What are DNA and Genes DNA is the foundation of our bodily systems. When trying to understand DNA, it’s essential to understand how it is used in the construction of proteins to develop our bodily characteristics. The DNA strands are located in the nucleus of all cells which make up the body. But when delving deeper into the understanding of DNA, an important factor comes into play, known as genes. The importance of genes, are how it is used in the construction of an off springs appearance. Genes are a set of instruction that the body follows when it forms the identity in an offspring. They are constructed from long strands of DNA, and control everything from eye colour, hair colour, to the way the body functions and behaves. Some genes that are found in the body, can be defined as hereditary, meaning that the characteristics of a parent are passed onto the genetic biology of the offspring. This ability, is how children can be perceived as having the same, nose, eyes or ears as the parent. Not only do visual characteristics get passed onto the offspring, but some life-threatening diseases get passed on. One of these diseases is called Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Pathophysiology: Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease of the secretory glands that affects the respiratory and digestive system. It mainly affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses, and reproductive organs. Cystic fibrosis affects the cells that produce sweat, mucus, and digestive fluids. Mucus becomes thick and sticky, causing build-up in the lungs and blocking airways, making it easier for bacteria to develop. This prompts repeated lung infections and can cause severe lung damage after some time.
