The Importance Of Community Service

Introduction
Community service is any work done for free for the benefit of a community or its institutions. It is not the same as volunteering as sometimes it is done unwillingly. There are many reasons as to why people do community service. Some people, like those in the military, do it because it is required of them by the government as part of the citizenship requirement. Others do it because it is court mandated as part of punishment for a criminal offence. Others do it because the school curriculum requires it in order for one to graduate; this is mostly popular in universities. Corporations also do it as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility and finally there are those who do it due to their desire to help and change the society.
Community service tends to change ones perspective on the society. The experience is humbling as your mind is opened to things that are often taken for granted such as basic amenities, food, water, shelter and education.
It’s not the first time I am doing community service as I have done several voluntary community service projects with the club I enrolled in school, but at the moment I fall under the category of doing community service in order to fulfill my requirements to graduate. Students can either choose to do a project for a given community or hands on experience at a certain institution. A project requires one to identify the immediate need of a community and come up with a way to help it and it usually involves fundraising. The hands-on work requires identifying ways to help the institution through your labor.
I got the opportunity to do my community service at Bishop Opera Luigi Locati Children’s Home in Zimmerman, Nairobi.

• Security
The school is not properly fenced and this may lead to some of the autistic children getting out of the school compound and getting into danger because most of them are also deaf.
• Lack of enough funds to the school
The school can’t afford to give the children any bread or tea at ten o’clock. The children are forced to survive with the porridge they drank in the morning before school started up to lunch time when the food is ready.
Opportunities
• Internet
The fact that the school has its own website puts them a step ahead in the right direction. Through the internet donors will be able to familiarize themselves with the school and find out how they can make an impact to the school.
