Recommended: Importance of knowing about other cultures
Traveling to a new country can be hard at times as the culture can be different from what we are accustomed to. While there can be some similarities between cultures, we cannot always assume what the other culture customs are without really getting to know the culture which can be expressed through cross cultural psychology. In addition, if we assume something based on our own culture we can disrespect the culture and its people. Furthermore, the first time I experience a big cultural difference was when I traveled to a small Pueblo in Tierra Nueva, San Luis Potosi, Mexico for the first time. My parents were both born in Mexico, so at a very young age they taught me how to speak Spanish and traditional Mexican food. Although, I was well accustomed to the language that they speak there, I was not necessarily accustomed to their behaviors practice there which includes; “norms, roles, customs, traditions, habits, practices and fashion” …show more content…
Before arriving to Mexico, I had some idea of what the Pueblo we were visiting would look like, as my parents had always told my sisters and I stories about their lives in Mexico. Being just twelve years old, I was so naïve in believing that regardless of what my parents told me about their lifestyle i Shiraev, E., & Levy, D. (2013). Culture often means an appreciation of the finer things in life; however, culture brings members of a society together. We have a sense of belonging because we share similar beliefs, values, and attitudes about what’s right and wrong. As a result, culture changes as people adapt to their surroundings. According to Bishop Donald, “let it begin with me and my children and grandchildren” (211). Among other things, culture influences what you eat; how you were raised and will raise your own children? If, when, and whom you will marry; how you make and spend money. Truth is culture is adaptive and always changing over time because

Mexican culture is influenced by their familial ties, gender, religion, location and social class, among other factors. Today life in the cities of Mexico has become similar to that in neighboring United States and Europe, with provincial people conserving traditions more so than the Mexican living in the city. In the United States Mexican includes any person of Puerto
In conclusion, this book gave me a whole new view on life and how we can interact better with different people. The book emphasized that culture is key to understanding people. Sometimes it is hard to connect with others because they are indicated as different but in due time we can adjust. Every culture has their own traditions when it comes to what they eat, what to wear, dating, various ceremonies, holidays and more. Reading this book helped me become more accepting of who I am and where I come from.
Lets start by understanding that cultures are a melting pot of people’s beliefs, language, behaviors, values, material objects, and norms. Norms are written and non-written “expectations of behavior” that govern a certain location, place, or culture (26). These norms also vary from culture to culture meaning what is a norm in the U.S may not be a norm in India. For example, a norm in America would be tipping a waiter after a meal. Another would be acknowledging someone as you walk past him or her, typically done at work or in a public place. In all, norms are folkways, mores, taboos, and written laws that are an established standard of one’s behavior.
My family’s Mexican traditions and life experiences played a great role in shaping my individual beliefs and values. I learned to embrace important values, roles, and norms from the Mexican culture. However, the experiences I have encountered throughout my life have influenced my interactions with others, life’s point of view, and the development of having my own sense of reasoning that differs from my family beliefs and values.
...onfident in your communication skills with that culture. If you are unsure of how to act around a different culture you are bound to feel nervous and unsure of yourself. If you are nervous this will also tend to make the other person nervous. In result, you will not be able to effectively communicate with each other. Remember, the more you know about the other person's culture the less uncertainty you will have and the more comfortable you will be with each other.

Some subtle way it affects us is simple manners and traditions. It is polite to open the door for someone and to eat with your mouth closed. Culture is different all around the world and why you may feel a little strange in another country. They are brought up differently and look at things from a different perspective. I think that is a very useful skill to have is to be able to see things from a different perspective. Not all cultures are the same and some things may seem weird to you but may be completely normal to someone else. It goes back to my statement of how we tend to want to be around people that are like us and if we aren’t we feel out of place. But who determines our morals and beliefs? I think your family have a lot to deal with
