When people think of the word dedication, their focus is athletes, but everything that is worth the time and energy, requires a certain amount of dedication. Dedication is what founded this free world. High school or college students, doctors, lawyers, teachers, every occupation in the world requires dedication. When cancer patients are diagnosed and are going through the stages of destroying the cancer, they have to stay dedicated to their selves. Dedication is the commitment of an individual or a group to perform a task. The athlete is usually the first example when thinking about dedication. Unlike a normal student, an athlete requires more focus to make good grades because of the amount of time spent in sports. Not only is the athlete asked to perform well on the competitive field, but also asked to …show more content…
maintain healthy grades. From a personal account, a swimmer has practice twice a day, Monday through Friday and again on Saturday. The swimmer must wake up at 4:00 a.m. in order to be at practice for 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. before attending a 7-hour school day. Following school, the swimmer must go to practice from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. When the swimmer is home, chores and any unfinished schoolwork must be accomplished. Along with these tasks, the swimmer must also keep a healthy diet. The commitment of that swimmer has to be high in order to keep going through this routine every day. The commitment for all athletes is required to be high so that they do not fall behind in school. Unlike the student-athlete, the normal student does not require so much dedication. They must still devote themselves to their schoolwork, but they are not overly consumed because they do not play sports. Doctors, lawyers and surgeons require a great amount of dedication as well. Surgeons might be fighting to save a person’s life for hours without any breaks. In order to get to this point they had to accomplish years of hard work and late night studying to make good grades in school so they could become the professional M.D. that they are. Lawyers may also spend hours trying to save a person’s life. The person may be innocent, but is facing death for a crime that they did not do or did do and is not worthy of the death penalty. In order to help the person, the lawyer may have to spend hours researching or developing evidence. They might spend hours writing statements and questions to present in court. One of the most recognized careers that requires a large amount of dedication is the men and women in the armed forces.
These men and women go through hours of detrimental training so that they can put their lives on the line for freedom. The people that go to special training for special ops or the elite seal team go through a course that would physically and mentally kill normal people. They do this so that when they are called out to war they have the advantage over the enemy. They might be gone for a couple of months or they might be gone for a couple of years away from their family and friends. They can be up for hours in the dark without any supplies and be being shot at from the distance. The commitment of these men and women is outrageous and they do it all for the well-being of American citizens. As my father always says, “Storm the Beach,” this phrase shows the dedication and commitment that the men had during D-Day. These men knew they were going to be shot at when the gates on their boats dropped, but they still knew that in order for freedom to continue for their family and friends back home, they had to go on that beach and give it their
all. Dedication is required for everyone in everyday life. Throughout life, many obstacles interfere and create problems that are difficult and require strength to overcome. For example, cancer, cancer can take anyone by surprise and turn his or her life into a spiraling roller coaster. It is possible to beat cancer, my uncle and aunt both have battled through cancer and are now doing well. Cancer patients have to keep their spirits high and keep their fight strong. In order to stay strong, patients need dedication from friends and family to stay with them every step of the way. They also need their doctors to stay committed to keeping them alive. Dedication is what keeps people alive on a daily bases, from doctors to lawyers and cancer patients to high school students. It is the hours of studying or the hours of practice before the big event. Dedication has brought about the freedom that is around today. Everything requires commitment, without it, the world would not be as great of a place as it is today.
...he skills of a paratrooper they were then asked to go to a war for the first time. These men of this division showed just how powerful they were just after their first appearance in war. Then this division was asked to be a part of one of the most famous mission in the United States Army’s history, D-Day. This division then took on this challenge of D-Day and were very successful in their mission. If the 82nd had not gone into Normandy the night before D-Day then the whole outcome of D-day would, with any doubt, have a different outcome for both sides. The task that this division took was pure bravery and courage. Training as an unexperienced soldier, then fighting in a war, only several months later, for your country just shows how much fearlessness and guts this whole division had, classifying them as the best division to ever be a part of the United States Army.
Put into another form, “[The Marines] pour forth with the poignant power of superb human beings doing what they believe is truly righteous. There is grace and magnetism in the way these clean-cut kids hurl themselves out of planes, surge through forbidding terrain and leap with awesome fortitude over one barricade after another. The ads use sophisticated psychology to lure today 's peace-loving young adults into our "humanitarian" military.” (Kronstadt, 2014). It’s through these images and power attached to words and amazing propaganda that gets youth to dive into the world of war with the Marines. The ad under analysis, tells the recruit they will get to “walk with honor”, “command with resolve” and “take your place among the most elite warriors on earth”. They get to ‘take their place’, saying it as though they already have their place, as if the place is waiting for them. The ad also highlights the that the Marines are the more elite warriors on earth, the word warrior itself is captivating. Warriors are seen as the best of the best when it comes to fighting, adding on to the that the elite warriors, projects a view of the ultimate, best fighters there could ever be – and for a lot of people, that is beyond exciting. The ad is also illuminating the fact that they will ‘command with resolve’, meaning they will become firm and determined as a leader. The Marines will give them the skillset and knowledge to be able to command and hold people’s lives in their hands by training and lead them into battles – even though that word is not touched upon in any advertisement. The “walk with honour” has already been highlighted in this essay, but it is important to note that honour, patriotism, freedom and democracy are all tied together in...
Soldiers fight in the battle field not always because of their will but because of their duty. The soldier's duty to their nation can at times feel similar to being dragged to a battlefield. Many soldiers felt as if they didn’t have a choice in what they were fighting for especially if they were drafted. As a result some of them resented their fighting cause. Bitter feelings such as “We ground our bitter bones for your bread”(Hays p.2) were not uncommon among soldiers. These negative emotions towards their fighting cause make sense especially during World War II when they weren't fighting for their own rights. Because war is dangerous a soldier will feel feelings of dread and hatred towards their cause and therefore possibly hate their duty. Although this is true there is also a positive side, being a part of any branch of the military means you have a certain set of duties you have to fulfil during times of war this can be a bonding responsibility between soldiers. For example, “But Ralph’s chest just swelled with pride as he replied, ‘That's how we Marines do it’”(Bradley p.110). Being a Marine is being a part of a whole system of people who share the same duties. This unity and brotherhood of duty is what makes the armed forces an effective collective unit and even a support system for the soldiers themselves. There are both positive and negative emotions towards duty and depending on hero’s emotions it could impact their
Every American soldier endured rigorous training to become the soldier they are today, but throughout all this training, there are a few things that a soldier can't simply learn. Training and development is treated as preparation for war situations, and much like ordinary grade school, they are tested to see how well each soldier does in each area (Huerta, 2014). Even after all this organizing and teaching, a soldier's mind is still just as human as it was before seeing action in battle. Once a soldier learns to control every situation imaginable, they are sent overseas to put all their training to use; but simulations can only get you so far. At some point, there is a moment when a soldier will step out of his or her body and truly realize how far from home they are, and that the violence of war is just a way of their new daily life. At this point "a soldier is considered dirty" (Phillips, 2014). Although for a soldier this sounds like a step in the right direction in this particular line of work, it's really a step down a dark path, and part of the soldier will never return. Now American soldiers are haunted by the negative psychological effects resulting in the harsh symptoms of PTSD (Posttraumatic stress disorder) as seen in Jarhead's main character Anthony Swofford.
In other words, I know what I signed up for when I wanted to take on a big load even though at times like the day of the AP test I feel somewhat overwhelmed by it all. The author says sports serve as a distraction in an environment in which academics should reign far superior. From my experiences, like the one last May, I have learned that it is up to me to excel at whatever I am attempting to do. I know not to take on more than I can realistically do, but that does not mean that I do so little that I never push myself like the day of the AP test . I have had several friends in high school who have done great balancing the two activities; one of my closest friends is a Division 1 athlete at Clemson University, the biggest stage for a student athlete. My senior year my other friend Wayne was not so great at being accountable for all of his work load. As football season being to start, Wayne’s grades in advanced courses such as Calculus and Chemistry begin to dip. At this point he essentially had two options: Quit football or sign up for less rigorous courses. Taking no action, Wayne suffered the consequences of his own irresponsibility. His options were very limited when it came to attending a college of his choice despite having several football scholarship offers, but it was all his fault. He did not have the character to make himself sit down with no distractions and study. My character makes it
In 2004, a soldier by the name of Michael Monsoor graduated from BUD/S school (A Navy Seal training facility) effortlessly. Almost two years later, he was fighting on a roof in Ramadi, Iraq. While producing cover fire for his SEAL team mates, an enemy insurgent managed to toss a grenade through a window where the SEALs were positioned. The grenade struck Monsoor and rolled in front of him. Without even the slightest hesitation, he threw himself over the explosive and absorbed the blast. Thirty minutes later, Monsoor died because of the explosion. Doing what he did allowed the other SEALs in the room to live (Klaidman 3). Michael Monsoor is a prime example of what it means to be courageous and to have valor in its highest form. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States of America’s highest military honor. When hearing this story, it is safe to say that Americans have an extreme animosity towards the enemy insurgents. This illustration of patriotism is one of the reasons why Americans believe that they are endowed the right to discriminate or assimilate people who may be affiliated with these enemies. One way these emotions can be amplified is through the use of one of America’s favorite pastimes.
Not only have these men and woman risked their lives for our country, but now, return different people and can not comprehend whether or not to continue their lives. Many people believe we win wars, when in actuality, no one does, especially those who serve in the armed forces (Suicide Wall, 11-10-2000).
We all know this world has had many wars, whether it’d be with another country or a civil war. We know since the beginning of time we’ve always struggled to survive to protect our lands. The United States broke away from the Crown in the Revolutionary war, won over southern states from Mexico, recovered from a brutal civil war, and saved the world from collapsing through two world wars. The US had some rough spots with war also, but the men and women who go to battle for us are all brave souls. The first in to the battle from the Revolutionary War to now, have been the Marines. You have heard of the saying “Semper Fidelis.” Well that stands for “always faithful”, another unofficial motto is “first to fight”. The motto of the Marines has been “Semper Fi” for almost three hundred years. They never back down and never give up. Marines will stare death in the face and won’t back down. They will head to battle with their brothers and sisters knowing that someone has their back as they have someone else’s. That sounds like a life style that I’d want to live.
First, they sacrifice everything. The soldiers want freedom and they want to see the citizens of America walk safely on the streets. They leave their friends and family for long periods of time. I had a friend whose dad served a tour for nine straight months, and the only time she got to see him was over the occasional Face Time. Seeing the joy on her face when she saw her dad in person for the first time was overwhelming.
dedication. The many sacrifices made by Ballet dancers and the devotion of an immense amount
We possess the most powerful and dedicated military in the world. We’re deeply indebted to all currently serving as well as to all that have had their lives taken from them in the battle to keep us strong and free—I’ve never met anyone eagerly awaiting the chance to “GIVE” their lives. I certainly know that I wasn't.
In addition to these examples, interscholastic sports also teaches students a lot about dedication. An athlete must be willing to put a lot of time and effort into his sport. Spending this much time on one thing could lead to many things. A student could fall behind in classes. By the time practices and games get over, the athlete is tired and is not likely to stay up another hour or two doing homework. Students need to spend more time on homework and less time in
Some professionals focus on a specific area, while others study a wide range of techniques and ideas, such as imagery, motivation, and attentional focus. Imagery involves visualizing performing a task, such as participating in an athletic event or successfully performing a particular skill. The study of motivation looks at extrinsic and intrinsic motivators. Extrinsic motivators are external rewards, such as social recognition and trophies. Intrinsic motivators are a personal desire to win and a sense of pride that comes from performing a skill. Lastly, attentional focus involves the ability to tune out distractions and focus attention on the task at hand (Cherry, K., 2000).
Intrinsic motivation is very important to me as a student who always makes the motivation intrinsic as my morale as a student and as a employees.
All people contain a thing within them known as skill. Skill the ability to do something well; expertise. Many people claim that that are skilled in a certain activities. I may take time for people to learn, develop a skill, but some people are naturally skilled at certain things. Whether it is sports, cooking, math, reading, etc. People may use the skills they have or learn to decide what they will do in the future. Skill can be the deciding factor in whether you will be very successful or unsuccessful in certain activities in your life.
