“To get the full value of joy must have someone to divide it with.”- Mark Twain. Companionship is a commodity every individual needs in their lives in order to function well. Everyone knows how it feels to be lonely, it’s terrible being isolated, it can harm someone mentally and physically. In Naples Florida, there are 55 plus retirement communities overflowing with lonely elderly people locked up inside. It is not a healthy environment, it has a death row like vibe to it. Adults above the age of 55 are about 40% of the population of Naples according to the 2015 census. According to an article about 7 Americans, 65 and over suffer from depression due to isolation. Grey Matters is an outreach program built to lend a helping hand to those who are deserted, while also providing the volunteer caregivers with knowledge and volunteer hours. Nobody should be left out in the dark, we need to end this plague with the elderly by providing companionship in retirement homes and in households with single elderly people living alone. Creating Grey Matters will terminate the loneliness among the elderly and provide an opportunity for those who help the elderly as well.
Providing companionship is the top priority here 20% of the elderly population here in America suffers from depression. Now add in those who have lost loved ones, or whose relatives live out of state. Those poor souls are the ones stranded in retirement homes with no possible way to leave the building. The best possible way of any of them communicating with anyone outside of the retirement home are caring volunteers. ...lorida like Naples, to just sit around until they pass away. Even the lucky who have loving families end up like this too, due to their children living out of state with responsibilities. All life is precious nobody should be left alone without a friend. Elderly is society’s most experienced group people with the inside knowledge of every life problem that will happen in our lives that they can pass on to the future leaders, also this program can help widowers fill the void of losing their loved ones. Grey Matters is going to produce a more tight knit bond between the elderly and the younger generation than ever before. The elderly have been left out in the cold for too long the time to act is now particularly when those age 65 and older have the highest rate of suicide” (Sackeim, Harold and Roose, Steven 157.)Nobody should be forgotten about because Grey does matter.
This book shows the importance of tending to our aging population, particularly those who live alone, like Joseph
The book To Kill A Mockingbird is set in the Great Depression. In this time of economic loss, racism is present in the county of Maycomb, Alabama. In this time of distress the presence of Brotherly love is important. In this troubled town there are many examples of brotherly love. The ones that stand out to me are: The relationship that Boo has with the children, Atticus and Tom Robinson, and the way that Calpurnia treats the Finch's.
“Love is like the sea. It's a moving thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from the shore it meets, and it's different with every shore.” The main character in Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Crawford, possesses a seemingly unquenchable thirst for affection, and does not rest until she finds the man who is able to offer her the love she desires and believes to deserve. Janie defines love as a fluid force that is different with every man, and transforms with changing circumstances. Janie does not care to be wealthy, or to have high social standing; she wishes to be submerged in a sea of tenderness and to swim through waters of passion, and to be caressed by captivating waves of lust. Her idealistic conception of love and the corresponding desire for it developed from her sixteen-year-old obsession with a bee pollinating a pear blossom in the back yard of her grandmother’s house.
In the article “The Mesmerizer,” by Mark Twain in his autobiography, Twain tells us a story when he was a teenager. In 1850, there was an exciting event taking place in the village Hannibal. A mesmerizer named Simmons came to town to advertise his show. Simmons has a subject in his show named Hicks. Fifteen year old Twain participates in this show that Simmons promised marvels to his audience, the townspeople. Twain usurps Hicks’s place stealing the spotlight with a lie. Although Twain became the show, the temporary fame that Twain receives is lost years later and continues to bite him back even after many years. Just as Twain is to blame for being carried away with his own fame that was built on a lie, those who were at the show are to blame for helping Twain. Everyone is to blame.
Universal Brotherhood is an entity that connects us all in a way we can never explain. Throughout “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” Huck experiences the values of Brotherhood through his relationship with Jim. Brotherhood played a major role in the novel and had a great impact on Hucks life. Through his relationship with Jim, he learns that society is not always good and caring, it is corrupt in several ways. He chooses to save Jim out of slavery, something that was illegal during the time. Huck did not care that he went against society to help Jim find freedom because in his heart he felt that it was morally right. Brotherhood plays a big role in the way we interact with each other, it is something inscribed into everybodies DNA. While Universal Brotherhood can be positive, it can also be negative and corrupted from the inside.
Mississippi Twain tells us of a man with a dream. As imperfection has it this
It is difficult at best to think positively when older people are viewed as “incompetent, boring, inactive, dependent, unproductive, weak, unhealthy, passive, ugly, dull, and sad” (Gething, 1999, p. 2). Essentially, a stereotype as such asphyxiates the wind from your sail early in one’s journey into old age. Then again, if the finish line is one of oppression, marginalization, and disempowerment, it’s a race best lost (Ranzijn, 2002). The most poignant negative affiliated with aging unquestionably centers on the end of life concerns. Although, our hope is for a peaceful demise there exists a chance of tremendous pain and suffering. The latter remains my biggest fear, which in and of itself sheds a negative light on aging. Subsequently, I turned to the article, Positive Psychology and Productive Aging in hopes it would provide
I ambitiously decided that I would brighten the lives of the elderly by volunteering at a rest home, but discovered that the elderly were being neglected, shoved aside and forgotten. As I stepped into the home a pungent odor penetrated my nostrils, causing an instantaneous gagging reflex. The place was abounded with neglected and subdued inhabitants, yearning for attention. Anybody that passed them caused a sudden outburst of ranting. The negligence and disregard the home displayed appalled me, but helped me to realize that I wanted to make a difference and change the condition people live in.
The stereotype of depressed lonely old people is a pervasive one, but it is not supported by the facts. Throughout my interview I noticed that, despite health issues, Ms. Nelson

Three different Western marriage customs have influenced the characters in the story "Marriage is a Private Affair" by Chinua Achebe. It is about a Nnaemeke and Nene. Nnaemeke was an Igbo but Nene was from a different part of the country. They fell in love and Nnameke proposed. Then Nnaemeke got a letter from his father telling him about an arranged marriage that is being planned. Very disappointed, Nnaemeke comes home and tells his father that he will not get married to anybody, except Nene. Nnaemeke was kicked out from his father's house and wasn’t wanted there anymore. Happily married, Nnaemeke and Nene, had two sons. They wanted to see their grandpa and wouldn’t stop asking to visit him. When Nnaemeke's father read the letter about his grandsons he couldn’t stop himself from thinking about them. At last he was beginning to open his heart for his son, daughter-in-law, and his grandsons. The first custom was that the parents arranged marriages for their children. Nnaemeka's father had arranged a wedding for him with a girl from his culture. The second custom was that love was not part of the marriages. All that mattered was that she had to be a good Christian and had the potential to become a good wife. The third custom is that the woman had to be raised from the same culture. Women from other cultures were not welcomed in Igbo culture and families. These three customs had a huge affect on Nene's and Nnaemeka's lives.
In many novels, the society created by the author is surrounded by wealth and corruption. Numerous amount of times these settings are produced based on the life in which the author lives. Charles Dickens is no different. In the midst of most of his novels, Dickens exposes the deception of Victorian England and the strict society that holds everything together. In Dickens' novel Our Mutual Friend, a satire is created where the basis of the novel is the mockery against money and morals. Throughout this novel, multiple symbols and depictions of the characters display the corruption of the mind that surrounds social classes in Victorian England.
Mark Twain illustrates the theme of friendship through the characters Huck and Jim. Their friendship was created when Huck and Jim were put together due to common circumstances that take place throughout the novel. The friendship that was formed was constantly undergoing changes. Towards the end of the book the relationship that once existed as a simple friendship grew in to a father and son relationship. Huck and Jim were tools that Twain used to show just how the theme of friendship developed.
People in their seventies and beyond have lived through many life experiences younger adults such as myself, could only imagine. While working closely with my partner, I believe I will strengthen my ability to communicate to others. I want to be able to openly express my thoughts on any given situation. Elderly people have so much wisdom and I am curious to view the world of the new generation through the lens of older people. This experience will gradually allow me to be more comfortable with story-telling about myself and how I am truly feeling without feeling the need to shield my emotions. In the same token, my partner may have some great life lesson to share or similar experiences when they were younger. Senior citizens are the people
In the short story “The Other Two” written by Edith Wharton, she challenges marriage by bringing up feminism. Wharton introduces Mr. Waythorn as a persona with deep acceptance towards his wife Alice who breaks the society’s view of women staying in one marriage even though society doesn’t take divorces very lightly. Wharton voiced the difficulties Mr. Waythorn goes through with his wife Alice, who previously had two other marriages before him, causing him to fear divorce. Mr. Waythorn slowly discovers Alice’s past as he reunites with Alice’s ex-husbands which made him insecure when he realizes that her ex-husbands are good men. Truthfully, marriage is about commitment and the fear that happens during marriage is finding someone better.
