Creativity and Human Relations
Creativity in the workplace is a crucial element in the success of an organization. I chose this topic to explore more in depth because of its importance in our business world today. Lamberton and Minor (2014) define creativity as the ability to create ideas, or solutions to problems, that are unique, appropriate, and valuable (p. 234). A high level of employee creativity can be linked to a more productive and lucrative business.

During the 1920’s Graham Wallas defined four steps in the creative process. Step one is perception and preparation (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). This step refers to how each member of the creative team perceives the problem. It is important to have each member’s perception be congruent to avoid difficulty during the creative process. This is relatable to problem solving in my department. All of the nurses working in my department have trained and worked at other facilities that have different workflows. When we come together to discuss an issue, we all have a different perception based on past employment. The difference in perception slows down the creative process. Step two is incubation (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). This step is having an idea that has not fully evolved. There may be extensive research or experimentation that must be completed first in order to reach the final solution. Step three is inspiration (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). This step is that light bulb moment when everything studied or learned comes together. This can be the exciting part of the process, when a final concept has been created and the work that lay ahead becomes interesting. Finally, step four is verification (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). You have to be open to new ideas. If you are not open to new ideas or solutions, then problems will remain the same. We can also view problems or issues as opportunities. In life, we are confronted with obstacles that we may feel we cannot overcome. Then later, looking back realizing that the obstacle was actually a positive change. We can also increase our creativity by spending time with creative people. I have found that the most creative people at work are the ones that are the most positive. In their article, “The Creativity Crisis”, authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman explore the urgency of the downfall in the public’s “creativity quotient.” Bronson and Merryman emphasize the necessity for young children to be imaginative. Through an IBM poll, they verify that with the decrease of creativity in our society comes an array of consequences seen in the work field. The authors remind readers of another reason for the importance of creativity; they argue that creative ideas can solve national matters. Hence, Branson and Merryman believe that original ideas are key for a better world. What exactly is creativity? To be creative is to understand and connect the small details of our experiences, both good and bad (creative something). Creativity involves a person using his or her original ideas to create something. Artists such as poets, writers, painters, designers, and more use creativity on a regular basis. They use creativity to come up with new ideas and create original works of art. A poet would use his or her creative abilities to write and produce a poem just like a painter would use creativity to paint a painting.
Creativity and innovation can help organisations get the advantage in the competitive market and adapt to the uncertain external environment. In the early research by Gassman (1467), he illustrated that although diversity in the team result language barriers and cultural differences occur frequently, some benefits can still be found, for example, opening up opportunities. Another experiment in problem solving creativity found that, the team which composed of people with different attitudes and perspectives were much better than the team which composed of people with similar attitudes (Triandis). Although diversity in team members has shown some advantages for creativity and innovation, there is still some research and experiment that demonstrated that there are no relationships between team member diversity and team performance or the diversity in team members have negative impact on creativity and innovation. Over the course of this class I have learned how important it is to be creative and innovative in the way that businesses are conducted within the organizations. The ability to innovate is the “secret sauce” of business success (Dyer, et al., 2009). However, creativity and innovation cannot take place if the leaders are not willing to foster a culture of innovation within the organization. Amabile & Khaire (2008) asserted that, it is essential to motivate people to contribute ideas by making it safe to fail. Stress that the goal is to experiment constantly, fail early and often—and learn as much as possible in the process. Convince people that they won’t be punished or humiliated if they speak up or make mistakes (Amabile & Khaire, 2008).
Group decision making has many benefits for the individuals involved and the organization itself. In order for group decision making to be efficient, it is important for a creative environment to exist. “Creativity is the mental and social process used to generate ideas, concepts and associations that lead to the exploration of new ideas (May, 2011, para.3). This allows each employee to explore ideas and feel comfortable to share them without fear of rejection.
Innovation has become a critical element for a business to be successful. More emphasis is placed on creativity as it is the core that drives innovation within a company. For an effective education creativity needs to be present within all aspects of a primary classroom. So what does it mean to be ‘creative’? The 1977 white paper, the open plan for schools, and the 2003 excellence and enjoyment strategy concepts will also be drawn on.
There are many people who believe and consider that creativity is affected by culture, the way that ideas, how concepts are introduced, and developed into a reality. In today’s market, creativity is linked to innovation, which is an appreciated and sought after skill to have in todays changing world. I agree with this statement and declaration with four reasons. The first reason is if we did not let people think of ways to be improve items, then we would not be currently in a place in society with the advancement of technology and new ideas that come out everyday from the people of the world. Secondly, the believed notion that “More Energy is equaled to Better Moods”, which is appropriately true about how creativity is affected by culture. Another reason why creativity is affected by culture is allowing the possibilities and opportunities created by creative minds of our culture. Since we are born we have imagination and as we grow up this imagination may increase or decrease. Creativity strongly relies in our imagination. Depending on different circumstances people learn to express their creativity openly while other people close themselves and believe they do not have creativity. Creativity is a natural talent that every single human has. Creativity can be used to solve a complex problem in a different manner or just to find innovative ways to have fun. Creativity is thinking out of the box. Even though creativity cannot be taught from scratch there should be a class that is specific for creativity.
