any freedoms that are stated in the First Amendment of the Constitution. Besides eliminating opportunities for the ridicule of less fortunate students based on their attire, helping prevent gang violence and in schools, and generating overall academic excellence and discipline in the educational community, there are numerous other reasons to support the principles of having dress codes or uniform policies established in every public school across the nation.
